I was invited to come to 2 days of classes to decide which style would suit me. The building isn't in the greatest neighborhood and the school was ok. The impressive thing about the school was the quantity and diversity of weapons around the school. Sifu Cottrell, the owner and teacher at the school greeted me warmly. Classes were in session and Sifu took the time to give me a tour. He Started with his lineage, who his teachers were and who his teacher's teachers were. In Sifu's lineage, Ip man had taught his teacher! We sat for a while, while he educated me on Wing Chun and how Bruce Lee was the most famous practitioner. I came the next day to see Praying Mantis style, which even for a lay person was vastly different than Wing Chun. I had never seen anything quite like it, especially after watching so many Kung Fu movies. Sifu and I agreed Mantis would suit me best and it has. The instructors are top of the line. So patient, will explain and demonstrate techniques 100 million ways until you get it. I always felt supported and inspired to learn from the community of students. I never heard anyone speak an ill word or treat anyone poorly. The community of students welcomed me and I felt safe to both succeed and feel failure. Truly, I could go on and on, but there really is no greater place to learn Kung Fu and to embrace your potential.

Competition is encouraged but not required, and there are many very successful competitors here in different age ranges, weight classes, and belt levels. Focusing on the kid's side for this review: Started about 3 years ago with my 4 year old daughter. We came for a trial class and enjoyed it, so decided to keep training. Another big factor was the female ownership and strong female membership. I wanted my daughter to have those examples to look up to. We have never done any martial arts or wrestling before, so I wasn't sure how either of us would fair. My daughter loves her coaches and they really do a great job of keeping things fun yet disciplined and engaging. They all genuinely care about their students. They make sure everyone is safe and working together in a controlled way. Coach Jen and Coach Kat started her off with Wee Warriors and the basic skills. She has been able to move up and promote into the more advanced classes with Coach Kari and Coach Eli. She also loves helping with the younger kids whenever she can with Coach (and owner) Karen, Coach Eli, or Coach Jen. It's nice that all of the coaches generally work together and help eachother, and there are many other coaches that I am sure I am neglecting to mention who have contributed to my daughter's progress. The lessons are consistent no matter who is leading the class, and generally build on the previous lessons or review skills already taught. Plenty of private and small group lessons available as well for extra training if desired. The more my daughter participates and engages with her coaches, friends, training partners, and other competitors, the more she enjoys being at Genesis Jiu Jitsu.
