We brought my daughter in a stroller and a dog on a leash and found the crowds manageable, and a nice family friendly ambiance. The vendors had quite some variety - olive oils, dip mixes, fruits, veggies, coffees, bakery, food trucks, local ketchup, flowers, etc. They also had some live music which was fun. I get there right at 8am and beeline to that stand. They give you a pager while you wait which gives me time to do a lap or two around the market. I have purchased beets, potatoes, zucchini and cherries this season but it's not something I get every market like the pizza. There are other great food vendors there too like the National Cafe and Press Waffles. Only a few more markets left for the season!

I do notice that some days I come with the solid shopping list in mind, only to be inspired by the fresh produce to change my weekly menus. Yesterday I got fresh eggs, aged cheese, radishes, green beans, mushrooms, cauliflower, a brisket sandwich, Flowers, and other odds and ends. I've never seen it crowded which makes it quick in and out. Parking in the area can be tricky, but there's usually a spot somewhat close to the one block market area. Was also hoping for a fresh produce seller, and I'm sure the neighborhood families that flock to this market would eat it all up. Sadly, we missed the memo that there were other food trucks there besides Heirloom - behind the church in their parking lot. But that just gives us a reason to return.

2021 is the first year for the Washington Heights Night Market (held once a month on Thursdays) and…read moreit's a nice little event! The location is between 54th and 55th on Washington Boulevard, so right in the middle of the neighborhood. This was the first market day and it was great to see how well attended it was. There were roughly 20 stands, mostly local crafters. Vennture was pouring beer, Charles Fromage had wine and snacks and Heirloom brought the food truck. There was even a fashion bus which was fun. I left with a few candles from Fern and Leaf and had a good time. I'd love to see some produce suppliers at future markets, and maybe another food truck.

I recently stopped by Pete's Fruit Market for the first time after hearing about it. As soon as I…read morewalked in, I saw buckets of vegetables: peppers, tomatoes, squash, you name it. Most buckets seemed to be about 6-8 inches in diameter and prices ranged from $1 to $5. I only wish they offer smaller buckets instead of such a big bucket. It is hard to buy in bulk with smaller household and I don't like to freeze produce. I was curious about the quality of the produce, but I wasn't too impressed. For example, the apricots looked a little banged up--kind of like the "misfit" produce I've seen before. There was upbeat Mexican music playing, which gave the place a fun vibe, and the store itself isn't that big. A security guard was stationed outside. They had yellow-flesh watermelon at $0.99/lb, and giant seeded watermelons for $16 each--which felt pricey, especially since I had just come from Costco where I got a decent-sized watermelon for $6 (though admittedly smaller than the ones at Pete's). I also noticed mangoes going for $2 each, which again felt steep. I had been hoping to find some Mexican pastries, but nothing really stood out, and there weren't any prepared foods available. However, I saw they got a catering menu which I thought it might be good to have a food court selling those items. I was expecting something more like La Michoacana or Fiesta stores in Texas, but this wasn't it. In the end, I just picked up a few Mexican candies like Pulparindo and called it a day. I was a bit disappointed with the fruit selection, especially the lack of tropical options. On the plus side, they have a fairly large, gated parking lot, which is convenient. I'm glad I visited, but not sure I'll be rushing back anytime soon.
