Turtle Sunday

Oh Fred's you never disappoint. A gorgeous Saturday afternoon demanded a stop at Fred's. We opted for a Turtle Sunday and it was sublime! Don't sleep on Fred's--whether it's for something sweet or savory--they'll hook you up and you will be happy.

A great treat on a hot day (or a cold one... in Wisconsin, it never seems to prevent us from getting some). They have vanilla, chocolate, and twist - but you can add some variety with toppings. No seating inside, but they do have some tables outside with umbrellas for shade. It's within walking distance of Wick Field/Park - so you could grab and go nearby.

Arguably one of the best burgers in Milwaukee! Their double with bacon is a GREAT portion, crispy fries and a cheese cup is an added bonus. Regardless of what I've gotten from there, it's always been delicious. Even better than their food is their customer service. Always greeted with a smile and it's gotten to a point that they recognize my gf and I when we're there Don't forget the custard!

I still stop at Fred's once in a while for a pickup order on my lunch break. Even with getting extra cheese on my burger, the cheese still doesn't stretch completely to the edges, but the meat is quality, it's a large size burger, and it's seasoned just right. I believe it's one of the best burgers you can get in this area. The mozzarella sticks are no longer the wonton kind, which is disappointing cause those were awesome, but the more generic battered mozzarella sticks they have now are still good. The inside is blocked off, but they have a window on the side of the building for placing and picking up orders. If it's nice out, there's a few outdoor tables to it at and eat. Ordering on the website is easy to do and recommended since the wait times can be long and it gives you an estimated pickup time.

Great find!!! The service was awesome, the girl at the counter had on a hamburger hat, so was so friendly and helpful. We tried a cheeseburger and the BLT, seasoned fries and chocolate shake and witches brew shake. The burger was great it's greasy and messy in a good way. The BLT was also super good. Fries perfectly cooked and seasoned. While we were eating outside the chief came out and checked on everyone. Great burger!

Very unassuming.

The planets were aligned today and this would be the last day that I would drive past because if I drove past a Mc Donald's I was going to stop for a cone and BAMB, Fred's custard appeared and around the block I went which was a dam long block with the crazy area. As for wanting a cold cone at the first MD's I saw Fred's was way more than I had even planed for in a very good way. Fred's was an unexpected blank canvas for a cold treat so I was wide open when I walked in. Fred's is like a mini me of the custard game because it's tiny and in nowheresville at a funky area of roads, highways, underpasses and overpasses of the area and across from an eerie/frozen looking police compound. The place is takeout only with fast food and cold treats, counter service only and not very impressive. My vanilla generic cone is now going to be way better and I have to choose something off the menu and it all would work but after careful consideration I chose the Strawberry Sunday, small for $2.95 which was bigger than I expected and value wise compared to most custard places a nice treat for the price. It actually looked pretty good for the reasonable price with bountiful strawberryness, frozen but good to the last drop. Can whip cream, nuts, thick surgery strawberry topping with plenty of strawberries and a cherry on top which worked. No it's not the best cold sweet treat freshness or quality wise but it was not skimpy for a small and ended up being way better than that vanilla cone I was looking for so an unexpected stop actually satisfied, I almost got tired of the of the strawberryness because the cold custard was out before strawberry stuff. It's not a destination stop because of the area and just might be overlooked/not thought of but it satisfied my cold treat crave for sure.

Tonight we treated ourselves to Fred's and it was delicious!!! Our order was ready in 15 minutes and we had the remote grill experience we were looking for. Fried Pickles had a tasty batter and paired well w Ranch. Chicago Dog was fried and had lots of tasty toppings. My husband also had a Bacon Cheeseburger*not pictured but he enjoyed it! The Italian Beef was thinly sliced with hot giardiniera and au jus. It was one of the best versions we've ever had!!! Sooooo goooddd. We will definitely be back and can't wait to try more from this neighborhood gem

Whole bun soiled can literally squeeze juice

What I thought I was a really nice place is not a good place for African AmericanS, they are obviously not a fan of our kind. Probably because they stereotype all to be same. Come here every weekend and spend 20 dollars on top of that leave a tip( for what idk) but I still do. Today I get a burger that was soiled I mean soiled and dripping in grease, I return with the upmost respect and explained the situation he offered to remake the burger and if I would hold on to fries it would save him some time, he was being rude in a sarcastic way, why would I spend 20 dollars to eat a hot burger and cold fries. So basically you aren't wiLling to accommodate. I ask for a refund and the true red colors come out. I will never return again but we have to stop spending our money with these folks.

**July 2025: Wednesday Lunch Visit**…read more While I was researching iconic food in Wisconsin I came across an item called Butter Burger which sounded so decadent and delicious. My friend and I were only exploring Milwaukee for a day so we wanted to make sure that we picked a good spot to try this region favorite. AJ Bombers came up consistently ranked on top for really great burgers. We came on a weekday so parking was pretty easy, but it is metered street parking. The restaurant is located at the corner of a large building and since we arrived right at opening we were seated right away. We ordered the following -Cheese Curds $9 - These were delicious. Nice and crispy, almost had an airfried texture to it so it tasted healthier than others that I've tried -Bomb Butter Burger $14 - The meat was very juicy and overall a good burger -Milwaukee Burger $12.50 - This was a fantastic burger and I think I preferred this to the Bomb Butter Burger. The flavors were more balanced IMHO -Tater Tots and Fries: The burgers all came with a side and I enjoyed both! They were freshly fried and served hot. The tots made me feel really nostalgic since those were things I remember eating growing up. The unfortunate news is that this restaurant despite all the accolades will be closing later in 2025. It's served Milwaukee for 16 years and while I'm bummed that they'll be closing their doors later this year I'm glad that I got enjoy one of Milwaukee's best. If you get a chance to check them out their decor also has a lot of personality.

I haven't been in years, but it was sad to see that they don't give out peanut like they used to and they were not all over the floor. There was a singular waitress there but she was nice and checked in on us. I ordered the Milwaukee Burger. I loved the onions on it and added tomato to it. I thought the burger itself was ok. Not too much flavor, I wish it was a little more pink. It would've been better if the bun was more toasted as well. I ordered onion rings, fried pickles, and cheese curds. Cheese curds and onion rings were really good, but the frickles were huge and every time I would take a bite the pickle would come out of the batter and I would be stuck with the plain batter alone. Overall loved the ambiance and I was miss Aj Bombers and its history.

I enjoyed all the sports decor and memorabilia on the walls. Right off the bat, one of the things that stood out to me was how incredibly affordable this place was! Looking at the prices, I was surprised that you could get a burger here for around twelve bucks including fries. That's like fast food prices. Most restaurants charge way more than that and don't include fries, so this place is an amazing bargain! We got their cheese balls, which were cheese curds. These were not bad. I do prefer a more beer battered curd, but I didn't mind these. I also got a bacon cheeseburger called The Loser. In reality, it tastes like a winner. The bread bun is amazing, so soft and fresh. The burger is juicy and flavorful. It's also not too crazy big where all the toppings fall apart. The fries were also crispy and tasty. Our server was also very kind and attentive. She gave us sugar cookies at the end of our meal, which was a nice treat. Overall, I enjoyed coming here. I would come here again to catch a game and enjoy a drink and some bites. You get a decent burger that is also a good bang for your buck.

Saw this place on the walk back to our car and stopped in for a couple drinks and some appetizers. We were very happy we did. We sat at the bar and it was fairly empty at the time, which was a Thursday around 1pm. The bar is so beautiful with all of the copper details. It feels very clean with an upscale look but doesn't feel like it's too fancy to stop in on a regular day. Our bartender was awesome and she was training a new person that day so she was happy when we chose some fun cocktails for the newbie to make. Our favorite was the Beet Marshall. Oh my gosh is this a delicious cocktail! Unique too! Very refreshing, light. And fantastic color! My partner tried the Rhubarb Negroni which was also very good but we both decided Beet Marshall was the winner! We had the fresh pork rinds for an appetizer, came out sizzlin and poppin! Yes!! We also had the Cajun dill curds they were really good, not too heavy with just enough seasoning. I think this place is a great spot to check out anytime! They had tvs at the bar so sports fans could see their favorite games while enjoying a drink and some food. The locals at the bar seemed like they knew everyone and that this was the place to gather.

Nestled among a lively stretch of bars and restaurants, it has a fun atmosphere that makes it easy to settle in for a few hours. I stopped by during March Madness, and despite it being the middle of the day, the place was buzzing with fans watching the tournament. The bartender--who was the only one working at the time--did a phenomenal job keeping up with the crowd. While drinks occasionally took a little longer, she handled the rush with professionalism and a great attitude. One thing that really stood out was the bar itself; it's impressively long, possibly the biggest I've seen in a venue of this size. The food was exactly what you want from a sports bar: satisfying, flavorful, and the perfect complement to an afternoon of college basketball. I'd definitely stop back to watch another game.

While other restaurants in the district had hour and a half plus waits, we practically owned the place sitting wherever we liked. On event days they have a reduced menu. As they were slow, the kitchen gracefully allowed us to place a regular menu Crustless Grilled Cheese with Tomato Bisque order for our kiddo. I ordered the LP Burger with bacon ($14 + $2.5 - double smash, sharp american cheese, shredded lettuce, fresh tomato, shaved red onion, LP sauce, potato roll) and my wife ordered the Potato Chip Crusted Chicken Sammy ($12 - honey mop glaze, mayo, shredded lettuce and pickles). The bar has a fair amount of good bourbons and at decent prices for being in the deer district, such as the double neat pour of Stagg I had. There was one bartender/server for the place, but she knew how to hustle while still being super friendly. The interior could use some art on the walls, but is bright and clean otherwise. The food was delicious and presented very well. That bacon I paid extra for? Oh my goodness. Thick cut, perfectly cooked, so dang good. Usually I regret adding bacon but here it is a must. My 8-year-old kiddo, who is practically a vegetarian at this point, devoured her grilled cheese and half of the big bowl of soup. I never even saw my wife's chicken sammy, so you know it was good when it goes down that fast. Thankfully as our food arrived the place started to fill, as they deserve to be filled! I want to come back on a non-event day to try the shrimp poboy, their house dry rub wings, as well as on the weekend for their brunch.
