They may not have the best selection of lager but once you're there you don't mind. They have a lovely, green and well taken care of beer garden. This is a big bonus, especially during spring and summer. There is a roof over it, so even if it rains you can still enjoy sitting outdoors. We almost always get free treats as well; chips, sausages, mini burgers, sandwiches etc. which is very nice, they are all very good at making you feel welcome and appreciated as a customer. The same landlady had run it for 30 years and it had a quirky but very loyal, mainly local, customer base - and had won numerous awards over the years as London's best pub. The pub was acquired in 1998 by Youngs, who vowed to keep its character, but of course got a full liquor licence, and to start with made a bit of a hash of things - less friendly, dull menu, that sort of thing. Since then it has improved enormously, and whilst it is not what it was in the 1990's, is again a small, cosy local boozer with real ale and loads of character, which offers food at lunchtimes and evenings (though I've not eaten here for a while). The location ensures an extraordinarily varied mix of clientele, including wealthy Sloane types (Sloane Square is but a stone's throw away), old-fashioned Londoners and the devotees of stratospheric Anglo-Catholicism in nearby St Mary Bourne Street (see separate entry). Somehow the mix seems to work. There are lots of loyal regulars, so some find it a little cliquey - though I have to say this has never bothered me. Worth popping in, if you are in the area.

Luckily we found some stool seating by the front and were able to enjoy some beers and take in the ambiance. There's an upstairs that is accessible by a very very narrow staircase which even has handles for support, all part of the fun lol!! Beer: We tried out the Guinness (great pouring process!), peroni, and a local ale which the bartender allowed me to sample. He was very helpful and walked me through the different ciders they had in stock and even how you could add fruit syrups to sweeten the flavor. What makes this place even more memorable was the helpfulness of the young guy bartending. He helped us plan how to get to Gatwick airport extremely early the next morning and we owe him a big one!

You could spend a month looking at all of the photos, stickers, and items on the wall. We sat outside since the weather was nice. Despite having to sit near a guy who had to make sure all of London could hear him, it was great. We both got a couple of beers and I got the Lord Nelson, a burger with with bacon and egg. It was really good, but impossible to eat like a hamburger. Service was great!
