I probably visit this place once to twice a month. It's delicious. I would strongly suggest the cheesecake- they have multiple layers and are absolutely delicious. My husband always gets cupcakes or cookies- and he enjoys them too. It's more expensive than cooking it at home- but I can tell you I'm not spending the time making real cheesecake, so that's kinda a moot point. I had a Boston cream cupcake from Fredericks pastries, and I really went for it because it was pretty intriguing. I mean who wouldn't look at the name, Boston cream cupcake and choose it out of your typical slate of desserts? Overall, I think that it was a good cupcake. A tad bit dry with a little less filling that I would hope mainly at the top and not in the middle. I'll be at. I am not a baker in any sense, so I'm not sure if there's a feasibility to put more cream in the middle, but if there would be, I would've highly recommended, including more of that iconic Boston cream pie filling in the middle of this cupcake. I think that would really help with the moisture aspect of this as well. Overall, it's a fun try, and I would recommend given it a shot! read more

The cake was very expensive but it was dry even with the raspberry filling. I don't mind spending the money but it certainly wasn't worth it!! We have been purchasing cakes here for years. The quality has definitely slipped significantly since the daughter took over from her father. We ordered two cakes in the past month. As there were issues with the first one, I went inside to place the order for the most recent one to ensure that it was made how we wanted it. It was not. In addition, the cake the most recent time was exceptionally dry. When my husband went to speak to the owner/manager he was completely brushed off. He was asked when we ate the cake...less than 24 hours after it was picked up. He was told that the longer you leave it, the drier the cake gets. It was dry when we first cut into it less than 24 hours later. It was so bad that several of us refused to eat any more of the cake. It should not be so dry to be inedible at the first cutting of the cake in the first 24 hours. We will not be back. read more

We saw this place listed as somewhere to go because it'd been featured on Phantom Gourmet. We saw it while waiting our turn at the range. We went afterwords and I ordered a bit of everything. A brownie. Multiple cheesecakes. Cupcakes. Cookies. Truffles. You name it we bought it. I had a great time chatting with the two women who were working. They were incredibly kind and we talked a bit about our pets. The baked goods were delicious. The purple velvet cupcake was good (albeit incredibly bright purple inside which was an experience), as was the brownie, chocolate covered strawberry and everything else we ordered. I just tried the chocolate cheesecake thing and it's delicious. We still have a funfetti one in the fridge for later. In all honesty I do not have a sweet tooth whatsoever so I'm not the best judge for cakes and such. To me, the buttercream frosting which is Frederick's signature is way too heavy. Again, not a sweets person, so to each their own. This review is based on a cake ordered for pickup on Christmas Eve. Prepaid and agreed on midday pickup. Upon arrival , the line was out the door and the system for service was for everyone to take a number. Got number 95 and they were on 40! Waited 10 minutes, saw there was minimal movement, then left. Came back more than 2 hours later, and they were on number 80. Wow. If I hadn't prepaid I would have walked like many others did. No way this makes sense. On a bitterly cold day, I found myself in need of some pastry comfort so I paid a visit to Frederick's in Bedford, and boy, did my day improve! Their staff is very polite and helpful. The open layout of the baking area allows you to see them at work, making fresh pastries and cakes. After living in Boston for a couple years, I hold all cannolis to the standards set forth by the Italian family-owned bakeries of the North End. Frederick's nails it: the crisp (not stale!) shell freshly stuffed with moist Ricotta cheese filling and dusted with powdered sugar. Their frosted fudge bar brownies are also amazing, and at Christmas time when I went, they were perfectly decorated with cute little snowmen! Just an added touch that shows how much love they put into their craft. My favorite item, though, is the Pecan Diamonds. Just amazing, absolutely amazing. I ordered a birthday cake for my mother's 50th and it came in the completely wrong colors (it was supposed to be pink/magenta/mint green and it came in fall colors: brown, orange, forest green). I didn't pick it up myself so I got it at the venue where it stuck out like a sore thumb. After following up about it, Anne was nice but offered me a $15 GIFT CARD for their mistake. If I spend $75 on a cake that isn't at all what I wanted, do you think I want a refund in the form of spending more money at your bakery? Just went in here, with a coupon deal sold by Bedford High School. While it's nice of them to offer a coupon for sale as a fundraiser, it would be nice if they actually had the items in their bakery. The coupon was for was Buy One Get One Free whoopie pies or whoopie cookies. Just our luck there were no whoopie cookies and ONE single kind of whoopie pies (regular old chocolate) and my husband is allergic to chocolate, so we were out of luck because we were told that's the only kind they make. Our wedding cake was fantastic. Not only did it look beautiful with a wave design frosting and fresh fall flowers, but it was delicious. So many wedding cakes are dry or tasteless but not the cake from Frederick's. Both the vanilla and chocolate sponge was moist and the raspberry filling and frosting were flavorful. The staff was amazing to work with, from the day we went for a tasting to our wedding day when it was delivered. Went into this bakery today to get a baby shower cake for March. I brought in a picture of the cake I wanted thinking how much easier can I make it for a bakery to make what I want. I was told they were unable to create the cake I specified due to their cakes being made in massive batches. My boyfriend went to do a wedding cake tasting at Frederick's with one of his goods friends and, knowing my love for cupcakes, brought one of theirs to me to try. Btw, he , his friend and the friend's fiancee LOVED the wedding cake from Frederick's. The cupcake he brought me was HUGE. IT was yellow vanilla cake with a big layer of whipped cream, fresh blueberries and fresh strawberries and a little "cake hat" on the top. It almost looked like a cupcake sandwich. Overall it was a tasty cupcake. The was soft and not too dry. It was refreshing to have whipped cream instead of frosting on the cupcake and the fresh fruit mixed in was a nice touch. Because I like stuff muddled into the batter of my cake (such as fruit, or curd or mousse, etc) I gave Frederick's 3 stars, but that's a personal preference on my part. By no means was this an un-tasty cupcake. It was yummy! From the little taste I had and what I heard about the cake, I say it's a yummy bakery. Definitely worth a visit! read more
