Built in Tudor Revival Style, it provided for two living units, one on each side of the archway. The Gatehouse resembled a Swiss chalet and became a trademark of the Sheppard. The neighborhood children viewed it as the home of Hansel and Gretel. A tenant alwavs lived in the Gatehouse until 2005. The beautiful Rhododendron Drive was historically entered by driving through the Gatehouse. In 2002 the entire Charles Street entrance was reconstructed and cars no longer entered through the Archway.

I think the feel of the place is supposed to be spooky, unfortunately, I picked a spring break day to do it and there were enough teenagers running around here like savages (just kidding, they were all really sweet) it doesn't really have a scary feel to it at all. To explain the ruins, it was Roman Catholic school in Ilchester, Maryland. The ruins are near Ilchester and Bonnie Branch roads (so the Yelp location is pretty straight on). It was called hell house in the 70s after it was abandoned and vandalized and rumors have it a strange cult started living there. It also had an over zealous caretaker who had a gun and some dogs and would assault vandals. He was displaced after the school was set ablaze by arsonists. Hell House altar structure that most people take pictures of is at the top of a very steep hill, about a mile in. It used to have a large metal cross, and it is a very unique place for a photoshoot. For easy access, park in the lot for patapsco state park (right past the train tracks) where the trailhead is and start coming up to the left of the train tracks.

It reads: On this site, Isaac Charles and Nathan Walker erected a large white oak log house named for their ancestral stronghold in Scotland which the three brothers had fled after the failure of attempts to unseat George I, King of England, as ruler of Scotland. Isaac permanently settled here and obtained land grants for 188 acres. He and his three sons served in the Revolutionary War. The graves of Isaac and his son Nathan are north of here. Taoping Castle was the birthplace of Samuel Hamilton Walker (February 24, 1817 - October 9, 1847). Lt. Colonel of the Texas Rangers and Captain of the US Cavalry, he left home at age 19 to fight Indians and later became a leader and hero of the Rangers. His suggested changes to Samuel Colt's revolver resulted in Colt's success as an arms manufacturer. 1000 Colt-Walker pistols - the first, heaviest and longest revolvers ever issued to American forces - were purchased for the Texas Rangers during the Mexican war. Walker was killed in that war at the Battle of Hua Mantla, Mexico. The family cemetery is all that remains of the Taoping Castle estate.

The visitor center has a small exhibit and an introductory film which is nice but the guide prefaces by saying it "focuses too much on John Dickinson" (?) The exhibit focuses more on the family and the enslaved/servants who lived there, which really rounded out the property, but we did come here because we wanted to learn more about John Dickinson. No gift shop, which was disappointing. The tour itself was very informative, and there was a big crowd visiting when I did. Again, the tour seemed to want to downplay Dickinson and his role in the American Revolution. Likely because he thought the colonies weren't prepared to go to war, he abstained from voting for independence, he is less remembered than other Founding Fathers, but I came to learn about him, and the guide wasn't all that interested in talking about him and what he did accomplish. Still, the furnishings were nice, and we got to learn about Dickinson's father, his wife and family, and his brother who all lived there with a focus on the lesser-known residents. I think that could have all been balanced better. The view of the river is lovely, and there are some out buildings and a garden to stroll through. It's a nice outdoor site, and for free, it's still a good site to visit to see history being preserved.

The…read morehouse was interesting to see, and there were a few pieces of furniture that I loved- such as the rope beds, the chair that was oversized, the large loom, and the travel clock that one of the Dickinsons took with him when he traveled. The guide was nice and interesting. That is saying a lot, because I can get bored very easily. She spent an adequate amount of time in each room. Before we took the tour, we had to see a movie, that was about 15 minutes long, mostly about history. We were the only people there, and I got up during the movie and looked at the other exhibits in the room. I would say travel here if you like history or old houses/furniture.

The tours were free, but it wasn't crowded and we basically interrupted the guide's phone call. She did give us a personalized one-on-one tour after debating if she should wait to start the tour on the hour and said she'd be mad if someone else came in. She did give off a vibe like we were interrupting her sitting around time. Despite that, she was very knowledgeable on the history of the building, and it was nice to be able to look around with someone and ask them questions. The inside really seemed a lot like Independence Hall in Philadelphia. It's amazing the small, perfunctory building was in use until like 1933. There was a really nice painting of George Washington in one of the rooms and good information on early delegates. If you are in the area, it's a free stop and there's free parking, and there's good information and not too long to see. It was worth visiting. No gift shop though.

I posted a picture of the marble stairs on the outside. There was a volunteer finishing up with some people who liked history, and they said he was very knowledgeable. I was mainly there just to see the building. I would recommend if you are interested in Delaware politics and history go here.

This monument features waterman in a typical skiff. The monument is dedicated to all Maryland Waterman who not only fill our bellies but also support the economy and contribute to our rich seafood culture. The best way to find this monument is by following directions to the Fisherman's Inn. The monument is out front sitting on Route 18, Main Street.

John Paul Jones is credited with being the "Father of the United States Navy" in 1775. His crypt…read morelies on the grounds of the Annapolis Naval Academy. You can enter the grounds free of charge after clearing a security check-point. He is credited with with having uttered the phrase "I have not yet begun to fight" in response to a quest for his surrender at the Battle of Flamborough Head during the Revolutionary War. His burial on the grounds of the U.S. Navel Academy is a complicated matter. Upon his death in 1792 he was interred in the French royal family private cemetery having gained the respect of the family while residing in France at the time. Only two years later in 1796 France's Revolutionary government sold the property and his burial on that land was forgotten. It was not until 1906 that his body was brought back to the United States and the U.S. Navel Academy under the direction of Theodore Roosevelt. The crypt has a separate entrance below the chapel of the United States Navel Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The ornate sarcophagus is covered in sculpted barnacles and is supported by legs in the shape of stylized dolphins. The sarcophagus is made of black and white marble. There is a bust of John Paul Jones and various other artifacts in this subterranean rotunda. The crypt is well done and worth seeing.

Well, he was one of the big leaders in the civil rights era and he was a native of Baltimore. In 1967, he was the first African American to be appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States. The statue here was erected here on the 40th anniversary of the historic Brown vs Board of Education decision. The Supreme Court actually quoted from Marshall's argument before the Maryland Court. The words behind the Justice are "Equal Justice Under Law". As I've said in some of my Historic Marker reviews, it's important to remember where we came from.

This outdoor memorial dedicated to Thurgood Marshall is located at Lawyer's Mall across from the…read morepublic entrance to the Maryland State House. Marshall was a native of Baltimore, earned his law degree from Howard University in DC, and then returned to Baltimore to work with the NAACP there. In 1935, he successfully argued for the admission of Donald Murray to the University of Maryland School of Law. He also argued several landmark cases before the U.S. Supreme Court: Brown v. Board of Education, Shelley v. Kraemer, and many more. He also of course was the first Black Supreme Court Justice, serving from 1967-1991. The location of the memorial is almost where the Maryland Court of Appeals stood in 1935, when Marshall argued the Murray case. The memorial was designed by a Maryland artist (Toby Mendez) and includes an 8-foot statue of Marshall as a young lawyer. Behind him are pillars with the inscription "Equal Justice Under Law," and before him are two benches. On one of the benches sits a statue of Donald Murray, and on the other bench sit the figures of two children representing who Marshall was fighting for when arguing Brown v. Board of Education. There is also a circle in the center of the square that contains text explaining some of the above context about the memorial. This memorial is great and well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Beautiful but scary bridge! Went on it for the first time to get to Ocean City. Felt super long on…read morethe way there, I'm scared of heights. The way back was much better and close to sunset so a beautiful view. I took my time as people drove past me, so don't be afraid to take your time or put your hazards on if you need to. Stay on the right lane and don't look down is the advice my coworker gave me and she was right :). On the way back there were 3 lanes open so I took the middle lane. Grateful for this bridge and the access it provides!

It's a major transportation route, known for its impressive engineering and scenic views. The bridge is also a tourist attraction, offering unique perspectives of the bay. It takes about 20 mins to cross. Be careful when it's windy as that can cause some heavy steering work. All in all as I say with all my bridge reviews, it did its job which is to get me from one side to the other safely!! It did that so I can't ask for me!

I am a voracious reader and ardent fan of documentaries, PBS, quality movies. It was very difficult to tilt my head to view sideways book titles. Eureka...on line book/movie ordering. It always amazes me how surprised so many are when I share this remarkable amenity and that newly released movies are available too. I do not drive; go with next door neighbors to church where I am accommodated to dash in the library and drop off/pick up books. There is nothing like a small town library to make you feel honored! Richard Smith, was manager when I first came in. Recently special showcase honors go to Amanda, Patty, Jane who went above and beyond to assist me. Going there to pick up books are highlight of the week when in a very few minutes: smiles and pleasantries are exchanged coupled with what every reader loves to do: recommend a favorite. This time, it was Memoirs. I write. I had special research needs...kudos to Amanda for going above and beyond in assistance with 10+ professional services. Price Community Center

9/14/19 It's been several years since I have been to a…read morewedding. Today; however, I attended my step-sister and brother in-law's wedding. The wedding and wedding reception were held in The Price Community Center in Easton Maryland. The wedding was supposed to start at 14:00 (2:00pm), but didn't start till about 2:17pm when the maiden of Honor entered the main hall followed by the bride. I sat there looking around and thinking about how I use to see everyone dressed up looking nice at a wedding. Today; however, it was a casual wedding and suit and tie were very few. When I was going to the The Gow School, the Male students at the time wore jacket and tie 80 percent of the time. Its probably why I don't dress up as much now a days. Anyhow, Karen appeared looking nothing like the Karen I saw many years ago at my own wedding. For those who have been married, the may have a better understanding on what could be going through the minds the bride and groom. As the wedding ceremony started, the wedding vows were said as the bride put the ring on her husband's finger...oh, did I say that wrong?...Mmm no I didn't. Things were done a little differently, but it was very nice to see. Not long after the wedding ceremony started, it was over the boyfriend girlfriend status had changed to Esposo y Esposa (Husband and Wife). The wedding reception soon started up and food tasted really good despite some of the food having added salt in it. I forget the name of the catering service, but the name will be in one of the photos I took. When people had eaten and drunk enough, the dancing soon began. Rock Me Mama Like A Wagon Wheel, Wobble Baby Wobble and one other song were fun songs to watch people dance to. The song called Wobble by V.I.C was old school dance I had forgotten the dance steps to, but t ok at us okay, because the ladies in the video forgot the steps too. After the slow dancing to country dance songs, more bridal photos took place. People lined up for single and group shots with the bride. During one of the group shots, a spider wanted to get in on the action and would have landed on the bride or the maid of honor. I decided screams of fear might not be a good thing for a wedding. The spider was upset with me. The Price Community Center isn't a very big place, but it certainly had enough room for this wedding. I am glad we went to this wedding because I wouldn't have known what I would be missing if we did not go. One of the things that stood out for me, is the bride's new tattoo shoulder/arm which showed clearly from her wedding dress. Karen is now the first bride j have ever seen showing off her tattoo. It was after the bride, that I started noticing most of the guests at the wedding had tattoos as well. I wonder when my wife might get one? Seeing the mixed interracial couples at the wedding was nice to see too. The interior design for the wedding were set to the colors of the Dallas Cowboys even though Karen the bride calls herself a Pittsburgh Steelers fan...I don't know, did she change teams? Finally the cutting of the cake came. The cake was made of blue frosting and the bride and groom were the only two people I saw eat it. The spilling of the cake on themselves marks a whole new world of adventures into marriage world. After the cake/cupcakes a final slow dance took place 30 minutes later. The wedding was beautifully put together. I am glad they picked The Price Community Center for their wedding. I look forwards to seeing the photos of what others came up for their wedding. Great times here.
