My family and I were in Notting Hill after visiting The Churchill Arms. We were expecting that they had fish and chips, but they only had Thai food. We specifically came to try fish and chips, so we were lucky that The Mall Tavern was nearby. Each of us ordered fish and chips, and all of our plates were left nearly empty. My goodness, I have never had better fish and chips than here at The Mall Tavern. The fish was crispy, and the chips were perfectly salted to taste. I appreciate that chips in England are more like potato wedges than classic American french fries. Way less fried and way less salty, so you can enjoy the actual taste of the potatoes! I also ordered a side of Mac and cheese that we all shared. I don't know what kind of cheese(s) was used, but it was the perfect starter to our meal. For dessert, we had the sticky toffee pudding for the first time. It was hard not to order another one!! We came in for late lunch, so the restaurant was empty. I assume they are much busier at lunch and dinner time. I also enjoyed the selection of beer while we waited for our food to come out. MY GOODNESS, place was incredible! I visited London with a group of friends, and we made a reservation well in advance, which I'm so glad we did. This restaurant was absolutely amazing from start to finish. I ordered the beef roast, and we also shared a side of the creamy cauliflower, which was to die for. I truly cannot sing the praises of this restaurant enough. The service was personable and welcoming, making it easy and comfortable to ask questions and try new things. One of the managers (apologies I don't know her name) checked in on us several times and even encouraged a few of us to try additional menu items. The food came out quickly, and once it arrived, the table went completely silent because we were all too busy enjoying every bite. If I could rate this place a 10/5 I would. This was a death row meal for me. WOW. We came here for a sunday roast with 8 people, of those 2 got fish & chips- the rest the roast. I was a fish person, and I am SO HAPPY I did! The fish at this restuarant will live in my head forever. Im not joking. I live in the US and I almost want to fly back to London just to have it again. The roast looked great too, many of my friends saying the meat was great and the gravy was flavorful. The staff were ALL so friendly, even offering the charge a phone that was dying! Well this place was pretty darn good. Let's start with the burger. It's a smashed burger with onions, pickles, bacon and a special sauce - it was delicious! The fish and chips- the fish had a crispy coating and it was seasoned perfectly. I wasn't a fan of the smashed peas, but then again I don't like peas. The regular fries were perfect. The Sunday roast was my favorite meal I had in London over my 4 days! It was so flavorful and each element complimented the next. It is a really cute pub with lots of space and even a space down stairs where they have live music. We came in today for the Sunday Roast, we have been waiting for weeks for our reservation and traveled 10+ hours to get here. We've heard incredible things so we were disappointed that when we arrived to our reservation, they had no more roast left. Unfortunately we will not be here next Sunday so we won't be able to try it. We ended up getting the fish and chips which were delicious. It comes with peas, tartar and a grilled lemon. It was very fresh, some of the best dish and chips I've ever had. I would definitely return but I wish they would've notified us about the roast ahead of time so we could've planned accordingly. This was such a delightful find. We tried another nearby pub that lost our reservation, seated us, but had run out of many of their main dishes. The menu featured gammon steak with an egg on top-my fav. But they were out of that and fish and chips having experienced a run on food! So we had the burger and chips. Both were very good-the chips were so fresh and crispy that we almost ordered another serving! We chatted with Natty for a bit- she's very sweet and recommended we return for their Sunday Roast! So a few of us booked a table and returned for the Sunday roast-and loved it! Mt first visit to the Mall Tavern and have to say was really pleased. Most of all the craft beer selection is very good, amongst the best I have found in my many visits to London. I keep forgetting it's here with the Mall Tavern just around the corner from the main drag that is Notting Hill Gate. Every time I take a bus to Kensington I am reminded and recently spotted a sign alerting me to the fact that there is a beer garden. I remembered when a friend and I were looking for a relaxed drink on a hot Saturday evening. While the more obvious pubs are overflowing with locals and tourists, the Mall Tavern remains a well kept secret. Yeah, I think it has good to great food. On the most recent visit, they had a particularly interesting combination of pate. It was a feast fit for a king. Other favorites have included standards like pork belly and grilled fish, but theirs are a few steps above the norm. Tucked away just south of Notting Hill Gate station, Mall Tavern is a perfect example of a gastropub. Semi-comfortable seating arranged around heavy wooden tables encourages you to sit down and relax long enough for a meal and a few drinks, but not to linger and nurse a pint for a few hours on a lazy Sunday. It has its quirks, for sure, such as the two baskets of crisps, one labelled "serious crisps" and one "funny crisps". What exactly the difference is I have no idea, but I appreciate the sense of humour. Service was on the top of their game with our waitress asking if I would like a drink before my butt even had a chance to introduce itself to my seat. I admit, I panicked a little at being asked for a decision so soon and said "I'll have what she's having" which luckily turned out to be a decent cider not any number of horrors (aka ales) that could have been there. The "she" was my friend, not a random girl just fyi. The menu isn't massive but provides 5-7 options for starters, mains, and desserts so more than adequate. I opted for the mushroom and chestnut pate as a starter, cow pie for the main, and sadly had to avoid dessert due to my Lent sacrifice. The pate was excellent with rich mushroomy flavour and a soft crunch of chestnut chunks mixed in. I found the creaminess of the chestnut really helped smooth the pate without giving it an oily slick taste you often get. I piled it on top of the provided flatbread and dug in. Other starter options around the table were deep fried brie with cranberry sauce (simple and tasty in small doses but a bit too much as a whole dish on its own), pork pie terrine (nutty pork terrine surround by a cold pastry crust - good by nothing noteworthy about it), and a tasting of carrot (carrot cake, with carrot soup, and something else carroty - didn't get to taste it as it was all the way on the other side of the table but looked fantastic). A note about the mains. The portion size is bloody huge. My cow pie (steak and ale filling) was about the size of my head and only tempered by the fact about a third was taken up by the marrow bone. The pie filling was brilliant and possibly one of the best steak and ale pies I've had. I would have liked the pastry to be a bit more flaky and too much of it was crusted on the edges of the dish and inedible. The seared bone marrow piled in the centre was also probably unnecessary and far too much on top of an incredibly filling dish. Tasty yes, but I couldn't eat more than a spoonful of it (the marrow, I knocked out the pie). Luckily, no one opted for dessert so my suffering was avoided but the sound of the sticky toffee pudding with homemade vanilla ice cream makes me want to go back to try just that. Other thoughts...the décor is nice, and you are definitely not rushed through your meal. The wait staff are attentive but not annoying, and it has a very open airy feel great for sunny days. Given the area, a great choice for an affordable tasty meal but as noted above, not for lounging around. read more

We waited two hours for our food and they brought the wrong dish then told us they could make the correct dish in 20 minutes but we could take the incorrect fish and chips. The manager said she would comp one of the 3 appetizers we bought in apology because we didn't want to wait for the correct meal. A pub added the word gastro in front of it so now it can charge crazy prices for food. Sure its better quality than your average place but still. Friends and I were popping in for a pint and maybe wanted to just grab some chips or a few snacks and it was just too much. To be honest the specialty cocktail menu looked tasty and it was just the names! Someone in the group recommended it and it was off on a side road, would not have walked by this place accidentally. They have a little teeny garden that is mostly covered by a stairwell, which actually was nice when it was raining and smokers still needed shelter.
