We were staying nearby and needed somewhere to grab a late dinner, as it was our first night staying in London. After a short walk around the area, we noticed that Fox was still open, so it was basically our only option at the time. There were a lot of people outside drinking, but we didn't see that many people eating, so that might be a sign. I ordered the BBQ chicken burger and my husband got the Fish & chips. I didn't care for my chicken burger at all, as it completely lacked flavor. The fries were good though. My hubby's fish was tasty though, so that was a plus. We did end up seeing one of the bartenders get into it with a customer & then argue with the manager about how he should have handled it, so that wasn't something that should have been hashed out in front of customers, so.... Overall, I don't think I would go back here for food, but if I'm in the market for a drink, I might stop in.

If you're staying at or working near Excel, Fox Excel is a fine option for a couple of ice cold pints and some generically perfect bar food. The atmosphere is approachable and the clientele is surprisingly diverse given the location. The live entertainment we experienced was hilariously bad, but that's not what we came for. My only real complaint comes from a number of underage people allowed to drink within this establishment. On our most recent visit, there were a lot of young people obviously under the age of 18 getting seriously wasted. They were clearly having a good time but were very rowdy and offensive. I have a pretty thick skin generally, but when my co-worker was hassled by some of the youths at the bar for her American accent, it was time for us to leave.

The Fox Excel is part of a larger warehouse space by the ExCeL convention space on the outskirts of London, close to London City airport. It's essentially a pub, with a decent menu, all things considered. Food: This a breakfast and a lunch review, as we had a few meals here during our stay. Breakfast: The full English - two eggs any style, bacon rashers, a Cumberland sausage, hash brown, tomato, mushroom cap, baked beans, and toast - was incredible. Eggs are cooked to your liking, bacon is perfect as is the sausage, and everything else on the plate. The eggs and avocado on toast was equally delicious, and a healthier option if you prefer that. Lunch: The fish and chips were delicious. Good batter. Chips were soft on the inside and crisp on the outside. Tartar sauce had good flavor. I'm not a fan of mushy peas, but I heard they were lovely, mashed with mint as they do. The burger was another good option for lunch. Service: As with most pubs in the U.K., you order and pay at the bar, and they'll bring it out to you. Friendly and efficient at the bar, and the table service was equally so. Cost: Two breakfasts, a tea and a latte ran us about £22. Which wasn't bad considering the buffet breakfast at my hotel was £17 per person. Lunch was just as inexpensive at about £24. Overall: They open early at 8am. Easy to walk to. Near the event space. Good food and friendly staff. Free and accessible WiFi. Bathrooms are clean. Lots of seating in and outside. Give it a go!

This must be a weird pub when there isn't anything going on at The Excel. This place is HUGE. Get lost in it while a bit drunk big. Hang on this isn't where I came in big. Was this the bar I was at earlier, nope, good grief how did I get here big. Because it has to be. As the Excel kicked out around a thousand rowdy roller derby fans, the staff must feel like the men at Helms Deep about to weather a storm of demanding bar patrons. And they did so in fine style. Efficiency is key here, take order, serve, change. BANG! On to the next one. It could be impersonal and robotic, but the staff are all friendly - but not at the expense of the speed. There were plenty of places to sit, and plenty of different areas, so it didn't just feel like a booze - warehouse. The only issue I really had with the place was a lack of the most party hard of all spirits - Jagermeister. But to be honest, it's not a huge problem.

Ahhh the Fox. I have fond memories of this place... When I was an Enterprise Officer I met Mal and had a great night dancing to 8-bit versions of songs. As Zatana I met Starlord and had another great night getting down to nerdy theme tunes. During the day at ComicCon I come here to find a seat, have a bit of alcohol to ease the pain of walking in high heels all day and to give me enough Dutch courage or warmth to see me through the rest of the day. At night... at night the Fox at ExCel is a treasure trove of beautiful women and nerdy men. (Caveat: I have only ever been here after ComicCon) The Fox is THE place to be after the con, screw the parties you have to pay to enter, this is where you come to meet friends you might have missed during the day, to see the cosplayers relax and show off what their costumes allow them to do. It's crowded, it's loud, it's hot, you NEED to get a stamp on your hand if you are going to be standing outside (otherwise you have to sneak people in through one of the back-doors) getting served is easier at the top bar, but the dancefloor is where it is at. Just watch out for all the props, not everyone is forgiving when you break their staff/ scythe/ helmet/ suit. I hope to see you there at the next ComicCon!

Nicht schlecht für Mittagessen während einer Messe. Gute Bedienung und das Essen ist OK. (Mein Reis was völlig verkocht, aber sonst war alles gut.) Man kann gut hier mit Leute reden.

Certainly not the best bar I've ever been in. I didn't feel that the atmosphere was very welcoming. I found the Polish bar maids here to be surly, whilst not exactly unpleasant, they weren't very friendly or helpful to a guy who asked for a receipt for his drinks and food. Admittedly, the bar was busy during a big show at the Excel next door. Food is usual bar 'fast' food, although not very rapid in its delivery. It was brought over with no cutlery and I had to go in search of knives and forks, and ask other diners for condiments. The big open space that must have been an old warehouse down in the docks, was very echoey, and not the sort of place to go for a quiet drink.

Good enough for a few pints after a show if the DLR is too busy. Or if you just want a few pints.

The staff could be a little friendlier, it would benefit from some craft beers and the place needs a bit of TLC. It's a stunning building with some really wonderful features. The room at the back, which the toilets are off, has a really gorgeous glass ceiling, and there's some lovely stained glass around. This is one of the main West Ham United supporters pubs so definitely one to stay away from on match day (unless you're a West Ham supporter!). With West Ham moving to the Olympic Stadium next season, it will be interesting to see what happens to The Boleyn. It is offering membership which includes transport to the new stadium so perhaps it'll still be a football pub but I hope it means it will be given some attention so that is a good local for us folk nearby. They have started doing a monthly quiz and they also have a karaoke night every so often, so it seems they are trying to make it a pub for more than just football fans. I hope within the next year, this will be a great place to go out with friends. I'd also love it to start doing some good food too. Perhaps we'll have to watch this space.

We went for a Sunday roast and it coincided with when they had a live jazz band playing. It's quite shabby chic, but really quite big. There's a room out the back which is more of a dining room but we stayed in the front bit as that's where the music was. It was busy but we got a table and people came and went so there was normally space for those arriving. The roast dinner was the best I've probably ever had out, certainly in London and at £12 each it wasn't bad at all. There was so much meat (we both had the lamb) and it was so tender and juicy. It had the largest, tastiest homemade Yorkshire pudding I've ever seen, crispy goose fat roast potatoes and perfectly cooked parsnip, carrots and cabbage. It had really delicious gravy too. The drinks were cheap and the jazz band were brilliant. When they weren't playing, there was a guy in the corner with decks playing LPs. There have been some comments on here from other reviewers about the toilets. The ladies were really clean and nicely decorated so may have been refurbished recently. My boyfriend went to the men's and said they weren't the best but not that bad so they may have had some work recently too. This pub is really handy for Forest Gate station and also Wanstead. We had a lovely walk around Wanstead Flats before going to the pub so there's lots to do if you travel to the area. We'll definitely be visiting a lot more.

There is always a good range of beers, typically including Adnams and Doom. There is a long bar counter in the main lounge, service is friendly and fast. The pub is not dominated by music, though there will be some playing unless there is a big sporting event on. The quiet bar has a smaller counter. Quiet is a relative term, there's usually a good friendly hubbub. Food is served at mealtimes, check the website before you go if you intend on eating there. Portions and flavours are robust. Menu choices are not extensive, there will be pies, omelettes and sandwiches on the menu at reasonable prices. It's great to get a square meal now that so many pubs have gone gastro. The pub is probably one of the oldest buildings in Plaistow, thought the frontage is only a century or two old, and the windows are far more recent. Stand back across the street and you can see what looks like a medieval roof line. There is a beer garden at the back, and at the front there is a seafood stall in the car park.

But even with the bar set low, the Black Lion was a very pleasant and welcome surprise. Who would have expected an historic, CAMRA-award-winning Tudor pub, complete with thick-hewn timbers, ambered-glass windows and excellent beers on draught? Not this traveller. The handles carried Doom Bar, John Courage, and two guest beers, all of which were fresh and well-poured. There are three mid-size TV screens (only one was on, and the sound was very low), and this is a pub that welcomes the sporting type, but it is neither loud nor yobbish. The crowd at this Free House is almost exclusively locals, ranging from fringe-hipsters to racing fans. You are not going to get smiles and high-fives, but everyone doesn't stop and stare when an "outsider" walks in either, thankfully. Service was a mixed bag--one friendly bartender and one aloof blonde girl who negligently smoked a vapourizer and looked as if she wouldn't cross the street to piss in your mouth if your teeth were on fire (i.e. not very friendly). The lass had sass, though, and what are the stubbornly non-trendy areas of NE London about if not a bit of attitude? Plaistow is no place the weak of heart or slow of wit, after all. If you want some doofus with a perma-grin that stops dead at the eyes, go to a Kensington Starbucks (or, better yet, just leave London).
