(this is a very late post from our visit in summer of 2022)…read more What a gem of a museum that we happened upon during our recent visit to the Millsville, NJ area! We love finding local museums and this one did not disappoint. We were given a short introduction of the museum by a nice lady, then we walked around all of the rooms at our own pace. Every room is PACKED with so much history, and each exhibit and display is well-organized. Afterwards I learned that it actually IS more than 1 museum! We loved all the different displays. The museum really takes the time to pay tribute to so many groups that have served in the military, including Japanese Americans, Tuskegee Airmen, Women in the military, all across multiple wars. You could easily spend a whole day here just absorbing all of the history and artifacts. The collection is just spectacular! While we were there we were given an impromptu tour by Mr. Ed, a volunteer and Vietnam Veteran. (Tours can be scheduled in advance but we didn't schedule one, we were just lucky enough to chance upon one). What an honor and pleasure to be in his presence as he let my 2 boys into the display vehicles and explain (very patiently) all of the features and functions of each. He spent lots of time telling us about the history of the vehicles and in particular we spent a good amount of time in the flight training center. I can't say enough about this great museum. The restoration efforts are fantastic and you can see the passion and care that the employees put into maintaining and, even more importantly, IMPROVING this place. Also to note, restrooms are available and clean, as is water. Located right on the Executive Airport, so you can also catch small planes coming and going. Gift shop is small but reasonably priced. Truly a great place to visit and we would definitely come back, especially when they have their air shows and other events! Probably wouldn't recommend for under 5 years unless you just want to see some airplanes outside. We became members and receive occasional mailings with updates. They have since acquired some new vehicles and we look forward to making another visit in the future!

The display was absolutely wonderful and everything else in the museum was of exceptional quality! The staff was very knowledgeable and detailed in explaining the aspects of the historical pieces. Nice and simple, Depression-era constructed state capitol. Delaware is "The First State" to ratify…read morethe Constitution, but their Legislative Hall is one of the 5 newest state capitols. It was completed in 1933 with wings added in 1970 and 1994. Entrance, guided tours and parking are free (visit webpage: Planning a visit: Delaware General Assembly). Our guide gave a very informative 30-minute tour of the Delaware House of Representatives and Senate chambers. One tidbit of info from the tour: the majority party gets seats closest to the windows. It might be for the better view, better temperature or something totally different. There are series of 10 "Bicentennial Murals" painted by Delaware artist Jack Lewis that span the two chambers. They commemorate the 200th anniversary of Delaware signing the United States Constitution on 12/7/1787. Above the State Senate dais are 3 murals: The Dickinson Plantation (framer of the Constitution); Ratification on the Delaware Constitution; and Caesar Rodney's Ride. Above the State House of Reps dais are 3 murals: Landing of the Swedes (1638); George Washington at New Castle (wedding, 1784), and Old Swedes Church in Wilmington.

Legislative Hall is the official capitol of the state of Delaware. This building houses the…read morechambers and offices of the Delaware General Assembly and was built between 1931 and 1933. Additional wings were added to the building in 1965-1970 and 1994. The building is a Colonial Revival style and is quite similar to the Old Colony House in Newport RI. It is opposite the Old State House on the mall. The original capitol of Delaware was the State House (now known as the Old State House) and is located nearby on The Green. It was originally the Kent County Court House, which shared the building with the state government until 1873 when the Kent County Government relocated. Inside Legislative Hall is the Hall of Governors, which includes portraits of all of Delaware's past governors. There are also a number of other political and military portraits. If you're going to be officially visiting State Capitols as I am, then this is the correct building. This was my 35th on the way to all 50! [Review 11538 overall, 1318 of 2019.]

This is a "house with a tower" style lighthouse rather than the usual conical tower you'd see at many others. It is open for tours but I was here early on Sunday morning and the staff was not here yet. Built in 1849 and only 40 feet high, it has undergone extensive renovations recently but it very endangered by erosion. The city and county and state have installed sandbags and such to try to keep as much of the land as possible but I don't know that it's working. Keep it up, y'all. The last bit of the road to East Point is sand and the area around the lighthouse was pretty dense with sand fleas and other tiny bugs. I did not spend too much time here today. I wish we'd had enough time and energy for a full day visit, so we could properly convey all that…read morethe Arboretum has to offer, but we were limited to a half day following the "Flight to Freedom" walk while we followed both Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass' historical paths, a joint program of the arboretum and local historians to try to sort of simulate the outdoor challenges of escaping enslaved persons. As such, and in early spring, our appreciation was limited to one trail and the amenities around the visitor center, but our appreciation and admiration for the Adkins for even this bare introduction to the extensive grounds is nevertheless deep just from the one visit and left us eager to return on another day to explore the rest of the trails. The front desk person was lovely and kind, and oriented us after we explained why we were there. (The admission price here is tiny; I recommend donating a little extra on top of it. It's a great bargain either way.) They have these old-school mini-walkmen-style audio guides that were helpful but which badly need to be updated to the 3rd decade of the 21st century. They're hard to navigate and harder to hear. Having a borrowed audio guide feels like something from the 1950s; why not just make it available on cell phone, with the text available online or via an app? That was the one clumsy part of the Flight to Freedom path-- only one person at a time could listen to the very low volume on the headphones. While we speculate perhaps they thought this approach would preserve the quiet for other visitors, perhaps a simple imprecation to keep volume low on cell phones would suffice...? I can't think of a good reason not to make the jump to current museum practice. (That plus it's not very disability-friendly if you're hearing impaired or have fine motor problems.) When we could hear it, the audio guide was excellent, including the "bonus" tracks of first person escapee narratives. The content only needs a better delivery mechanism. The arboretum itself was quite alive -- we saw a heron in the woods, ID'd about 20 different species of birds in total either by sight or with Merlin, ran across a blooming hawthorne that was simply riotous with honeybees merrily sucking nectar out, and enjoyed the early blooms. It was a fun time, where one can see through the underbrush but also see the buds and early leaves and many blossoms out. There were also some programs for young children going on, and it's very gratifying to see the place alive with visitors. The little gift shop is fun, and while there's no café (one can understand why) it would be very tempting to bring a picnic, which I suspect (but do not know) is frowned upon. The inviting water feature out front with the signature chairs was a nice place to stop and rest, while we listened to the frogs croaking and somehow avoided early season insect pests.

Went with the family during Family Fun Day. DSP really does an amazing job displaying the history…read moreand legacy of their outfit. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful! Our kids had a great time and learned a lot about the history of the DSP while having some fun and getting their faces painted. Makes you appreciate the sacrifices that the men and women of the state police make to protect the citizens. I would definitely recommend visiting with the family. We will absolutely be back again!

Really clean museum that is dedicated to the history of the Delaware State Police. It's open during…read morethe week, but only open the 3rd Saturday of every month during the weekend. We were greeted by a really nice retired police officer that gave us the history of the museum. The music is free to visit, but they do take donations to help cover operating costs. There are several cars and even some motorcycles. You are allowed to enter and play in the Crown Victoria. My son had a blast turning on the sirens and taking his daddy for a "ride". There was even a trooper hat he got to wear while he was "driving". There are lots of history pieces including the old kits they used for taking fingerprints. It's a pretty decent size and in good shape. Definitely worth a visit either with or without the kids.

The staff is very helpful, supportive, and upbeat. We did a self-tour and felt very comfortable. Easy parking for private front or back parking and easy entrance. I found it best to alert archive staff in advance especially when you are in need of some older records.

I figured I would start with the Delaware Public Archives for my first review. My family is from…read moreDelaware and I am highly interested in Genealogy so I have spent many days pouring over property records, tax assessments, and other miscellaneous documents at the Archives. The building is beautiful and well maintained, it includes the older Hall of Records building as well as the much larger newer section that was build about 10 years ago. The research room is also clean, well lit, and very quiet, making it an ideal place to research. The staff have always been very helpful and eager to assist me with my research. They are all very knowledgeable archival professionals who clearly know Delaware and the Archives holdings. They also have great public programs every first Saturday of the month on topics ranging from Genealogy to the Beatles (believe it or not). They open up the behind the scenes areas of the Archives every once in awhile for tours. I have been through the vaults and processing rooms on a tour and it was great. They even show you the original William Penn charter document for 1682 as well as Delaware's ratification document! I highly recommend checking out the Archives if you need to do Delaware related research or if you are just stopping through Dover to see the capitol or Air Force base. I now live in Connecticut but whenever I'm in the area I usually go in to continue my ongoing geneaological research.

I love the smallness, the personal nature of books being inside an actual home, and yes, despite…read moretight corners, close quarters, and very packed space - I wonder, if a new library is indeed moved into, will it lose the personal, historical, home welcoming you feel when you go into Smyrna public library? There are so few public libraries that feel as if you walked into a comfortable bookstore or your own home, and I hope that occurs when a new location is designated. This is a place you want to just be able to hang out and watch the comings and going all day. it was so - not sure the word, but seeing people coming in, grabbing a nearby chair that would be in a living room, and take time to go through the newspaper of book of interest nearby. The residents must LOVE this public library, as I did from several towns away!
