The most delicious meal I've had in Memphis. I recommend studying the menu before you come because you'll be asked to order as you enter. You'll pay there and then be offered a table and your food will be brought to you. Your check includes a 15% service charge of course you can tip additionally with cash later if you wish. I've never heard of eating neckbones so of course that's what I ordered. The pork neckbones had been well braised and were super delicious. Truly an ultimate pork experience. You definitely have to pick them up and chew all over. But there's lots of meat. Some of it you can get to with a fork, and some of it can be broken apart for easier access to the meat, but it is not an elegant meal! I found the vinegar at the table really enhanced the flavor. My sides were black-eyed peas and turnip greens, and the greens were spectacular. The corn muffin was very good. The sweet tea was very sweet, but not nearly as sweet as the peach cobbler. The cobbler was delicious with lots of nutmeg, but people really have a sweet tooth in Memphis. Went here at the recommendation of two Lyft drivers. Easy walk 0.6 miles from Stax Music, safe. Courtney (see photo)greeted us and took our orders. He chatted with us as we waited at our table for our orders. He served our orders and bused our plates too. He does everything and is very personable providing welcoming hospitality. And he's only worked there for a mere 5 weeks. I asked him who the owner is and he directed me to Jerry and Patrice Thompson, two of the nicest folks you'll ever meet. Jerry has a big welcoming personality and a great sense of humor. Fried catfish fillets were excellent! Crust was just right and the fillets were moist. I ate everything in my plate. Peach cobbler was warmed up, we opted to not have it w ice cream, and it is the best in Memphis! Such a long and storied history for this restaurant. Add the gravy, ask for extra on the TD - yes I know the shortcut for the meal! I also get extra cranberry sauce on the side. Then there's the baked chicken, fall-off-the-bone tender, perfectly seasoned, and honestly, just as good as Aunt Bay Bay used to make (don't tell her I said that). The mac and cheese is creamy, cheesy, golden on top, the kind that is made with the béchamel! It instantly takes you back to family dinners. And it's not just the food that keeps me coming back. I finally got a chance to visit this Iconic Restaurant. I treated myself to lunch and thank goodness it wasn't too crowded. It felt like I was stepping into a time capsule so to speak. You could feel the significance of this place all around you. I was very warmly welcomed and questions answered about the menu. I decided to order chicken wings, Mac and cheese, dressing and yams. As I wait for my food I noticed a few tourists enjoying themselves and swapping stories about the civil rights movement. I love all of the pictures and memorabilia inside to remind you of what took place. This place not only fed the people but it fueled the movement in many ways. The Four Way was the first stop on our annual Juneteenth trip, and as soon as I walked in, it felt like I had stepped into an auntie's house after she'd just cooked Sunday dinner. No frills, but plenty of flavor and fixings! The menu is huge, and so is the seating. We lucked out with timing because right after our party of 12 ordered, a huge lunch rush came in. Clearly, this is a popular spot. I ordered the fried chicken with mac and cheese and cabbage. The mac was super cheesy, just how I like it. The chicken was fried to perfection. Crispy outside, juicy inside. The cabbage could've used a little more seasoning, but it was still solid. The cornbread was the standout. It was fluffy, flavorful, and warm. I washed everything down with an Arnold Palmer that was the perfect balance of sweet tea and lemonade. What really stood out, though, was the hospitality. Even as the place got busier, the staff remained warm and welcoming. One person in our group had a delay with their order, and the team went out of their way to check in and make sure she was taken care of. I loved all the university flags hanging along the stairs and the Memphis and Black history displayed throughout the space. It felt like having lunch in a living museum. Memphis Black Restaurant Week 2024! This time, mom and I tried Four Way...FINALLY! We've been trying to get them during black restaurant week for years, but never seemed to be able to get through to order. They have online ordering now, so we tried again. Online ordering was simple enough, although we didn't realize there'd be a limited menu for this week. It's all good though. I'm glad we ordered to enjoy at home because when I went to pick up the food they were super busy! Now I see why we had trouble getting through in the past. Parking and seating is also pretty limited. Mom ordered the three wing special with green beans and mashed potatoes with gravy. I ordered turkey and dressing with yams and greens. We ordered VIPs to drink and each combo came with a cornbread muffin. I wish we could give 1/2 stars for reviews, because I truly enjoyed everything except for the greens. I'd probably give them a 4.5 star rating just because I didn't like the greens. The chicken was seasoned and fried perfectly. The turkey wasn't dry and the dressing was very good. The yams, green beans and mashed potatoes were all yummy. The cornbread muffin was moist and sweet. The VIP was mixed just right. Pretty good overall. I would definitely eat here again. From the fried chicken wings, to the catfish, to the fried green tomatoes, and even French fries, everything is made fresh to order and is perfectly crispy. When you enter, you will order and pay before sitting down. As you sit, all of the employees provide excellent and efficient service. It has a homey, comfortable feel inside. Four Ways is historical and a solid Southern meal, but the ambience and service was mediocre. I went for a late lunch and luckily there space in the parking lot or I would have kept driving. The area around Four Ways is pretty depressed and didn't feel very safe. When you enter there are 2 line choices: to go or dine in. Either way you go up to a guy manning a computer to order. After order you get directed to a cashier to pay and either wait for your to go or assigned a table. The quick service feel took away from the ambience. Pricing was fair as most entrees with 2 sides were about $12. There are runners to bring drinks, refill drinks, bring your food and clear tables. My chicken fried steak was good sized and tasty with some decent macaroni and cheese. The extra fried chicken wing I order was fresh fried, juicy and crispy--best item on the menu. The potato salad tasted store bought and the corn muffin from a mix. Overall I recommend for its history, but you can get better Southern food elsewhere in Memphis. read more

After touring the Civil Rights Museum, we wanted to continue with visiting historic places in Memphis. The Four Way was one of few establishments that allowed civil rights activists in its doors during that time/ Luckily for us, the family who owns this great restaurant were raised right in the community, and was able to share stories about the history of the restaurant and area. Their grandfather purchased it after the original family of the owners let it go. And I'm glad they were able to save it. The staff is family, and we got to chat with the daughter of the owner who was super knowledgeable and welcoming. From the time we walked in until we left, we felt the warmth, love, and care put into running this business. We had delicious food and great service. My sister and I dined at The Four Way today, and it was an awful experience. The restaurant is small, and the owner constantly complains about guests blocking the door--something unavoidable when everyone stands in one line. It would make sense to open two lines given the crowd. The owner's demeanor is loud, condescending, and disrespectful--especially toward women. At one point, he berated his wife in front of customers, which was extremely uncomfortable to witness. His treatment of us was dismissive and rude, yet he responded to male guests with calmness and courtesy. His tone and attitude were aggressive, unprofessional, and completely unnecessary. When we asked for fresh cornbread--it was brick hard--he snapped, insisting it was fresh. The replacement he brought later was clearly different. We're grown women who know what fresh food tastes like. His behavior came across as chauvinistic and ignorant. This isn't my first visit, but it will be my last. I've dealt with cold food before, even hair in my plate, and tried to give this place grace as a Black-owned business. But grace doesn't excuse bad behavior. The owner's arrogance, lack of respect for women, and hypocritical "spiritual" talk are appalling. Poor service, hostile atmosphere, and no regard for customers. I had an amazing lunch today at Four Way with a large group of my Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Dears. The servers were attentive to every need for almost 60 Dears. The food lived up to its name - delicious, generous serving and reasonably priced. Today I tried a new item- a fried catfish sandwich. It reminded me so much of the famous New Orleans PoorBoy!
