For nearly eight years, I lived with a growing lump on my scalp and, more significantly, with the…read morepsychological burden of not knowing what it was. I am self-employed, and like many business owners, there were years when the needs of my business and family came before my own healthcare. My work often requires me to move in and out of trailers, trucks, and box trucks. Because of my height, I repeatedly struck the same area of my head, and over time a painful lump developed and continued to grow. The physical discomfort was difficult, but the uncertainty was worse. I remember looking in the mirror and wondering whether it could be cancer. My thoughts went immediately to my wife, my children, and everything I had worked to build. Eventually, I accepted whatever the outcome might be. Then I lived with that uncertainty for roughly five more years. Every morning, I saw the lump while getting ready. During the workday, I would feel it when wiping sweat from my head. At night, I would see it again in the mirror. It became a constant reminder of the same questions: Do I have years, months, weeks, or days? Is this something serious that I have simply refused to confront? At 43, I tried to make peace with that possibility. I had raised a family, watched my children go on to college, completed my education, written books, and built a business. I told myself that if something happened to me, at least I had lived a meaningful life. My wife finally insisted that I stop ignoring it. After research, she scheduled an appointment with Advanced Dermatology in Monroe, Wisconsin. We drove from the Wisconsin Dells area because we believed the practice was worth the trip. Sitting in the waiting room was emotionally overwhelming. I kept wondering whether this would be the day someone finally told me what I had feared for years. When I was taken back, I explained that repeated appointments are difficult to coordinate with my business schedule and asked whether, if possible, we could get to the bottom of the issue that day. The physician examined the area and calmly told me, "We're going to take care of this today." It is difficult to describe what those words meant after nearly eight years of uncertainty. I learned that the growth was a pilar cyst. The area was prepared, anesthetized, and treated. In an extraordinarily short period of time, something that had occupied my thoughts for thousands of days was resolved in one visit. Walking out of the office, I had one overwhelming thought: I wish I had gone sooner. From the front desk to the nurses, assistants, and physician, everyone I encountered at Advanced Dermatology in Monroe was professional, compassionate, attentive, and clear in their communication. I never felt like just another patient. They listened to me, understood my circumstances, and acted decisively. There is an important distinction between treating a physical condition and relieving the human burden attached to it. This team did both. If you are postponing an examination because of work, finances, scheduling, or fear, take something from my experience: uncertainty can become its own form of suffering. Make the appointment. To the physician and the entire team at Advanced Dermatology in Monroe: thank you. What may have been routine in your day was anything but routine for me. You allowed me to leave looking toward the future without constantly wondering how much of it I had left. Five stars does not adequately express my gratitude.
