I was on a drive from Sacramento, CA to Orem, UT to give my daughter away in marriage when my truck began losing power on the western slopes of the Sierras. I debated turning back but I was loaded up with wedding supplies, which created serious timing and logistical concerns. With my check engine light flashing (indicating a critical condition) I prayed that it was either a fluke or something not too difficult to repair. As I hit the summit and the engine load eased the check engine light turned off and I breathed a sigh of relief. I still needed a plan though because these things don't solve themselves. After a quick search I found that Frank's was not far away. As I pulled in I was not optimistic about the level of service or concern that I might receive because of my unfamiliarity with the area. But my mind was quickly changed when the owner greeted me. Professionally dressed and attentive he listened to my predicament and offered to have a tech diagnose the problem. Since there was no active code (check engine light was still off), they used their scan tool to discover that one of my cylinders was misfiring. At this point I needed to decide whether to push on or find a U-Haul rental and transfer everything over. With their input I decided on the former. The owner did not charge but encouraged me to tip his tech (who was very considerate). I was way ahead of him and gladly gave the young man a twenty. In the end, I made it to my destination but not without a few concerning moments. At my Airbnb I was able to swap out my coils and plugs (with the help of my mechanic son who knew what I was up against and was able to pack some essential tools prior to his arrival from out of state) and the problem was solved. I've just come from Frank's Automotive Service and I am smiling. First, I learned it is a family business. Danny is the owner. The men working their are his sons and cousins. I think this often makes a difference. They may be nice anyway, but also there is the incentive to provide excellent and friendly service. I brought my RV for service. Tony drove me to the storage place (Verdi Executive RV & Boat Storage - If I haven't recommended them on Yelp, I need to do it.) ... anyway Tony drove me there where my car was parked. Danny told me that someone would also drive me home (a few miles from their business) when I bring my car for service. The work was excellent. They topped off the fluids. They did a thorough inspection. They said the RV was in good shape. They also said that the oil had been changed 2000 miles ago. They recommend changing it at 3000 miles. Prior to my trip I had new injectors put in my truck, after 500 miles broke down. Frank said 2 injectors went bad and replaced $1000. After 500 miles broke down again, finally a mechanic that knew the problem. All injectors including one installed by Frank were installed wrong. He removed all injector and installed correctly 3000 miles later no problems. Don't think Frank should be working on diesel engines. Also tried to get in touch with Frank and no response. read more

My wife and I did a 4-day weekend to Reno this past weekend. When we went to leave on Monday an ESC Warning Message displayed on my 2010 C-300. As a result I had zero acceleration with the car. I was able to shut off the car, turn it back on and go a little more only to have it keep faulting and losing acceleration. By the time we reached Verdi, I knew I needed help and was not going to make it back tot the Bay Area. We were stuck at the Chevron right on I-80. "Google were are the closest auto mechanics?" Frank's Automotive Service was the closest from where we were so I knew I was able to coast it down to them. Chris was able to get the car in and immediately run an engine diagnostics which determined the 'throttle body unit' went south. 127K+ miles something is bound to go wrong with original parts. Unfortunately, since it was late in the afternoon, Chris was unable to get the part that day. However, Chris provided options which saved time and money (i.e. Bosch make Mercedes parts, so stick with Bosch and forgo the Benz logo). Chris drove us (bags and all) to the nearest hotel, and the next morning our car was fixed. The owner Dan even picked us up in our car which gave me a strong sense of security. They both road tested the hell out of the car! We got back on the road, and the car ran great all the way home. I hope to never get stranded again in Verdi (no offense), but if I do, Dan and Chris are our go-to guys to fix our vehicles! Make sure you hit Outlaw Coffee across the street too! read more

I have a 1997 Subaru that I needed to do a vehicle inspection on. When I arrived for my appointment (and throughout), I received friendly and professional service. I had called earlier in the week to make the appointment and Chris remembered exactly what the issues I was worried about were. He gave me honest feedback and one of the staff even picked up on a random tool that had been left behind after I had a replacement done a while ago (which was causing a concerning noise). Several people have looked at my car before this and were not able to locate the source of the noise, so this really was exceptional. I had also been told months ago at a shop in Reno that I "urgently" need to replace one of the axles and was quoted a ridiculous price. Chris inspected and told me honestly that it wasn't in fact urgent. Such a change from the usual greed of auto repair shops. Thanks to Chris and the staff for such a pleasant experience! This shop is dishonest. brought my car in for a noise i was hearing when i was going fast under bridges. They told me it was the power steering pump and it would be $640. to replace. I saved up the the money and made an appointment 6 weeks later. Then i dropped off my car and they called me 4 hrs later and said there was no noise and it was fine. I asked if they were sure because they said that was what was wrong with it last time. They looked at it again and called me 1 hr later and said yes they got the power steering to make the noise and even recorded it. So i said if they were sure that was what was wrong with it, then yes please replace it. Picked up my car that evening and when i went to work the next day, the noise was still there so i dropped it off again. When I picked it up at the end of the day they said my car was leaking oil and there was 0 left and they had to add all the oil (no charge) and it would be Thousands of dollars to fix so i should just sell it and it what money i could out of it and buy a new one. I had just got my oil changed 2 weeks prior and had a small oil leak for over 2 years. I drive 600 + miles a week from reno to sac and check my oil every couple days because of the leak and mileage i drive. There was a perfect. amount of oil 2 days prior. I was shocked when he said this. I got home and checked the oil and it was not new oil, it was very much dirty used oil still. Instead of this place just telling me they couldn't figure out what the noise was, they charged me to replace a part that wasn't broke and said "well it would have needed to be replaced eventually" and out and out lied. BTW i took my car to a great shop in reno and they figured out was the noise was. It was my back antenna whistling in the wind, they adjusted it to a new position and the noise on the way. don't go to the shop they will lie and rip you off. read more

I had a Class C MH with a bad fuel pump. I had given up hope of finding any shop in Reno to fix it, let alone for a reasonable price. One day I was cycling past Franks Automotive and I decided to ask if they could do the job. Dan the guy in charge told me it was no problem. And I could supply the fuel pump. Try that at any other repair shop, good luck.. I managed to get my MH to the shop and it was fixed in less than 2 days. Wow! I have found my new auto repair shop. Honest and affordable mechanic. My '94 4Runner had been leaking coolant for about 4 months. My wife was driving the vehicle around on Sunday and experienced a sharp, sudden drop in power. I called around getting prices to fix the water pump and run diagnostics on the loss of power on Monday, dropped it off on Tuesday, and had the vehicle back on Wednesday. Chris had great communication throughout the whole process, calling me with updates as he progressed through the repair. I generally try to do all of my own repairs, but will definitely be coming back in the future and recommend to anyone that needs repairs. read more

So....they weren't able to fix my truck. But to me, that was ok. It was a diesel and they aren't diesel mechanics. But these are some straight shooting people. I had my truck towed to them because they were the closest ones to me and was hoping there was a chance. They took a look at for me, diagnosed it, but couldn't do any repairs. They gave me the best advise they could, but didn't charge me since there was nothing they could really do. Just overall good people, which is more of what we need in today's world. If any of my gas vehicles ever need work, I will take it to them even if its out of my way. read more

Excellent service. We are from Sacramento and came to Boomtown for a 3 days getaway. On 3/26, Our car would not start. Seems the starter went out. We got our car towed to Frank's. We explained our situation that we would like our car to be fixed ASAP as we are trying to get back home. About two hours later, maybe not even two hours, our car was fixed and running. My old 1994 Fleetwood RV was overheating on a Saturday before we were headed to Burning Man. Everything in Truckee was closed except for the typical thieves that work at the 2 Unocal stations. Union 76 reviews were too scary so I called Truckee Unical for a quote on a new thermostat (I was pretty sure that was the problem as it was having all the classic signs). Was told they didn't care about my thermostat theory and it would cost $89.99 to diagnose the problem (they would hook it up to a machine). Then it costs $150 per hour (2 hour minimum) plus parts to fix it. So I could count on paying at least $390 plus the cost of the thermostat and anything else they could bleed out of me. I yelped and googled much of Reno and found mechanics were either closed weekends, didn't work on RV's (which is stupid the engine is a chevy 454 and it's easy to get to everything) or too busy to squeez me in. I was prepared to suck it up and pay the vampires at Truckee Unical when I came across Franks with no reviews and an address that won't work on my GPS. They were open on Saturday, only about 12 miles east from down the hill towards Reno. Spoke first to Jose who was very friendly on the phone and said he could work on it right away. Long story short, they replaced the thermostat (no diagnostic fee) and had me on my way in about 2 hours. Whole thing cost $125 so I saved at least $300. I would definitely recommend these guys if you are in the area. Dan & Jose are honest and do good work. read more

Worth the cost of the repair especially because they weren't satisfied till the car was fixed correctly which took them staying past closing time and doing extra research just to be able to complete a difficult repair. Danny-the owner is a great mechanic. The check engine light was on in my jeep. My mom who has used him several times before recommended I take it to Frank's. I dropped my car off Monday afternoon, he gave me a ride back to my house and it was ready the next day. He also offered to pick me up but I had a ride from a friend. They stayed open a little later than they normally do so that I could pick my jeep up. Very reasonably priced. I highly recommend this shop to anybody. read more

8/9/17-I'm willing to believe my case was unusual, but Danny didn't live up to his reputation. I took my pickup in for a new alternator, a pretty straightforward job. When I picked it up nearly two weeks later, Danny said "You need a new radiator" and showed me a broken piece from the fitting where the radiator hose attaches. The truck is old, and I didn't think much of it until I got home and realized there was no need for him to mess with the radiator: the shop manual says the alternator should be removed by taking off the right-side fender well. That's unusual--if I'd done the work myself, my first thought would have been to pull the radiator, too--but because nobody took the time to check, my radiator will have to be replaced. Additionally, whoever did the work snap the fasteners that hold the fan shroud and didn't bother to replace them. When I looked under the hood, the shroud was held on only by gravity and a single hose. I can sort of forgive the radiator, because I might have made the same mistake, but not taking responsibility for the breakage and then not securing the fan shroud is just bad business and sloppy work. Way late update, 8/21/19: the low-buck alternator Danny installed lasted less than 1000 miles. I parked the truck after my last update and, since I use it only occasionally, didn't get around to fixing it until recently. After replacing the radiator, I drove it a few hundred miles before the battery light came on. Because I was hauling a load of building materials I didn't want to abandon, I pulled into a Reno shop for diagnosis. The mechanic said a "really cheap aftermarket alternator" had failed. He installed a good one, about $400 worth. I could ignore any one of these things. Stuff happens sometimes. All of them together is just too much. read more

I'm not sure what to do now, I had brakes done all the way around in September to the tune of $480, two days later they were grinding. I took my car back and was assured all was good by Danny. The grinding while intermittent, is more frequent, and much worse. I have been trying to reach the garage for the last 3 weeks and only get voice mail which states "this mail box is full". I guess I need to contact the BBB, and the Atty General to get this resolved. Update, he did take care of the problem, he replaced the pads and re-turned the rotors. read more

My alternator went out on Friday, august 4, 2012. It was closing time at franks automotive. Saturday morning I got up early and using my tools, I removed the alternator from my 1991 ford aerostar. When Danny ordered the alternator from o'reilly auto parts in reno, Nevada. Phone 1-775-787-3634, invoice #232637, part # 01-3631, retail price $99.99. Danny at franks automotive charged me 60% over retail $158.69 for the alternator. I breathe with a cpap machine at night. Danny told me the extra charge was for electricity. Ten cents worth of electricity. I am a decorated viet nam veteran, 66 years old and dieing from a bullet lodged in my brain while serving with the U S Army, 101st Airborne in Viet Nam. If you are a Senior Citizen or a veteran, beware of dealing with the rip offs at franks automotive. read more

Shout out to Chris and Frank's Automotive for their fantastic service. I had just arrived at the resort for ski patrol duties on Saturday morning when I noticed a pool of coolant under my SUV. Once I was finally able to secure a tow several hours later, a coworker suggested I see if Chris could help. Long story short, I had a new radiator installed and I was back on the road to the Bay Area by late Saturday afternoon. I took my car to Franks in April 2018 to get my timing belt replaced - not a cheap job... but necessary. It is now February 2019 less than a year later and I am having to get it replaced AGAIN. Luckily, the mechanics I brought my car to pondered the issues at hand and encouraged me to allow them to look into it being the timing belt even though I was very hesitant having JUST gotten it replaced. After disassembling my car they found that the timing belt was damaged and necessary tensioners were not replaced. A VERY NEGLECTFUL JOB THAT COULD HAVE LEFT ME WITH A SCRAP CAR. I called Franks this AM to get information from them, Chris, was super friendly and said he would be more than happy to give the mechanics a call to discuss the issue at hand.... he never did. It is clear to me now why he didn't follow through. I would NEVER recommend Franks Automotive to anyone. They are neglectful and dishonest. These guys are the best. I was stranded at a nearby gas station (20+ miles from my home) after my car broke down and the normal trouble-shooting options didn't work. I was worried I'd need to pay for a long distance tow, but found Franks online, and decided to risk using a new mechanic. Stopped by after hours to make sure the place existed - before ordering the tow, and the guys were still onsite working. One offered to come back to the gas station with me - he tried out additional troubleshooting options, got the car started, drove me back to the shop, and we were able to get the starter replaced and I was out of there in just over an hour. They went above and beyond to support me, were willing to work on my car even though they were already officially closed, and had it done so quickly that I was able to drive to work the next morning. Based on the other review, I called Frank's the day of on a Saturday after trying every mechanic in Truckee/Tahoe City (save the 76s). Not only did Jose squeeze me in and stay later than he intended, he charged me 20% less than the estimate to flush my coolant system.
