After reading it and growing up next to a diehard OU alum I called up the number and inquired about a tour. They were very helpful on short notice. When my Dad and I got there we were greeted and they made us feel welcomed. We were mistakenly put in the tour for prospective students and taken all over campus. The student tour guide knew her stuff and took us everywhere. In and out of class rooms, dorms, offices, reading rooms and more. She answered our questions when we had them and even let our group take a break here and there. The tour was a blast! When we got back to the visitors center after the tour was over the staff was nice and helped my Dad and I find our way back to the student union for lunch and where to buy t shirts and hats. If you have 3 hours or so and want to go on a neat walking tour filled with history, culture and people facebooking on their cellphone while riding a bike through campus then you should take the OU tour.

He provided me with information about the trails, the…read morecolor coded flags on the trees, points of interest to watch for, such as the tree that grows sides ways, sandwiched between large boulders. He was super helpful! I hiked The Falls Trail, which is 3.5 miles and rated difficult, and the rating is absolutely accurate. The trails are well marked and easy to follow. All of them begin to the left of the visitor center as you walk toward the Fire Road. To reach The Falls Trail, you walk about a quarter mile on the Fire Road, and the trail is the second access point on the left. It's clearly marked with signage, so you won't miss it. Near the butterfly garden, where the trails split to take The Falls Trail or the Wilson Trail, there's a water jug with cold water available, which is a thoughtful touch. The first half of The Falls trail is fairly easy, mostly flat, and a nice warmup. Eventually the terrain shifts to rocky sections and larger boulders. You're not rock scrambling, but there are a few places where the step up or down is high enough to make you slow down and choose your footing. The second half is where the difficulty really sets in. It's mostly incline, and mile markers 118 and 119 were the toughest for me because of the steep grade. It took me three and a half hours to complete the trail, longer than I expected. I'm out of shape and still adjusting to Oklahoma humidity, so I needed several breaks on the return route. The entire trail is under a thick canopy, which keeps you shaded but also blocks most of the breeze. It's a blessing and a challenge at the same time. One thing I really appreciated was the park's safety protocols. Color‑coded flags on the trees help keep you on the correct trail, and the mile markers include location numbers. If you ever have an emergency, you can relay that number so rescuers can find you quickly. No one expects to need help, but it's reassuring to know the system is in place. There are also a couple of spots marked with blue flags that indicate the quickest way out to the Fire Road, which is helpful if you need to exit the trail fast. The visitor center is a great place to cool down after a long hike. There are misters out front, and I stood under them when I finished because I was overheated and exhausted. They felt amazing. There are also rocking chairs outside, and inside you'll find clean bathrooms and a small selection of souvenirs including magnets, pins, keychains, beanies, and T‑shirts. I picked up a sticker and a pin. They really thought of everything to make your visit a good one. From having wood hiking poles you can borrow inside the Visitor Center, to the misters and rocking chairs, the water jug, the color coded flags. Highly recommend visiting Keystone Ancient Forest.

There's just so many things to say that are wonderful about this gem. We were told at the visitor…read morecenter that it is the second largest visited refuge in North America. The bison are truly breathtaking. If you get the chance to see them sit and watch for a while. We were able to do some hiking and picnic. There's also camping and fishing and boating, but we didn't do any of that on this trip. We picked up lots of pamphlets at the visitor center, so we can come back again and try again. They have lots of help at the visitor center and are glad to answer questions. They also have a great little gift shop if you want to pick up a treasure or a Momento for your visit. We took the time to take the scenic drive up to the top of Mount Scott walked around, took lots of photos. We met people from all over the world up there. It was pretty amazing. I can't wait to go back and do some more hiking. We did stop on the side of the road to look at the Longhorn cattle. There are some of the original stock from back on the turn-of-the-century or release from the bloodline it's pretty neat all these things that you can do while you're here visiting I highly recommend it. It's a great adventure not just for families but just solo if you wanna get out and explore.

To my surprise, this turned into an unexpected 5-star experience. I was completely wrong in my assumptions. From start to finish, the process was smooth and painless. Yes, I waited maybe 8-10 minutes--but honestly, who's counting? I was too busy browsing the MIO products, which made the wait go by quickly. The gentleman who helped me (I didn't catch his name--he had long hair, so I hope that helps identify him) was outstanding. Friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful. He even offered to install the decal for me, but unfortunately, I wasn't driving the vehicle it was going on. Still, the offer alone deserves recognition. I stepped outside afterward to snap a few photos, and I may just come back again to spend some time exploring travel resources and ideas for getting around Oklahoma. All in all, a surprisingly pleasant experience and proof that not all tag or toll office visits have to be painful. Well done!
