I grew up in San Francisco and later relocated to Sacramento. In need of a cheongsam for my bonus…read moredaughter's upcoming wedding, my husband and I traveled to San Francisco to visit Dragon Seed. Being half Chinese, I learned Cantonese before English and chose to converse with the owner in Cantonese to refresh my vocabulary. I tried on a purple cheongsam from the rack, which I believed fit well. Mrs. Tam noted it required slight adjustment at the waist, so we returned a week later to try it on and collect it. During our visit, I met another family whose mother had driven from San Jose, and whose daughter, the bride-to-be, had flown from Los Angeles to have a custom gown made at Dragon Seed. Upon trying my dress again, it fit even better than before. Observing the bride-to-be's dress, Mrs. Tam suggested a minor alteration to the shoulders. Her meticulous attention to detail and exquisite selection of gowns were truly impressive. My gown cost under $350, a price comparable to those found online. Having read other reviews, I can only speak to my own excellent experience. I was able to converse with Mrs. Tam in Cantonese for nearly half an hour, during which she shared insights about her business and its challenges. I would wholeheartedly recommend this shop.

Souvenir shop in Chinatown [San Francisco CA]…read more Novelty shirts 3 shirts for $10.99 City Gifts is one of the many souvenir shops in San Francisco's Chinatown. After stopping at many different ones they all start to look alike at what they are offering - this was our last stop before heading to our car to leave. We peeked inside not looking for anything in particular. One of the highlights of this shop is the collection of unique San Francisco- themed items. We saw these novelty shirts and saw that the pricing was very reasonable. The quality was decent too, not thin material. All the other stores sold shirts too but this was the only store that we actually noticed for the price. We grabbed 3 of our sizes and paid for them. The gal let me know of the 3% add'l fee for using a credit card. Still definitely a great deal in Chinatown! Whether a quirky souvenir or stylish memento find them here and bring a piece of San Francisco home with you from City Gifts. Review #3744

I've bought two cheongsam here-one for a bridesmaid dress and another for my own wedding reception…read more My friend also purchased her reception cheongsam here too. Compared to other places in Oakland and SF Chinatown , there were the best selection and quality here (which is still somewhat limited). When I was looking for a cheongsam for my wedding reception I stopped by here maybe a few times over a few months since selection was different each time. The dresses are mostly a few standard sizes the shopkeeper has, with alterations included in the price. It's definitely more reasonable pricing vs doing custom if you're on a budget. Definitely helps too if you speak Chinese or bring someone with you that does. Small selection of men's jackets as well.

3 weeks ago I brought in my custom-made qipao/cheongsam that my mother-in-law got for me when she…read morewas in Hong Kong. It was about 2 inches too big all over. This place came recommended by a co-worker who had her custom made here. Thinking someone with the skills to custom make a qipao would be able to do a good job with alterations, I thought I could trust Mei to correctly and professionally alter my dress. At my first visit, she had me try on the dress and she said she knows what to do. She didn't add any pins to where it needed to be taken in, which made me nervous. I should have followed my instincts and left, but no, i gave her the benefit of the doubt. I was told I can pick it up the following weekend. It was $68 for the alterations, a bit high but I trusted her. I paid up front, which I thought was odd, but again I gave her the benefit of the doubt. The following weekend, I showed up to pick up my dress. She told me to come back in half an hour. I came back and she had me try it on. The waist fit, but the boning of the dress was off centered, which she said she will fix. But the skirt area still needed to be taken in. She then went on in Chinese about how much work that is, and how she charges $200 for a custom qipao so it'll be $10 more, even though it won't cover the cost of the labor, and I'll have to pick it up the following week. I said that was fine and gave her an extra $10. On my 3rd visit, I tried the dress on again, and the hips needed to be let out a little. I noticed that she altered my dress so that I had to put the dress over my head instead of stepping into it. She changed the zipper so that I had to zip it all the way up on the side instead of the flap that goes over your shoulder, which then buttons. How am I supposed to put that dress over my head on the wedding day when my hair is all done?!?! At this point, I just wanted her to be done and get the hell out. She told me to come back in hour. I had lunch, came back in an hour, and it still wasn't ready. In fact, I don't think she did any work when I was at lunch. She saw me come in then went to work. My husband and I stood there for more than an hour, waiting, watching her gossip with other ladies, taking her sweet time. In the end, my dress looked like crap. It still needed to be taken in on the left, she changed the zipper to a cheap one so that you can totally see it, she took the shortcut and made alterations over the lining instead of underneath, AND now I can't even step into the dress to put it on like it was meant to originally. The handiwork was crap also; you could tell she rushed through it and all-in-all didn't give a crap about my dress or the time I wasted. I cried. My beautiful custom made dress was destroyed. Luckily, my mother-in-law took me to Oakland Chinatown and they fixed everything...FOR ONLY $13!!!!!!! NEVER AGAIN! BEWARE!

Q-Pot is a really awesome jewelry and accessories line. It mostly has a food theme so think chocolates, lolipops, and sweets with a cutesy twist. Their rings are adjustable, so good for those with chubbier fingers. Tyuake Tyoke is a shoe line. They have shoes with mirrors on the heel. They run small, I don't think they go beyond a size L. Aqua Doll is a wig line. Listen Flavor has a more casual feel to their clothes. Most of their shirts, jackets, and hoodies are oversized so if you are plus size, you will probably appreciate the sizing. Listen Flavor has a lot of pastel colored pieces so if you like the Fairy Kei Look, this would be a good line. They also have gothic themed items too like cute demon bunnies. The store is also having more events which is a plus if you want to meet others in the Lolita community. You are able to buy tickets after purchasing a certain amount of merchandise. The week before Valentine's Day, they had a novelty fair (gift with purchase). I ended up with a cute pass case, perfect to put my clipper card in. I didn't think it was possible to love this store even more than I did but Harajuku Hearts has really outdone itself. I recommend checking out their Facebook page for news and coordination ideas.

However, I was put off by how expensive everything was. That's too be expensive with this kind of imported clothing, but I wish I could afford it! In a sense, this place makes you feel like you're in a pink adult dollhouse. It's a good find!

Could have been an honest mistake but make sure you check the prices before they check you out. They have a few Bay Area locations but this one is good and has a lot of selection, all things kawaii. Cute shopping bags make for good gift bags to others. Also have a lot of Korean skincare products. Prices are slightly higher I noticed but I wanted to support the small business so I decided to get the Purito moisturizer this time and it's a lovely formula.
