The Owner was extremely condescending. After waiting almost an hour to be seen, I was helped by a friendly associate at the front desk. But I asked why his order form asked that I put my social security number down. No retailer asks you for this incredibly sensitive piece of information. Even when you're buying 1000s of dollars worth of merchandise. It is not even stored securely, they are asking you to write it down on a piece of paper. When the Associate asked the owner why he asks for Social Security numbers, he insultingly told me to look at the price tag of the violin which said it was $600. But I'm not buying a $600 violin, Im renting a violin for $17. I have seen other feedback about how condescending the owner is and this appears to be a trend. In addition the store is very messy. Boxes and papers strewn all over the place that you can barely walk. I am not writing my social security number down on a piece of paper to have it strewn across the store. read more

I'm in my late 60's (first time saying that, wow) and I've been coming to Foxes since I was in 5th grade. Bought my first trumpet here decades ago, but my review is about the FREE service one of their folks gave my daughter on her guitar. He pulled out an Allen wrench and tighten the neck on her guitar. Strummed it a few times and it never sounded better. She ended up recording over 50 songs in LA, but did open mics in Manassas and DC with that guitar before buying her first. When I purchased my first brand new clarinet from Foxes, the staff was very accommodating of my questions and allowed me to look at several different ones ones before I came to a decision, giving me a very reasonable price below MSRP. Later when my clarinet developed cracks while breaking it in they offered to replace it instead of having me wait for them to send it back to the manufacturer for repair. The customer service I received has been excellent and as such they are my first choice for music instrument needs. They also have a large selection of sheet music for various instruments and you can spend a lot of time just browsing their selection. Because of this I absolutely recommend them. On top of the great service and selection they provide, they are a local business that I am proud to support and encourage others to do likewise. read more

Been going to Foxes since my son was in elementary school & he is now a sophomore in high school. Hands down they are the best in the area - or at least Fairfax County. It is an eclectic little shop, on a busy street, and next to some of my fav restaurants. They have a wide variety of instruments, supplies and even gifts. They offer lessons and their entire staff is very knowledge. We always find exactly what we are looking for or recommendations on how to find it. We have rented an instrument from them for years and the service is impeccable. We have had repairs, traded for upgrades, bought equipment and supplies, and purchases fun, whimsical Knick knacks. They have everything from beginning to professional from brand spanking new to lovingly used. It's a great spot for musicians find what they need! read more

I appreciate that this is a local business run by real musicians, but their service is inconsistent at best. I was frustrated by staff who just literally handed me an instrument to rent (after filling out paperwork) only to discover later that the make/model wasn't the higher calibre we had wanted. I felt like the staff should have at least asked us a few questions, let my child play the instrument, and ensured that it was what we needed, before walking away with it. It would have saved us a trip. It's a small store, crowded with books and people. They have a really nice selection of music and instrument rentals. However, expect a wait between 20-60 minutes; it is always busy. Depending on whom you get, you can get extremely great service or indifferent service. read more

I recently moved to the area and my daughter wanted to try violin for the first time for the couple of months while our belongings are in storage. Alex at Foxes responded to my online new student inquiry and set us up for a trial lesson. The store was full of instruments, books and other things you could ever need to learn to play various instruments. Very old school, focused on just music and not appearance. Alex followed up after the lesson to see how everything went and offered to either set up a permanent schedule or help us find a new teacher or studio if Foxes was not a good fit. I responded that we are moving again soon, a bit far away from the studio. Alex said it's OK to do lessons just for a couple of months and move, and she'd also ask around for recommendation in my new area. Attached some links to find teachers as well. Based on how giving and caring this person was, I would trust Foxes to be genuinely focused on the student and to have high integrity. I would definitely go to Foxes if I was located nearby. I don't know if I ever mentioned it, but pre-baby I worked at a nonprofit. The goal of the association was to encourage music education in schools, and overall. Being the nature of the beast, many of the lovely people I worked with were former music teachers, and some even still taught on the side or did tutoring or music lessons every once in a while. They always talked about shopping at Foxes, so when I was in Falls Church I went in and checked it out. The selection of sheet music here is pretty amazing. They have the classics like Beethoven and Mozart, but also have sheet music for musicals and even movies. They also sell movie soundtracks on CD. They also rent out and sell instruments like guitars and keyboards. The major draw here is the discounts they offer to music teachers as well as discount bins and tables of music available to everyone. read more

The staff might not have ever seen Black people before. I stopped by in an effort to find a gift for my pianist friend and support a locally owned small business. I noticed the staff was very helpful with their White customers, while they only stared at me the entire time I browsed. On my way out of the store as I walked past the counter, one of the workers finally spoke and tersely asked, "Can I help you?". Clearly, I was not welcome. I'm not sure if they are aware people of color are musicians, too, but consider yourself warned. I promptly went to the Guitar Center at 7 Corners and found a gift for my friend with much better service. read more

I've only come here for repairs on my french horn, but I'm very impressed. The first time, the brass guy didn't even charge me. The 2nd time he charged me very little. Both times he did the repair on the spot and was thorough and quick. The staff is very helpful. *Don't park in the teeny tiny lot adjacent to the building. It's hard getting in/out of there, since several businesses share it. There's a side street just west of the store w/parking. read more

Great selection of music compositions. They have sheet music and books. They will order anything you can't find. They also have guitars, amplifiers, low end keyboards, and other random musical instrument accessories. This place is pretty large and easy to miss. Way better than Music and Arts Center. This place reminds of how Music Land in Bel Air Maryland was years ago, kinda a grab all for music sales featuring many many guitars but also all the other instruments that soccer moms and dads bring their elementary school aged kids in to buy. The selection of guitars is actually alright carrying everything from jazz, flamenco, to straight up rock and shred guitars. Problem is this place is so damn small and cramped especially when it gets busy. Then to boot, there is occasionally an award local male aged whatever-teen to age thirty-something looking to chat about band crap to you as you are trying out an instrument. Happened twice to me and I blame the store for this due to both its crampedness but also tolerating local yocal types to come in and hang out. Sorry, but I don't want to chat with you about what you're into music wise or how you think I could fit into whatever local music project is going on. He does a good job of teaching theory and practical techniques according to your level, and he has a great background range of music! We ducked in here on our way to El Patron next door. What a fun joint! The front has all these goofy music-theme tchotchkes and gifties. The whole rest of the store is kind of like the Ollivander's Wand shop of music stores. They had super-deluxe quality instruments just out where you could play'em if you liked. So I got to enjoy a Martin ukulele, best quality, on sale for a paltry $1200. At my home music shop they keep that kind of thing behind glass! I really loved getting to play that. Thank you!! They do a great job of setting up your guitar. Steve cleans the fretboard, polishes the frets and checks the action, not just replace the strings. Plays like a much more expensive instrument after. He's usually at the shop on Saturdays and Sundays. Highly recommended! read more

We love Foxes! My daughter has been taking guitar lessons there for over two years now. She started with Kevin and has continued on with Nick now that Kevin has moved away from the area. She loves her guitar lessons with Nick and she gets excited about getting to move on to a new song when she's mastered one. Nick is kind, patient and not intimidating, which is a huge plus for my somewhat reserved child. Also recommend Foxes in general if you're looking for lessons. Their registrar Alex is super kind, compassionate and a pleasure to talk to each week. She makes the registration and payment process simple and I appreciate that! read more

Worst experience was with one of the piano teachers here. We had scheduled to visit with the piano teacher. The school had all my daughters details (age, etc) and still told us to come for the visit. First, the teacher refused for us to see inside the piano studio. Why? I'm still baffled. Then, he concluded in a few minutes of discussing with us (calling my wife aside to tell her) that my daughter apparently wasn't ready, despite the fact that I mentioned that she's already in a music school, has started playing and is now reading notes. It is absolutely fine to turn down a prospective student. However, the very least you would expect from a music school and its teachers is that, for a very interested kid (and parents), you try the kid out on the piano and see what the child's skill level is and then make an informed decision on this basis. Then explain, what the child needs to be doing before considering to take the child as a student. Apparently, for the esteemed teacher here, none of this appears to matter. read more
