I still stop at Fred's once in a while for a pickup order on my lunch break. Even with getting extra cheese on my burger, the cheese still doesn't stretch completely to the edges, but the meat is quality, it's a large size burger, and it's seasoned just right. I believe it's one of the best burgers you can get in this area. The mozzarella sticks are no longer the wonton kind, which is disappointing cause those were awesome, but the more generic battered mozzarella sticks they have now are still good. The inside is blocked off, but they have a window on the side of the building for placing and picking up orders. If it's nice out, there's a few outdoor tables to it at and eat. Ordering on the website is easy to do and recommended since the wait times can be long and it gives you an estimated pickup time. read more

Great find!!! The service was awesome, the girl at the counter had on a hamburger hat, so was so friendly and helpful. We tried a cheeseburger and the BLT, seasoned fries and chocolate shake and witches brew shake. The burger was great it's greasy and messy in a good way. The BLT was also super good. The planets were aligned today and this would be the last day that I would drive past because if I drove past a Mc Donald's I was going to stop for a cone and BAMB, Fred's custard appeared and around the block I went which was a dam long block with the crazy area. As for wanting a cold cone at the first MD's I saw Fred's was way more than I had even planed for in a very good way. Fred's was an unexpected blank canvas for a cold treat so I was wide open when I walked in. Fred's is like a mini me of the custard game because it's tiny and in nowheresville at a funky area of roads, highways, underpasses and overpasses of the area and across from an eerie/frozen looking police compound. The place is takeout only with fast food and cold treats, counter service only and not very impressive. My vanilla generic cone is now going to be way better and I have to choose something off the menu and it all would work but after careful consideration I chose the Strawberry Sunday, small for $2.95 which was bigger than I expected and value wise compared to most custard places a nice treat for the price. It actually looked pretty good for the reasonable price with bountiful strawberryness, frozen but good to the last drop. Can whip cream, nuts, thick surgery strawberry topping with plenty of strawberries and a cherry on top which worked. No it's not the best cold sweet treat freshness or quality wise but it was not skimpy for a small and ended up being way better than that vanilla cone I was looking for so an unexpected stop actually satisfied, I almost got tired of the of the strawberryness because the cold custard was out before strawberry stuff. It's not a destination stop because of the area and just might be overlooked/not thought of but it satisfied my cold treat crave for sure. read more

Sooo, I wanted some custard, and checked with Siri to find a place close to where I was. Siri said Fred was close and I tried to picture in my head where this could be. Decided to have Siri show me and then remembered where Fred was. Now to be honest, I didn't think Fred survived the times. Last time I was there was late '90s. The food was good then. And the strawberry sundae I had today was just as good. It all started with the friendly staff greeting me as I entered to the quick and knowledgeable answer to my question. Then I got my sundae!!! I've driven past Fred's many times over the years and finally got a chance to visit. I ordered a Chicago dog, a chili dog and an order of fries. The fries were crinkle cut, which is my favorite, so that was a good start. They were crispy and delicious. The Chicago dog was also pretty good, but I wasn't that impressed with the chili on the chili dog. My test is to try it the chili separately. If I would eat a bowl of it, then I'm a fan. This chili was of the mushy kind, so I wouldn't order this hot dog again. Fred's had burgers, other sandwiches and custard. I plan to go back and try some other items on the menu some day. Tonight we treated ourselves to Fred's and it was delicious!!! Our order was ready in 15 minutes and we had the remote grill experience we were looking for. Fried Pickles had a tasty batter and paired well w Ranch. Chicago Dog was fried and had lots of tasty toppings. My husband also had a Bacon Cheeseburger*not pictured but he enjoyed it! The Italian Beef was thinly sliced with hot giardiniera and au jus. It was one of the best versions we've ever had!!! Sooooo goooddd. Today I went Fred's Custard with my son, this is one of his and my daughters favorite summertime places. I had the bacon cheeseburger with the works with extra onions and onion rings. While the burger is not Culver's quality, it was nonetheless quite tasty. The onion rings were good and crunchy with a slight hint of salt. The restaurant is a sleepy neighborhood joint that will get my business again this summer. read more

What I thought I was a really nice place is not a good place for African AmericanS, they are obviously not a fan of our kind. Probably because they stereotype all to be same. Come here every weekend and spend 20 dollars on top of that leave a tip( for what idk) but I still do. Today I get a burger that was soiled I mean soiled and dripping in grease, I return with the upmost respect and explained the situation he offered to remake the burger and if I would hold on to fries it would save him some time, he was being rude in a sarcastic way, why would I spend 20 dollars to eat a hot burger and cold fries. Small place that does not have room to eat inside. In the summertime I assume you can eat outside by your car but in the winter it is more of a takeaway place. They serve burgers, hot dogs, and best of all - custard. I had the turtle sundae with toffee chips. It was DELICIOUS. It was big, chocolatey, full of caramel, pecans and nuts. They put all of these wonderful items on the bottom and top of the sundae so you can enjoy all of its goodness in each bite. I cannot wait to go back and have it again! read more

I saw this ridiculous special on the Food Network (Or the Travel Channel, one of the two) a few months ago about the best burger in Milwaukee. They went to Sobelmans and AJ Bombers to find out which was better. I don't even know who won. It doesn't matter. Fred's is the best burger in Milwaukee. I'm not sure what the special sauce is. Maybe it's mustard? Or some kind of spicy mayo? Who knows. All that matters is that it is meat ambrosia. I'm shocked that this place doesn't have more reviews and stars on Yelp!. Do we not have people who Yelp in this neighborhood? Do you not eat grilled meats? This is a no frills establishment. They don't even have tables. Get your food and eat in your car. Or go home at eat. Or eat standing on the corner. Whatever, just try on of their burgers and tell me it isn't better than Kopps, or Oscars, or AJ's, or whatever. Some places are serious about no substitutions, no additions- this place rolls with your dreams. Okay to start, the sesame seed bun/roll carb thing- so good and fluffy but strong enough to hold all the toppings I wanted. If a bun gets too nasty, I usually just commit to the stronger one and open-face it. I didn't on this- the ratio of meat/ veg/ sauce held its own to the bun. Let It Go/Let It Go! My young daughters insistence on watching Disney's Frozen on an endless loop got that song stuck in my head. It also reminded me that I had to write a review for my recent trip to this little joint. Speaking of Frozen and Let It Go, this place should let go of the "Frozen Custard" in its moniker and just be known as "Fred's Grill". The custard should definitely not be advertised, because quite frankly it's not good at all. I had a cone of vanilla/chocolate swirl and it was gummy and lumpy in texture. It didn't have the rich creaminess of some of the better custard joints in the area and it just didn't taste good. Thank goodness I ordered some lunch as well. That was the saving grace here. They had a very diversified menu, but I went with the simple order of a burger with the works, an order of fries and a drink. The burger was great, the patty was good and the bun was soft, but when I asked for the works I didn't except a half of bottle of ketchup and a half bottle of mustard on my burger, but even with that I really enjoyed it. The fries were good as well, but they might want to check the levels on the Mountain Dew machine. My drink was pretty syrupy. This was my 666th check in on Yelp. Does this mean that Frozen Custard will be the death of me? Talk about cost effective here. A burger with the works, fries, a drink and a single cone of frozen custard ran me a little over $8. Got to love the prices here. This place is very old school. That means it's small and it's takeout only. They have a very small parking lot that was filled up even on the blustery winter day I came in. The streets surrounding it have plenty of areas that have No Parking zones, and don't even think about parking illegally since this place faces the police station. Expect a walk when you come here. If you're coming here for custard, forget about it. The food here might earn it a return visit though. read more

I came here with a group of friends later on a Friday evening and was a little caught off guard by the small size as we all entered at once. We placed out order (the staff wasn't super friendly) and waited for our food. Our order was hot and correct and good! However, by the time we finished some of our friends still didn't even have their meals yet which was a bummer. They had forgotten their order. We also got ice cream which was delicious! Stopped by today to get a couple bbq beef sandwiches but the guy working the register was busy having a long conversation with someone not even buying food. Stood in line several minutes and he did not even bother to say he would help me . So extremely rude poor behavior. Whoever owns freds must be sleeping. Absolutely incredible service and food! Total gem! We got custard, a cheeseburger, and the polish sausage. The custard was perfect, the burger melted in your mouth, and the polish sausage was an explosion of flavor that left us satisfied! Our favorite part was the workers! This place surprised me! I was looking for a decent fish fry, am old fashioned fish fry! One draw back I needed to have it delivered, I'm a shut-in. The fish was fabulous, crunchy on the outside, flaky on the inside the cod was done to perfection, the coating was done as well, no gooey insides. The fries could have used a couple extra minutes in the fryer they were kinda pale and flimsy. Rye bread w/ Caraway always an excellent addition when you're talking old fashioned fish fry! The coleslaw was made with horseradish, um that's a HUGE NO! Tarter sauce was right in the money, if I'm not mistaken, there was even capers in it, which a lot of people leave out!
