Not sure what everyone likes about Fred's. We got there at 7 :15pm for dinner, and the hostess sat us in the main room which was almost empty. The server was nice, but seemed to have other things to do.we ordered 2 drinks, which came quickly. We ordered appetizers. I had frog legs and my wife mozzarella sticks. They were ready in under ten minutes, and she brought my dinner salad (cole slaw is what they push) and my wife's mozzarella sticks were barely warm.. She then came back in just a couple minutes with our main meal, when we barely had a chance to start the appetizers! My grilled walleye was good, as well as my wife's scallops. The hush puppies were cold, dry, very hard, and bland. We then saw couple at the front get offered outdoor seating! We never knew it existed, and it was a beautiful nite. Had we known about it, we would have dined outdoors. They were sweeping all of the floors around us, and we decided to leave. I rarely give this bad of a review, but we were there barely 25 minutes from geting there to leaving. It felt way too rushed (last seating is 745pm and we felt like we inconvenienced the staff by showing up at 7:15pm on a slower nite. So much for southern hospitality. Very disappointing. read more

This restaurant was recommended highly by the locals, but wasn't as great as we'd hoped. My husband ordered a ribeye and it was mostly fat. I tried the walleye and it was seasoned and cooked well. Whenever I'm in town I make a point to get to Fred's. The catfish is always good and I appreciate the pickled tomatoes that go along with it. Service is consistently good and portions are what you'd expect in the South (read: lots of food and big gulp size plastic cups of sweat tea). It has been well over 5 or 6 years since we ate at Fred's fish house. My last meal there was only so-so. So, when my daughter suggest we eat there, I was reluctant at first, but she said it was under new management, so we went. Visiting mountain home from saint louis and asked yelp for advice on where to get some food. Could not have picked a better place on our first night here. The place was packed and it took us a little bit to get our drinks and to get ordered but we were not disappointed at all :) we sat on their outdoor patio around 7 pm and got an excellent view of lake Norfolk and the sun set making for a beautiful dinner backdrop. We went for the fresh Cajun seasoned catfish and decided to have the prime rib as well, and share. Our steak was cooked and seasoned perfectly and the cat fish was absolutely delicious. The Hush Puppies are to die for! The coleslaw was great with a mayo base and the portions were huge! Don't forget the ham and beans too! Our last night on vacation, we couldn't miss Fred's right? It was OK. The grilled walleye was done nicely, but overspiced...you want to taste a light fish like walleye, not the salt. The slaw and baked potato were fine of course, but the hush puppies were awful. We all took one bite and not another. They were like fried white bread, not a trace of cornbread and there was a lot of grease pooled in the middle. My husband had carrot cake for dessert, he liked that a lot. I had blackberry cobbler and it was good. The service was very good...they put a lot of people through there but the service was still friendly. For nearly 20 years, I have loved making this a regular stop whenever I have been in the area. The food is always great and I leave stuffed. Fred's fish house has good (not "great") food, the waitresses are nice.... I had bariatric surgery (I do have the card), and can only eat a very small portion so I usually order off of the kids menue, restaurants 9 1/2 times out of 10 let me order off of the kids menue minus the drink. Not only did the owner not allow it, I requested he come talk to me in regards to this, and he wouldn't even look in our direction. My husband ordered his meal with a baked potato with butter and chives.....we were charged .75 for the flipping chives.... we've never been charged for chives! EVER.... We've brought family and friends to this place, paid for strangers food in his restaurant without telling his patrons who was paying (which makes his restaurant more memorable)..... We do like (not love) the place, but I don't appreciate the lack of the owners customer service. The waitress was sweet. read more

We were excited about a trip back after we had been here last year during vacation. Service was painfully slow this time which was a disappointment. After a long wait for drinks, a waiter brought us our 8 drinks but had no idea what drinks they were so we kind of had to taste and pass them out! The waiter was short with me when I ordered and was asking questions about the menu. I ordered the Cajun catfish. When I received the catfish without Cajun seasoning, I mentioned the error and his response was "yeah that doesn't have any Cajun seasoning". Love this place !! Great service & the food is always a hit no matter what I order.

The only thing good at place is the view. Had the fish and shrimp with frys and it all taste the same...bland. For comparison think of Long John Silvers. The fry's were load with grease and the hush puppies were very dry and also bland. If you plan on paying with an American Express save your self the trip, they don't accept it. The worst coleslaw that I have tried to eat in a long time. It was fine ground cabbage and way too sweet. That out of the way, the rest of the food was excellent. Lunch special was three large, perfectly cooked, pieces of catfish, hush puppies, and potato wedges. If this place is like Mammouth Spring's menu , then you can't go wrong. We drive 3 hrs to get to get their best hush-puppies, pickled tomatoes, and great tasting catfish/fries platters. Mammouth has a beautiful lake, waterfalls, ducks, and a surrounding 3/4 mile walking trail to ease your food down after eating ! We remain 'full' when we return home. Can't say that about Memphis eateries, ya'll. Definately worth the drive just for the day. Repeat visitors with high recommended ratings. read more
