Even from a spectators prospective I feel I have learned alot even though I have never participated in classes. Instructor Mr. Tyler is a fourth degree black belt with multiple state championships under his belt. Mr. Tyler pairs his vast knowledge of martial arts with a tasteful sense of humor to keep students engaged and having fun. Instructor Mrs. Wood-Tyler is a sixth degree black belt with multiple state championships under her belt. Mrs. Wood-Tyler's cheerful, firm and caring personality gives Mrs. Wood-Tyler a natural ability to teach and teach well. The students at TSK not only learn karate but also useful and practical skills for everyday life like stranger danger, self defense and respect for others. I can't recommend them enough.

The kids learn discipline and karate skills in a fun environment. One of the things that I really like is their method for advancement. Since it takes a while to move up belts, the kids can earn stripes in between belts in order to keep them motivated. The only "negatives" would be that some classes are taught by younger black belt students and they sometimes have trouble keeping the littles in line. But the adult instructor is usually nearby to assist when needed. Definitely give them a try if you're looking for a safe (and indoor) way to keep your kiddos active.

You mostly just do cardio excercise with a lower portion consisting of learning how to kick and throw a punch. I would of like there to be more of actual learning how to fight, rather than just doing cardio. I could do cardio at home for free, but if you want to learn how to actually fight, I would not recommend this place. Plus the class is only 30 minutes long.

I had already stripe tested everything else. I put in dozens of hours volunteering. I was on payroll for a while as well, as an asisstant instructor in the sparring program. I *loved* sparring, and I *loved* teaching it. My constant gushing about Kenpo led several folks to either sign themselves or their children up. Last year I was diangosed with cancer and my doctors told me I needed to take a break. The owner told me to take care of myself and not to worry, they would be there for me when I was ready. Fast forward 9 months. My cancer was in remission and I was ready to return. When I reached out to the owner he told me he was excited to have me back, and told me I could come back at the "new member rate". I'll save you from a ton of math here, but the short of it is my kids and I attended for $391. This included unlimited classes, sparring, sticks, etc. The new rate would be $1200 a month for each of us to attend one class per week. When I expressed that this was out of my budget, he told me I could just end my daughter, and I could sit in the stands and "watch". At this point I reminded him that he had promised to hold my rate, and sent him screen shots of the conversation. I wasn't angry. I just wanted him to realize I wasn't asking for special treatment here. After 7 years of attending that school, when I was told I could return at that rate, I was shocked when he blew me off. At this point he basically just stopped responding to me. When i made a facebook post and tagged the the studio and explained what happened, he simply blocked me. His way of dealing with his lies is to block me and ignore me. After 7 years of considering that studio to be a part of my family. He is unhinged these days. He literally just posted about how one of the schools he workls with "doesn't understand him" because he told them he was going to put there account on hold due to low membership. They couldn't believe he would act this way after working with him for ovger 15 years, so they asked him to leave. All he cares about is money these days. Please stay away. This is not a place where you learn martial arts. This is a palce where you buy a belt, if you can afford it.

My son had lost interest in baseball and we were looking for something to keep him exercising. I was a little concerned when I drove to the gym. It is not in the best of neighborhoods,and the strip mall it was in was more than a little run-down. Meeting one of the black-belt instructors - Bryan Higgins - put my mind at ease, however. GPKA has been operating for more than thirty years in Grand Prairie at this same location. Attend a belt test there and you will see a full panel of black belts that reads like a who's who of Texas Karate. Two years later, and I can't think of life without GPKA. I joined shortly after my son did and am now a brown belt there. The instructors are top notch, and the gym is owned by a legend of Texas Karate - Dr. Brax Boyd - a man who counts Chuck Norris as a long-time friend and professional associate. Classes are for everyone - boys, girls, young, old, disabled - you'll see them all. Its great exercise, great for coordination and flexibility, great to lose weight, and great fun. And you learn the art of self defense. There is no down side! So if you drive by and think the place looks run down, come in an experience the heart these folks possess. As the author Larry Niven once said, mutts may not win any dog shows, but they usually beat the winners in a fair fight. If you want the prettiest gym, go somewhere else. I studied with Song Choe himself back in the early 70s. My grandson is now studying (a different…read moreacademy) and he was showing me his moves this morning. It really threw me back and I started searching for Song Choe. I was saddened to learn of his passing so early in life. He was a virtuous soul and strict instructor and not only taught the art, but also morals, honor, integrity and God. I'll never forget "toenail inspection" wherein we lined up and Song Choe would walk by and check your toenails. If they were too long, he'd mash your toe with a cane! He would yell "You cut you toenail! You cut somebody!" Well, after i saw the first toe smashed, I made sure mine were perfect LOL! Unfortunately, I had to stop going due to life but my brother continued to achieve his 1st dan. The point is, although I can't speak of the college as it is today, I know that Song Choe's legacy is still very much alive and well. I have deep respect for him and I know his successors do too and are passing on his teachings, not just the art, but leading a clean life as well.
