It's gone through many renovations since those days, but it still gives me a creepy, unusual, and chilling feeling when I see it. It's obviously a special place to me, but I don't really like hospitals, and besides, my brother nearly died here twice, once just after birth, complications from Asthma and such. You can blame my parents for that I suppose, they blame each other for it, so why not. It's a very modern hospital that is famous all over England, and perhaps all over Europe. Plus, it has to have a 5 star because I was born there. To give it less tha a 5 would just seem ungrateful. And this is the 1,981st review I've ever written, by the way.

The car park is well signposted, but like most NHS hospitals, you pay on your way out and it costs several pounds. The hospital itself is a maze - there are signposts which seem to lead you in indirect routes, although you usually end up passing the help desk a couple of times to get more directions. It doesn't help that there are several entrances and exits on different floors. The hospital has a fairly nice atmosphere and doesn't seem too clinical. Some corridors have nice pictures on the walls, the cafe is wonderfully cheap (cheap squash, simple but cheap filled rolls) and there are book stalls and charity stands dotted around. It definitely feels like a place that is full of life.

Having only lived in Gloucester for a couple of years I can't speak for the entire hospital as I…read morehave only personally seen a small part of it. I had my baby here in December 2006 and it was a fantastic experience. The midwives were amazing and they did everything in their power to ensure that we stuck to my birth plan. I ended up having a waterbirth in the delivery suite (sadly the birth unit was shut for Christmas!) and it was everything I had dreamed that it would be. The aftercare was excellent and the wards were relaxed and friendly. I've also made three trips to the out of hours doctor, once for myself and once for each of my children. There's often a long wait, but the waiting room as fairly comfortable and there are plenty of toys for the little ones. It's certainly a lot better maintained than some of the hospitals I've been to.

However when went to the eye clinic was informed they closed at noon on Saturday and while I could be admitted, I was looking at a 4-5 hr wait. The staff at reception instead suggested I should return back on Monday before 8:30am, as waiting times then would be less. So according, my brother dropped me off and I got there at 8:20-ish and was given nos 14. Got called an hour later and my information for registration was provided. Then back in line, when was called a second time and described to a nurse what happened. Then back to waiting, but this time in another space. Finally another nurse came out, examined my eye, said she wanted the Doctor to look at it, and back to waiting I went. Finally the Doctor came, said my eye was clearing up nicely and eye pressure was as it should be. I asked if could get a copy of my notes, as them would see a follow up optometrist in Amsterdam and then waited another 30 minutes after which an officious receptionist staff refused my request cause referral letters can only be addressed to a local GP, and I didn't have one! Whew - my experience here was so different (in a bad way) from Bristol Eye Hospital! Longer wait time of around 4 hrs and then they wouldn't make s photocopy of my notes! Not very pleased but at the same time grateful got my eyes checked and everything was fine. Yelp 176/ 2019

These features all make Stamford a superb A&E to end up in. Extremely knowledgable and experienced staff keep waiting times to almost nothing, and have earned the hospital much respect from the local community. If you break your arm anywhere near Stamford, aim to end up here rather than Peterborough District Hospitals (or other local hospitals), where waiting times are likely to be much longer.

The inpatient food isn't bad, especially the puddings, but they only have a two week menu. I'd recommend a jacket potato, and avoid the sandwiches. Everybody here is supportive and will try their best to keep you in the know about what and why is happening. I have never sat there with an alarm bleeping for more than five mins. This is a fantastic achievement by the busy staff who will do everything to keep you comfortable. The first thing to note about this hospital is that it is huge. If you go through the main…read moreentrance, it's like an airport or train station. There's loads of glass and space, it's very bright. There's a Costa Coffee, a WH Smiths and a cafe right by the doors as well as a handy information desk. Outside is also a fruit and veg stall that's great value for money. The hospital is well sign posted, so you can easily find what department you're looking for. Outpatients has colour coded chairs in the waiting areas so you know where to sit. There are also staff that are very friendly and willing to help you if you need it. The hospital is well served by public transport, with buses to Halesowen, Solihull, Birmingham and West Brom as well as being a couple of minutes walk from University station on the cross city line. There is a car park but it's very expensive. There are disabled spaces by the main entrance but there aren't many of them and the road can get very busy with cars and buses. A couple of years ago I broke my ankle (the "most spectacular broken ankle" according to the doctor in A&E) and was taken here. I was seen quickly by the doctors in A&E and x-rays were done fast as was the setting off the bones and the plaster cast. It took about two hours all together (I think, I was still very drunk at the time). I had to spend a week in hospital before surgery. The wards were clean and the nurses were friendly. The surgeon who fixed my ankle explained the procedure and was very helpful. Now there were some issues with my stay. Firstly, the food is awful. I found myself getting my husband to take me down to Costa to buy panini's in the evening. Secondly, I found the doctors who looked at my ankle talked over me. They would come in, have a poke around and then leave without saying a word to me. Thirdly, the date of my surgery kept changing, which is very frustrating when you just want to go home. Fourthly, I was given crutches but not shown how to use them so the first time I tried to take myself to the bathroom I lost my balance and tried to steady myself with my broken ankle. I've been back regularly since being discharged as an outpatient and for physiotherapy. I've been well looked after and received great care from the staff that I've seen.

However, I was pretty impressed with the quality of care that both I and a friend of mine received at the hands of the staff there. First - my friend: he was knocked over by a car in Selly Oak. Despite landing on his head (ouch) he was duly patched up in no time, and, having received immediate care and attention from the staff at Selly Oak, managed to come away with no ongoing injuries other than a slightly broken finger. They were extremely quick to respond, completely sorted him out and were really understanding with both him and us as we all piled down to A & E to see him. I was taken in as I had a bad asthma attack that my inhaler didn't seem to be able to sort out. They immediately shunted me up he queue in terms of seeing a doctor (I think this is policy with asthma) who sorted me out in about 5 mins! He was really attentive and thorough - which can be difficult when you're seeing 10 patients a second in A&E. To compare, I had a similar occurrence in Wolverhampton, and had to wait 3 HOURS before a doctor saw me - and even then he kept drifting in and out. So, well done Selly Oak. It's good to know that the injured of south Birmingham are in safe hands.

Previously for many years prior to the building of the new super hospital this establishment also took care of civilians. In fact both my mother and grandmother were taken here for different illnesses and I have to say that despite my general aversion to hospitals, Selly Oak always provided wonderful care. A further note, hospital food including that in the canteen is usually notoriously bad. However on more than one occasion I have to admit I actually ENJOYED a canteen meal from this hospital. Hospital's are never are a good place to visit but the people of Birmingham should take pride in the achievements of Selly Oak Hospital as it serves those who make tremendous sacrifices in order to protect our country.

A week into stay with my brother, I came downstairs with an upper respiratory viral infection. I…read morewas feverish and coughing so much that had to see a doctor. My brother called his GP to see if I could get an appointment to see her. However she said as I did not have local registration, she couldn't see me, and instead referred me on to the local hospitals Urgent Care Center and so off we went here. They have excellent signage and so we found ourselves in the hospital parking lot (make sure u get a parking ticket!) and then it was easy to find the Center, once we walked towards the buildings and saw a big map (photo posted on Yelp too!) The urgent care center staff took my details down and then I waited around 20-30 mins, a nurse (along with a student- nurse) saw me, took down my temperature and then sent me out in the waiting room, where I waited another 30 mins and then was taken into the ED area, where another nurse said as I had a viral infection, so no prescription but gave me two paracetamol and then gave me a note for work and that was it. All told it took like 2 (maybe 2h30?) so I can totally sympathize with all the UK folks who complain about waiting times, as experienced it for myself! But both nurses who saw me were really nice and answered all my questions, so very impressed by the staff. Yelp 18/ 2019

Being a weekend, I quite naturally acquired an abscess which needed antibiotics. the 'out of hours Shrop doc' could not help and neither, inevitably, could the 111 service, offering card read advice as a substitute for medical help. Eventually, in desperation and knowing it could not help dental patients, I went to the Ludlow community hospital minor injuries unit, and fortunately met with nurse 'Nicky'. In so much pain I did not acquire her nursing title, but her evident concern and tenacity eventually secured me a prescription for medication. Her clear, straight to the point, dedication is a credit to this hospital and represents what a community hospital SHOULD be all about. THE CONCERNS OF LOCAL PEOPLE'S HEALTH. Nurse Nicky is clearly a great advertisement for the hospital. A wonderful nurse and profoundly professional about her work. Long live community hospitals!!!
