Amazing is just the start. Great old fashion comfort food. Nothing but stick to your ribs goodness. Get yourself the breakfast club. Bacon, Sausage w/ gravy with Egg and American cheese. Pro-tip: get the bacon well done. Fred's- If it ain't here you don't need it.

Wednesday, January 14, 2026 @ 2:47-2:58pm 2 people working. No hello or welcome in. No acknowledgement whatsoever. No "can we help you?" There was no interaction at all until he scanned my items and told me the total and said to tap to pay here. Are they ok? Did something happen that we weren't aware of? From my experience being in Avery and Watauga counties, I have experienced very friendly locals and all the restaurants, shops and pet store were all very nice and super friendly people. So please enlightened me. Thank you!

Awesome outdoor dining area. Breakfast was well portioned. Service well just kinda meh with a grumpy cashier but it was Monday.

If you are traveling through the Beech Mountain area and need some quick groceries or clothing items(jackets, shoes, gloves) Fred's seems to have pretty much anything you'd need. The only downside is that with it being the most convenient spot on the mountain it is also the most expensive. Probably better off shopping elsewhere but along with their great selection, convenient location and friendly staff it isn't too bad of a place to stop in and grab a quick item or two. read more

Fred's General Mercantile has everything. It is not easy to find stores in beech Mountain. In addition there is a deli downstairs that serves a great breakfast and lunch. read more

Vacationers beware!! I attempted to make a return on an unused item with the price tag still on it. The older lady with blue eye shadow told me there were no refunds and all customers are told this upon check out. She couldn't show me a no refunds policy displayed anywhere behind the counter or on the premises. She told me she wouldn't refund me. Poor business practices Fred!!!! read more

Something for everybody - just explore; and be sure to go through all of the rooms upstairs! I got snacks, toys for the kids, a gift for my bro-in-law, souvenirs, a few things for the cabin and a Christmas tree ornament. It's the Convenience Store of the Mountain. Not to be confused with the Big-Box Discount Retailer, it's a small-ish country store on the mountain that has a lot of essentials. Very Friendly Staff, and decent selection. :) read more

Don't forget about the bakery dept. of Fred's. Its all home made , fresh daily. The soup in the deli is wonderfu. The friendly service is by far excepional. Its very hard to get around in the store during the busiest season, "Christmas Holidays." other wise its the best!!!!. read more

We could not find it. We asked a young lady, Cate on her name tag, for help. After determining which item we were looking for she determined that they were in a shipping box on the top shelf. She was going to get a special ladder to get it down, but first answered some questions we had about features we were looking for, pull out spray head with magnetic latch, and a top fill soap dispenser to place in hole where our current leaky faucet's spray head was located. It turned out that there was another premium brand with both these features that did not require us to wait while she went to retrieve the high ladder move a bunch of boxes, retrieve the shipping carton, replace moved cartons with other products, bring carton with 4 faucets in it, open the box, check that it what we were looking for and handing us the package the retail box with the faucet with us and take us to where the top filled counter installed soap despensers which are sold separately from the model we had selected on-line. All this with a friendly smile and never a sign that she was getting impatient with our many questions or acting as if she needed to get somewhere else. In short great friendly and helpful customer service.

I ordered a grill a few weeks ago to pick up the next day and to my surprise it was not in the store it had to be ordered after saying it was in stock online. Then it didn't come in when the email said it would. Lowes is just a sorry place to depend on anymore!!!

That said, once we ordered, the food came out surprisingly fast (5-10 minutes), and they clearly had a solid system in place for how busy they were. It's an order-then-find-a-seat kind of spot. The $15.99 combo special is absolutely the move: a main/sandwich/hot dog, two sides, a drink, and a small piece of fudge. The sides are on the smaller side, but the sandwiches and hot dogs are generously sized, so it balances out. Plus, the fudge at the end is a nice little sweet touch. Plenty of BBQ sauce options that slapped, too. Food-wise, everything we had was really good--flavorful and satisfying. The only hiccup (and the reason for the 4 stars) was with a couple of items. My hot dog was supposed to come with nacho cheese sauce and caramelized onions (I even watched it get rung in), but it came out completely plain. The mozzarella sticks also came out cold, which was not great--especially when you're expecting a cheese pull. When I brought the items back, I was asked if I wanted the mozz sticks microwaved... which was a hard NO. I asked for them to be remade properly which is when an older woman--possibly a manager or owner-- stepped in and did offer to remake them but seemed visibly annoyed. I get your busy, but hey -- my order was wrong so you should probably address that before rushing to the next order. For the hotdog, I told her what was missing and instead of the nacho cheese sauce and caramelized onions that was supposed to come on it, I was handed cold shredded cheese and chopped raw red onions. The food still ended up tasting good, but the reaction to the mistake was disappointing. Overall, it's a solid BBQ spot with great value and good food. I'd recommend it and would go back, though I might try a few other places first. With better handling of small mistakes, this could easily be a 5-star experience.

This place is awesome. Tough to find parking and if it's foggy you better watch out. The atmosphere is really laid back and the service is great. Creaky wood floors and cobbled together architecture make for a great experience. It's like stepping back into the past. If they don't have it you don't need it. This place is worth seeing and chances are you'll take something home with you to remember your trip with. Definitely worth a stop for any area visitors. Be sure to check out the amazing artwork on the second floor and take some of that home with you too! read more
