Every corner had a nod to rhythm and history--vinyl records in the sidewalk, chimes on the bridge, even the playground looked like it was mid-song. It's more than a park--it's a tribute to community and culture, loud and proud. A little scruffy in spots, sure, but full of soul.

After strolling with man's best friend for a lap or two, you can seat yourself in a few restaurants that are from walking distance at Jefferson Park. There are Meet Ups here for dog lovers and Nick and I chuckled at the idea that if you don't have a canine companion, you're not going to fit in. Just kidding! No seriously, every block there seems to be paws crossing the paths with other fur kid paws and dog moms/dads! This area surrounded with lots of young millennials and their pawsionate fur-babies. Jefferson Park is a neighborhood and public park that overlooks Downtown Denver, Colorado from its perch across Interstate 25. It is located in the area that is called North Denver! the City of Highlands was annexed, and thereafter was known as "North Denver."

You'll also spot an army of dogs out for their morning walk, and atop the hill sits a cool playground that must get busy in the afternoons. Jefferson also offers plenty of picnic / grilling areas, and benches - some way out in the lawn so you can sit in the shade and enjoy the view.

Beginning a city here proved to be a poor choice as the waterways were prone to periodic flooding. The City shifted to the northeast and this area was ignored and filled up with heavy industrial users. A huge flood in 1965 destroyed much of that infrastructure and provided an opportunity for redevelopment. The Greenway Foundation was a prime mover in the 1970s to create a park highlighting this area. A major update in the 1990s focused on floodplain management and further enhanced the park as a hub for the regional trail system. Today this is a highlight of Lower Downtown. Shoemaker Plaza begins at the REI building and extends down to the north edge of the South Platte River. The main park area begins at the south edge of the River and covers both sides of Cherry Creek. The trail system runs through this and continues north, south, and east. This is a beautiful space and exists in its own world, apart from the bustle of Lower Downtown. It is well worth a visit.

There is both a paved and gravel path around the outside perimeter and a large grassed open space inside. There are 4 walk-in entrances on the west side and 3 entrances on the east side. No parking inside. A part of the former loop road which closed in 2020 is open to cars on 12th Ave. No car access from 8th or 13th Ave. Plenty of porta-potties including handicap accessible. No other services. I walked around the park from the southwest corner in 35 minutes, about 3500 steps.There is a marble pavilion on the east erected in 1907 with rose gardens on both north & south sides and 3 fountains fscing west when Spring returns. I had difficulty in finding street parking on the west side. During my walk, I saw plenty of spots to park on the east side.

In the summer, kids are running through splash pads and people lounge with iced coffees like it's their personal terrace. Winter? There's an ice rink and a cozy little vibe that makes downtown feel like a Hallmark movie. It's not huge, but it packs in charm--ping pong tables, food trucks, random art, and the kind of people-watching you only get in a place that never really quiets down. It's one of those spots you don't plan on staying long in... but somehow, you do.

The security are always happy to greet people that are visiting (when they are doing there rounds), the restrooms are always clean whenever they are open, and even on hot days, they provide ice cold water. There isn't a parking lot so street parking around the park will have to do. It's easily accessible off Federal. Major bummer is their sprinkler system. When you plan a potluck with friends for a Saturday morning and you're in the middle of setting up soccer and volleyball nets it's not fun when the sprinklers go off in your face. Yes, I know from experience. All that aside, it's an easy peezy park to bring your kids to play in the playground area. I don't have kids yet but I've been known to make my pal's kiddos fly on the swings there and it's a grand time.

Starting off my review of Hirshorn Park, I would like to say for the umpteenth time, "When I review…read moresmall parks, they are rated in the category of small neighborhood and community parks." In this category I look at safety, the scale of graffiti and vandalism with the condition of the park. I also look at amenities. I review them in a different perspective than regional parks or urban spaces such as Commons Park, Skyline Park, and Civic Center Park. I have said this quite a few times in my Southern Nevada park reviews; however now after crossing over the Rocky Mountains into Colorado, this is my first time saying this in Denver.     Hirshorn is the quintessential neighborhood park in a major city (in 2020 the population for Denver was 715,522). It is in the very spot where the tourists (my brother and I) are leaving downtown for the local Highlands community. It is at the north westernmost point of 16th Street on the crest of the hill where it changes into Tejon Street.    My brother and I love walking. We had that opportunity when we flew into Denver hours before my dad arrived. This gave us the opportunity to partake in an extended walk from 15th at Welton Streets by the Convention Center, all the way south along the 16th Street corridor which included three bridges and Commons Park. When we reached the curve on the crest of the hill overlooking downtown Denver, where 16th Street changes into Tojan Street, Hirshorn Park made the perfect spot to turn around.    Our experience was one of where my brother and I were the few tourists that shared a community space with the majority who were  local Denverites. Walking into the park from Tojan Street I saw parents sharing time with their children in the state of the art playground that includes spring cars and see-saws. When we walked deeper into the park by the basketball court and baseball diamond, we saw pet parents sharing time on the walkway and open grass with their fur babies. It was close to the baseball diamond where there is the ammenity of a "view plane. In urban planning terminology, a " view plane" is a spot that provides a protected unobstructed view of a skyline, mountain range, or scenic landmark. Situated on a hill, this park offers a "view plane" protection by the baseball diamond. From this spot, there is an unobstructed view towards downtown. My brother and I would soon spend time in a similar view when we walked back down the 16th Street hill towards downtown.     On the afternoon of Saturday, June 25, 2022, the park seemed to be safe. I spotted zero instances of graffiti and vandalism. This gave me the perception that the community cares about their park and that we were in a safe environment. My one complaint was that the grass had a plentitude of brown spots. In my opinion golf course green grass would have added to the park scenery.     As a local park designed for locals instead of tourists like your's truly, I rate Hirshorn Park four stars. From the perspective of a tourist walking from the Convention Center or Civic Center Park to the northwestern-most reaches at the end of 16th Street, these four stars are represented in a park that serves as a serene spot to relax while turning around to walk back towards the downtown skyline below.
