It was a long, 10 hour drive to arrive in Memphis. I've enjoyed a lot of the cuisine that this city has to offer but had never been to the Cupboard before. Upon walking in I knew that this place was gonna represent. My server was so precious. I have the feeling that she's been working here for a very long time. She was so friendly. 10:10 I started off w their sweet tea. So many places in town put so much sugar in their tea that you may as well ask for tea sugar. But the Cupboard has it just right. When you walk into a meat and three and it is completely packed with folks older than 70... you know it's gonna be a good meal:) And that it was! We've had dinner here before and loved it. This is a great meat and 3. Service is quick, polite and efficient. The veggies are among the best l ever had. I think the catfish would have been better blackened but it was as pretty good. My favorite place to eat in all of Memphis. The food is so good, very much like mother's or even better, Like Grandma Daisy's. As far as service, there is no better. Dexter, Will and Shannon (who I just met today) make it feel like family. Every single person I've met there, from the welcoming staff who seat you to the efficient people who ring you out are so nice! Big smiles from those clearing tables lifts my spirits. Warning, the Mac and cheese was VERY heavy and had a bit of a sweet taste, maybe made evaporated milk? However, any restaurant that lists Mac and cheese under the vegetable options makes kids happy. This place is A-Ok! That's really the best I can say. It comes up a lot when I search for a place to eat and I wonder, "why I have I not been back there"? I seem to be unable to remember why I don't frequent here in the interim between visits. I don't dig bad reviews, but this one is selfish because I don't see my memory getting any better. Inside is run down considerably and it probably hasn't been remodeled in 20-30 years at least. It looks like an old Shoney's inside without the bad ass salad bar. Some of you may not even know what that is. It's that old... There are high booths to sit in that were haphazardly built in a response to COVID I assume. I am pretty sure we are over it all now, on top of the fact that those did nothing to stop the spread, we can probably move on and tear out all that unsightly paneling mess between the booths. One of the managers was still now even wearing a mask, I salute you for that man, more will to live than me. Food is fair. It's good enough to eat, it's has calories and other stuff. The little cornbread muffins are the best thing, but they fuck that up with the whipped vegetable spread cups that they call butter. Ugh. My last visit I had the smothered pork chops. The rice under it was the shape of footballs and soaked with old moisture, inedible. The sides were body temperature cool and are frankly just bad. Pork chop was pretty good though. Kudos on that. Parking lot was full it extended into the overflow parking lot. I was almost about to leave but decided to park and see how long the wait was. Glad I did because I did not have to wait to be seated. There was plenty of room inside. The waitress Amber came right over introduced herself and took my complete order. She brought bread and my drink then shortly brought my food. I ordered the vegetable plate consisting of 2 sweet potatoes, corn pudding, Italian spinach and cabbage. The entire meal was hot and good. Of course I never finish my meal but always get a to-go box for later. Amber checked on me throughout the meal even though it was busy. As I paid at the register I was asked if I was satisfied with my meal and asked if I would like a bag for my to-go box which I kindly accepted. Pleasant atmosphere, great service and good hot food. Food/Taste/Flavor: 3/5 - Country Breakfast with home fries and Cavallo Special (rib-eye steak with 2 eggs) with hash browns. The country fried steak was overcooked and extremely salty and the extra salt from the gravy didn't help it much. The rib-eye steak was decent but slightly on the overcooked side for our liking. The home fries seemed to be some type of roasted potatoes so was quite confused since we were expecting fries. The packaging wasn't done well so the whole bag was oily including the utensils, biscuits, and toast. Service: 4/5 - busy restaurant and they seemed annoyed that we didn't immediately know where to order or what the items were. Waited about 25 minutes for our food to be made. First of all the service was excellent! The menu for Saturday's special was extensive and you could also get their other options. We chose the "plates" I posted. The bread was ok- a little in the dry side, butter would have helped, but we did not request any. Cornbread was not sweet- which I was happy about! For my meal, the dressing was delicious, most with the right amount of seasoning. Chicken was plentiful and tender, but had little to no seasoning itself- when combined with the dressing and gravy it was very nice. Mac and cheese was sweet? Texture was good, but I added more salt than I normally would- still overly sweet to me. Baked sweet potato was lovely! My hubby liked the cranberry sauce. His country fried steak was just ok, but nothing he would order again, other sides ok. Portions were generous. This restaurant has many signed photos of local and national celebrities on the walls. The staff is alway nice and polite but not the most attentive, but the place is generally pretty busy and they don't seem to have much staff so that's understandable. Generally speaking, the cashiers who work the front counter at the Cupboard have terrible customer service. I was charged .75 cents twice for a takeout order of two entrees, which is excessive so I decided to cancel the take out order and dine inside the restaurant instead. One of the cashiers--Jessica said she had removed both of the .75 cent charges from my order receipt after I asked her for clarification, but when I asked for an itemized receipt to make sure she calculated it correctly, she only took off one of the .75 cent charges. Later I asked the other cashier (with long blonde hair) if the entire previous transaction would be refunded since they had me make an additional payment after I finished dining in the restaurant. She assured me the entire amount would be refunded to my credit card, even though I showed her my refund receipt that didn't clearly reflect that a full refund was issued from the transaction. She said I would likely see the full refund reflected within my transactions soon. However after checking over a week later, I saw that my card was charged twice for the same meal, so I called the restaurant to dispute the extra charge. Darla, the manager did not call back hours after I called so I went up to the restaurant with my receipt and explained the problem. Jessica was there at the front counter again and lied, denying that she had anything to do with the charge, even though she did--and her name was clearly on my receipt. She and the other cashier also didn't apologize for the faulty take out charge or thank me for patronizing the restaurant at the time of payment for my meal. Fortunately my waitress was very attentive, accommodating and friendly, which helped somewhat improve my experience. But after being greatly inconvenienced due to the incompetence, dismissiveness, lack of integrity and overall rudeness of the Cupboard cashiers, I do not plan on eating there again. I'll give Darla credit for eventually resolving my issue and apologizing for the mistake, but it was still unacceptable to have to wait as long as I did after calling and going up to the restaurant to wait for someone to provide a refund. I also gave her feedback on Jessica's rudeness and hopefully she addresses it so other customers can have a better experience. Shout out to LaQuita for her excellent customer service though. The other cashiers would be wise to follow her example of tact, friendliness and professionalism in the workplace. Overall, I would not recommend the Cupboard restaurant to anyone who desires to receive consistent, great customer service and to feel like their patronage is genuinely appreciated because it's apparently not a priority at this establishment. read more

Think of going to your grandmas house for an meal and that about sums up what the Cupboard is. You walk in and your are amongst locals who are here for a good meal and a friendly face. This isn't some fancy spot but rather good eats. With that said they serve breakfast all day and they have a rotating menu of what's being served that day. However you aren't going to go hungry with the portion sizes. We opted for breakfast as it was between breakfast and lunch hours and we were just starting our day off but it was breakfast with a lunch vibe. I got the country breakfast that was chicken fried chicken with country gravy, two eggs (ordered over medium) hash browns, pancakes and biscuits for about $14. The hash browns needed some love and gravy needs some seasoning. My sister got the steak and eggs which came with biscuits and choice of hash browns or home fries. The steak was thin but was seasoned well also for about $14. I was checking out other peoples food at the tables around me and seriously everything looked delicious. Would I come back? Yep . . . I used to go to this restaurant at least once a week. After today's experience I'm doubtful I will ever go back. On 2-14-26 at 10:00 am I was quickly greeted and seated by the manager. After waiting for a server to acknowledge me for over 20 minutes I went back to the waiting area to make sure a server was aware I was there. While standing at the front desk I noticed my server appeared at my table. I walked back to the table and said that I wasn't sure she knew I had been seated there. The server (Shannon) immediately became irate stating that she was too busy. I mentioned that she took the person's order at the table next to me before she took mine, and that I arrived over 5 mins prior to his seating. Her demeanor and attitude continued to get worse, to the point I felt my service was going to continue to deteriorate and not get any better. So I told her never mind, I would not be dining there today. She quickly snatched the menu up and threw it toward the front of the restaurant. I requested to speak to the manager, who asked if I'd like to be seated somewhere else with a different server. I left the restaurant with the worst feeling I've ever had inside this restaurant. Again, I go there often and have been eating there for the last 15+ yrs. Occasionally I dine at the Cupboard up to 3 times per week. The food is generally good and I typically receive nice service. I have been served by Shannon several times before and her service is always worse that the other servers at the restaurant, but never as bad as it was today. Suggested that you request Shannon not be your server, or expect a bad attitude along with the terrible service that she tends to give.
