I would never think I would be able to afford having a service like Golden Root, however I find not only is the food super high quality and cooked to my preferences it is actually economical for me. Groceries are so expensive and to buy the ingredients to make dishes like this is cost prohibitive. It is also cheaper than eating out every night. The servings are generous, the recipes are really delicious and they switch it up, but not so much that you don't get excited to see new favorites back in a few weeks. They use compostable packaging and jars and paper bags that I returned so there is zero waste except for one type of small bag they use. I also like that I can be on the "a la carte" plan, chosing the meals and the quantity myself each week. You can also do a subscription where they take care of all the planning for you and it happens automatically. We pick order up at the yummy smelling little shop on Tuesday afternoons. They always have delicious treats at the front table and the sweet staff hand over the goods. I feel so good supporting a local woman owned business who hires locals and uses local produce and ingredients. It is everything I want to support. I realize that for families this might be entirely too expensive but if you are single or a couple maybe check them out!

I understand about recent inflation and I am okay with spending more on good quality food, however it has become exorbitant-- $35 (plus fees and delivery) on a salad that says it feeds 2 people yet barely feeds one person. I could go to a nice local restaurant like Mentone and get the same sized salad freshly made for $18. $48 for meat entrees that are supposed to feed 2-3 people yet have one small chicken breast and feed one person. It felt expensive yet worth it when I started with Golden Roots a few years ago but now it costs $190 per meal to feed our family of four, because we need two entrees and two salads for it to be enough food, including fees and delivery. We found another delivery service that uses organic ingredients and is a better value. I will miss Golden Root's food.

Alexia, Sunnyvale, CA…read more 11/11/2010 My family has ordered from Whole Family Meals several times, and it has been delicious each time! It is so nice to have a healthy, satisfying, organic and delicious dinner delivered to my door! Portion sizes are good and can eat at least 2 or 3 times off a dinner. I cant say enough great things about this company and their delicious food! It is also a great gift to give a friend!

BACK STORY: I have searched high and low for meal delivery…read moreservices and have finally found something that meets my needs. I started getting interested in make-ahead-meal prep and meal delivery services during my 3 years commuting the entire length of 880 - traffic just didn't leave me much time to have a good, healthy meal at home. I would often find myself pulling over at a random exit on the 880 just because I was so hungry after working late and maybe pick something up for my husband as well or leave him to fend for himself. We tried Dream Dinners, which was convenient, but does require a certain amount of freezer space, and I wasn't all that impressed with their ingredients either - lots of canned, prepared and drab supermarket fare with unknown origin. I felt I could do a lot of the same with a group of friends on a costco run for much, much less. After we had our first child, we REALLY wish we had some kind of a meal delivery in the first few months of sleep-deprived-don't-have-a-spare-moment-between-diaper-changes-feedings-burpings-comforting-back-to-sleep. We were REALLY hurting for good, healthy food then - particularly for a nursing mother who needs a lot of good nutrients (not to mention rest!) when trying to build up supply and then later is burning calories like a marathon runner (well, not quite - equivalent to running 11 miles a day) and wants to watch what chemicals she passes on to the tiny baby. But the delivery costs from the meal delivery places I looked into were a bit prohibitive/cost-inefficient, particularly because many were based in San Francisco and beyond. Then recently we added not 1, but 2 babies to our family. And we thought just 1 was the hardest thing we'd ever done before that! Thanks to the kindness of friends, we were able to survive with the support and nourishment of their frequent meal deliveries in the first few months and it was such a wonderful gift to not have to worry about where our next meal would come from. WHOLE FAMILY MEALS Shortly after that, we discovered that Whole Family Meals and have ordered at least a half dozen meals from them so far. I have personally really enjoyed the meals because they're tasty, but they're healthy so I feel good afterwards as well (and I'm amazed at how they're tasty without having to depend on salt/msg and oil/super high fat content to do it!). I love all the whole grains, fruit vegetables and fruits and amazing quality of proteins. My favorite, hands down, is the pork tenderloin. I never knew pork could be so tender! It was delicious! I not only like the convenience and having more time to spend with my family, being less stressed, but I love the way Stacey and Bobbi introduce me to new foods or recipes as well - it's so much better than a cooking show because you actually get to taste this stuff! I appreciate the variety of foods - meat, poultry, seafood, quinoa, bulgur, barley, plums, peaches, pears... I could go on and on (and I think Stacey and Bobbi should post a list of all the ingredients they've ever used to give new customers a sense of the amazing selection), but you definitely get to experience how fortunate we are to live in the Bay Area when you see all the interesting and innovative ways they use the local ingredients here. It's also really nice to have a little something sweet included as well. :) We have since gifted the meal to a few friends when we know that they're going to be a little bit busy with work/family/school, and it is absolutely our go-to gift for families who have had a new baby. One of the families had some vegetarian members, and they were completely willing to accommodate the request and create an alternative for those serving(s). So I love how this service is now making me a more thoughtful and generous person, without having to break the bank! To conclude, it's really, really nice to be able to get a meal delivered to our home that we can just pop in the oven while tending to our kids, that is nutritious, delicious and exposes us to a wide variety of food (which any parent with picky parents has probably read is really important to do). I'm definitely more relaxed on the days we get delivery, not having to worry about menu planning, prep, cooking and cleanup all while getting spending quality family time and getting the kids down for bed.
