It's odd that there's both a real Emergency Room and an Urgent Care at the same location. My Chief…read moreof Staff came to the Emergency Room on her own after stubbornly ignoring stroke symptoms until the symptoms went away. Thus, what she experienced was a Transient Ischemic Attack, which shaved off a few years of my life from worry. This is pertinent because the young (they are all young) physician and physicians assistant seeing her explained to her why I was concerned and why she should have immediately gone to an Emergency Room when experiencing dizziness and left sided weakness and numbness. I am reporting symptoms so everyone knows the signs of a stroke, slurred speech, weakness or paralysis on one side of the body, dizziness, strange smells (burnt toast), disorientation, especially very early in the morning when blood pressure is usually highest. When you see symptoms like this, get to a real Emergency Room (not an urgent care) right away. If the symptoms go away on their own, it's only a TIA, which is a warning that you or the patient is at higher risk of a true stroke, and it's so much better for diagnosis if you can get the patient to an EKG and CT scan or MRI while they still have the symptoms. If it's a true stroke (a cerebrovascular accident), there's lots of treatment now available that can dramatically increase not just chances of recovery but also the possibility of recovery with good prognosis. Don't spend time in denial. While the physician, PA, nurse, and radiology tech were all great, Froedtert has outrageous rates, and very aggressive billing. Other than the medical staff, the organization is just bloodthirsty bureaucratic capitalist greed incarnate.

I've been made felt like I was wasting their time, where truly they've wasted mine. I sat patiently and waited on care/answers. The NP that serviced me that evening did the bare minimum, and the M.A should have given a more kind and welcoming attitude. As customer healthcare service is highly important as we the patients is who they service we are the consumers. I left my two young children at home with my husband for an urgent matter only to leave feeling like I wasn't taken care of. I am still in pain and still with worry for my health. I am sadden to say I will not recommend this location to family or friends as I am a fellow health team member and I am disappointed in my experience.

I've grown disenchanted with the aggressive and insulting insurance shakedown process at…read moreColumbia-St. Mary's. They have some excellent physicians and paraprofessional staff, but in order to get treatment, you have to penetrate a thick protective covering of non-medical, unsympathetic, call center drones who clearly prioritize ability to pay. I hope you never know the discomfort of diverticulitis, but under those conditions it's even more annoying to have to repeat all your insurance information no less than five times to make a distant appointment to see a physician. So lower back pain isn't quite at that level, but I didn't want to play a long game of phone tag and proving over and over again that I have good insurance so I was attracted to a Wheaton Franciscan orthopedic clinic website that seemed to allow appointment requests via e-mail. As it turns out, no one monitors those email requests, so you have to go through the phone process in a very similar manner to the other big giant hospital corporation. I was complaining about this situation to a nurse friend who was complaining about the negative reviews here, blaming the patients for using the urgent care facilities instead of making appointments with the appropriate primary care or specialist physicians and I realized none of the workers from bottom to top have any idea of how hard it is to do that when you're really uncomfortable. There's some serious cultural lag here, I can make appointments using Internet technology with my dentist, I can make my own appointments and choose my seat assignments online for travel by airplane, it's just ridiculous that the medical profession insists on sticking with 1970s communication technology for scheduling. They sent my paperwork by snail mail, for me to hand write, so when I got there they manually entered it into the system! It's like some Soviet bureaucrat designed their intake system. Okay, so the point of my rant here is to put things in perspective. Wheaton Franciscan is not any worse than the other two big box hospital corporations in terms of prioritizing patient ability to pay, being inconvenient to gain entry, and as having numerous costly and indefensible predatory charges. The whole industry makes air travel charges seem absolutely benign and kindly. Health care doesn't follow the usual laws of supply and demand, the highest prices are found where the greatest concentration of physicians and hospital facilities are found. Wheaton Franciscan doesn't overcharge any more than the other two, and once you get in here, the physicians, nurses, and techs are highly competent. Parking is easy, convenient and free. This location has a nice cafeteria, this is one area where some visible progress has been made since the 1970s.

Came here for a hip injection (not cool, modern, and groovy but rather anatomically located left…read morepelvis proximal end of my femur) and I was rather anxious having researched the procedure. Of course I also researched the surgeon, one very capable fellow named Dr. Edwards who has an impressive training and experience record. Yes, I have trust issues. He was just the right combination of confidence, respectful bedside manner, and efficacy that made me feel silly when it was over and done with in the blink of an eye. For procedures like this, do not look at the needles, but do be aware of how far away (in surgeon's distances) important nerves are from said needles. The current imaging technology that allows for well guided needle insertion also makes these extremely low risk routine procedures. I'm still talking to myself here. The clinic is clean, the staff is very good, I especially appreciate being treated as if I'm not old and confused when I do provide some evidence that this might be the case. I do not see the need for the physician's assistant, seemed a superfluous extra cost layer but that's American Healthcare. The only complaint I have is a pretty serious one, it's very hard to get in for an appointment in the first place. I was referred 6 weeks before the procedure by my Ascension nurse practitioner (excellent btw, NPs are a better choice for primary care) but I had to call myself. The first four calls didn't get me through a completely non-medical screening agent who was only interested in my financial situation. But also they were all quite incompetent, they could not ascertain, verify that I have Medicare plus supplemental. I do, but since they couldn't substantiate this, they wouldn't make an appointment. I was in considerable discomfort which is why I was persistent, but they clearly do not care about patient pain or health at the entry level. I had to make an appointment with another orthopedic surgeon (another 3 phone calls) who works with Dr. Edwards at another clinic and get referred back to Edwards. All of these phone calls of course have to be while I'm supposed to be working. Then, once scheduled, the surgical clinic has to call and talk to me in person, again while I'm at work and not allowed to take phone calls. It's like the clinic, indeed much of the American healthcare delivery system is stuck in the 20th century for communications technology. Heck, I'm an old man and I learned how to use Google Calendar, Internet messaging, e-mail, and SMS. I know it's possible, my nurse practitioner and her office, and dentist as well can use all of these so communication is quite easy. The getting in part was so unpleasant and inconvenient this might have been a two star review in spite of how adept Dr. Edwards is if it weren't for a single act of respect from the front desk person (I won't name her in case she wasn't supposed to do this) who agreed that the office needs to catch up and move on from late 1900s phone tag. Or maybe I should find my telephone answering machine and hook it back up.
