5 Years Later...I can't believe I never posted this review! I am bummed that I didn't give Dr Kogen the recognition he deserved all those years ago. I have a beautiful, healthy 5 year old boy, who met Dr. Kogen when he was just 10 days old. I was referred to him by Nicole Foster of Birthfit Southbay for my son's circumcision. She used his services for her son and gave me some peace of mind regarding the process, and at that time, came to our home (not sure if he does that anymore). We called him, went over the process and immediately felt at ease. When he showed up, he went over the process again, and could tell we were a little nervous...what parent isn't! Found Dr. Kogen via Yelp and had a fantastic experience. tl;dr: book him. I called after finding him to learn more, and possibly schedule an appointment. We were debating between having our newborn's circumcision done by a pediatric urologist or someone else. It appears to be a shrinking industry, and many pediatricians or physicians or other doctors who used to perform the procedure no longer do, and pickings were slim. Dr. Kogen was in touch shortly thereafter, and spent a good ten minutes listening to our concerns, fielding our questions, and putting us at ease with the procedure. He shared enough reading material to answer nearly all our questions, including what to do after the surgery. We opted to have our son's circumcision done at our home, where he was nursed and then very lovingly (but firmly) held by his own parents, and the procedure was over in minutes. Dr. Kogen arrived on time and explained what we could expect to see before, during, and after the procedure. Every few days afterward, he'd call to follow up and field any questions we had, most of which rose from us forgetting or missing a detail he'd gone over, and he was very patient in explaining it to us yet again. We could've driven 60 miles each way to a pediatric urologist, had our son tied to a board away from his parents, but instead, we had the procedure done in the comfort of our own home. read more

The quick summation: We had a well-baby exam for my son at 3 weeks, just a couple of days after the aftercare routine was over. The pediatrician took off our son's diaper and exclaimed, "Wow! That's the best circumcision I've seen in a long time!" That, along with how our friends are still talking about how special the bris was, is why Dr. Kogen truly is the best in the game and why you should trust your son to his very capable hands. The longer story: A bris is both a religious rite and a medical procedure. My husband, who is not Jewish, and I had lots of conversations about it. It was important to my husband that he was included despite not being Jewish. My husband wanted our children to follow in my faith, but does not want to convert himself. Meanwhile, I always dreamed of the day that my son enter the covenant of the Jewish people, but the circumcision part gave me pause. There is so much misinformation on the internet and every "crunchy" pregnancy FB group, but after doing extensive research on the most current studies, I felt confident that it was the right choice for our family. Neither of us took this lightly and it was important to both of us that we chose someone who we could trust. We asked our rabbi for recommendations for mohels. Dr. Kogen was the first person I called and I felt so confident in his abilities and so comfortable while talking to him that I knew I had found our guy. I especially liked how open he was in including my husband and his family into the ceremony despite them being Catholic. When I was talking to my aunt about choosing a mohel, she said, "We really wanted a certain mohel for [my now 24-year-old cousin], but he was booked but we got him for [my now 22-year-old cousin]. He was a rockstar back in the day--Dr. Kogen." I swear I could hear her mouth hit the floor when I said that was the person we were going with! She said, "Then you're getting the best." Our baby was born on a Friday morning, but by the time I realized I should call to book Dr. Kogen it was already shabbos. I waited until Sunday and fortunately he was still available. He sent us clear instructions for how to set everything up and emails with photo examples. He was really good about communicating with us leading up to the bris. He had ideas on what to include that we wouldn't have immediately thought of on our own like including an heirloom tallis (my great-grandfathers) and photos of who our son was being named after to be placed on the table. My husband and I were a bit tense the morning of the bris. Yet, as soon as Dr. Kogen came in, we felt so much better. It was clear he knew exactly what to do and our only job was to follow his lead. He took the time to talk to us away from everyone else to reassure us and answer any questions we had. He then went over aftercare instructions (which are also available on the website). Finally, it was time for the ceremony. Over half of the people there had never attended a bris before. Dr. Kogen made sure to explain each part of the ceremony with a mix of humor and deep knowledge. As one of our friends commented later, "He was entertaining without being a clown. You don't want a clown to circumcise your son." Dr. Kogen had people laughing while also gaining everyone's trust. When the "main event" came, Dr. Kogen really showed his colors. He was firm but kind as he instructed us how to hold our son. He was efficient without being rushed. Just before the actual circumcision, he turned to my husband and then me, saying "Thank you for trusting me to do this." It was so genuine. Despite doing this literally thousands of times, it was evident he did not take his task lightly. That reverence for his role in our son's young life just once again showed why he is the best. I can not recommend Dr. Kogen enough! I reached out to him based on a recommendation and just got a great vibe from him so I asked him to perform my son's circumcision. Dr. Kogen arrived early and with the items he asked to have ready, created a beautiful set up for the ceremony. We kept ours small to close family and friends but Dr. Kogen conducted the ceremony as if there were hundreds of people there. It was full of heartwarming moments as well as jokes and laughter. Our guests were so impressed!! As for his skill, we had doctors compliment our son on how great everything looked and how well the circumcision was done. Dr. Kogen was recommended from friends of ours that have used his services in the past. We were looking for someone that was medically trained and educated in performing a circumcision for our son. We are firm believers that having our son separated from us and strapped down to a table in the hospital the first 1-2 days of his life in the hospital.... just wasn't our style. I couldn't be happier with the work Dr. Kogen did circumcising our baby boy. I wasn't watching the clock, but I swear the procedure flew by in less than a minute, and almost at once my baby was calm and content in my arms again. The rest of the afternoon my son napped peacefully, fed normally, and behaved like it was any other day in his barely-one-week-old life. He's healing up right and proper, and as for my husband and I, we're so relieved that we opted out of hospital circumcision and hired someone with the experience and skilled hands to treat our little angel as gently as possible. We could not have been happier with Dr. Kogan. I'm one of those moms who was very hesitant about circumcising in the first place, even though I know it's part of Jewish tradition. I just couldn't imagine having surgery on my newborn--He's so perfect as he is! But Dr. Kogan really put our minds at ease. He worked with my family to make sure that we had everything we needed, and was very flexible with our schedule. He also added unexpected levity to the day, which I personally really needed. We sincerely appreciated that he made everyone feel welcome, and part of the ceremony... Even (or maybe especially) the non-Jews. The ceremony itself was lovely. He explained in detail what was going on, the significance, and made sure everyone understood what the day was about. He even brought readings, which was very much appreciated as parents of newborns have very little time to find poetic things to say at their son's bris. We had a very small ceremony, and he invited each attendee to bestow some wishes on our little one. It was such a special part of the day. Afterward, he gave us some great suggestions for restaurants and activities in our new neighborhood (we just moved last month) while we enjoyed a little nosh and baby slept peacefully. Dr. Kogan's website is also extremely helpful. We used it to help set up, and to refresh our memories on aftercare. One addition I would make to his care advice: get at least 4 tubes of Vaseline total and 10 gauze pads for every day of healing. So you need about 100... I have used Dr Kogen, not once but twice. He was able to work with us twice for the Bris Mila of both of our sons. He works with an interfaith crowd (as my wife is Jewish and I am not, so we had a non-Jewish crowd). As I got a little wobbly on my feet the first time his levity made it easier.
