Today I was driving to Boston from Western Mass. I realized that I was very hungry and decided to stop at Freight House for a late lunch (hoping to take it to go so as not to prolong the drive). To make a long story short, they were out of my first choice on the menu. As I was considering what else to order, the owner came up from behind and made a snide comment and then walked away. I was surprised, especially since in past years, Freight House was a friendly place to stop. I left right away and was upset in the car. Suggestion 1: let people know when they sit down at the counter if you are out of menu items. Suggestion 2: don't be rude to your customers. I love this place, stop in and try their homemade pies. I ride my Harley at a leisurely pace, touring across the French King bridge and around the Quabbin. The beauty of Western Mass is summed up in the view of the Connecticut River from the bridge, especially during foliage season. But I digress, back to the Freight House, my favored stop on my tours. It's a worn place, antiques lining its broad porch and spilling over into the neighboring area with cement and stone yard ornaments. Don't be deterred! Inside you'll find rooms stuffed with antique brick-a-brac, but make your way to a stool at the food counter. Service is prompt and personable - well, of course, there's only a handful of stools. The prices are fair, and I love this unassuming oasis and the folks that work here, so I tip generously. I've sampled most of the menu items, and always been satisfied. But the hidden gems are the homemade pies. I love a good pie, and most pies don't measure up. I look for a great crust, flakey on top and bottom. Then I want a good filling, full of authentic flavor, not cloyingly sweet, or runny, or gelatinous. Tough to find? Yup! Found it here, at Freight House, every time. Very cool antique store and very large. But make sure you don't need to use the bathroom here. It's locked and a lady gives you a hard time if you ask to use it. I was challenged to declare if I was going to buy something- then she would let me use it. I told her I was browsing and if I saw something I liked I might buy it...and she apparently decided that I qualify for the bathroom use, and reluctantly let me use it. Utterly childish. Somebody in this place needs to lighten up. An antique store is for browsing. It's not wrong for customers to use the bathroom. read more

One of the worst places I've been in a long, time!!! unwelcoming, rude staff. Unsanitary conditions, and over pricing. you pay four dollars extra for one slice of bacon on a bacon, egg and cheese....once I got to my car and opened the sandwich I was disappointed (you pay $15 for a breakfast sandwich you expect it to be pretty good) when I went back inside to discuss it, she pointed to the sign that said all sales are final. I complained that money is tight right now and this is ridiculous and then she rudely opened the register and threw a $10 bill at me. I just wanted a refund on my card that I paid with. . I told her she was rude and she could keep her ten dollar bill. I don't know how they survive. You can't be rude with bad food and make it these days. I think their days are numbered. read more

Drove 2 hours to this overpriced "antique" shop. No working bathroom, but they offer a porta-potty that I got reprimanded for asking to use. Why do you even have it? I came here to browse and possibly buy something, happy to wait until I've found something, but don't withhold your bathroom from folks legitimately shopping at your business. Aside from that, the owner was griping the entire time while behind the counter. "People want to bring their trash from their cars in here - no way, I give them a bag! Keep your trash". It was all very dramatic, and didn't seem to stop the entire time we were there. Half this place is heated, so if you want to see the entirety of the store, be sure to bring your heavy winter jackets and ear muffs. Wayyyyy overpriced. $24 for random glass bottles? Nah. Had a good laugh over a $5 coffee stirrer from McDonalds though! Lots of passive aggressive signs everywhere with "rules" about how to frequent the shop. Two stars. Wouldn't recommend unless you enjoy paying a lot of money for trash and holding it until you decide to purchase something! read more

Two friends and I were on a road trip from Boston to Deerfield on Saturday, November 11th. Along the way, while driving through Erving, we approached Freight House Antiques; a store I had been in about 8 or 9 times before (and really liked!). I told my friends how "great" this store is, and asked if they wanted to stop in and see all the "cool stuff" and they agreed, so I pulled in. As we approached, both of my friends said they needed to use the restroom before we started shopping. Friend #1 saw the sign on the restroom door that said you had to buy something in order to use the restroom (which was conveniently hung right next to a clear box on the wall, where people could leave "tips"). He said he "would definitely buy something, but really needed to use the restroom first". He was then told by the lady there (not sure if she was a manger, or the owner, or whatever) that he had to buy something *BEFORE* he could get the code to unlock the restroom. I thought that was absurd, especially since we hadn't even had a chance to look around yet, but he reluctantly agreed, and grabbed a can of soda. He put the soda on the counter, went to pay with his debit card, and was informed that they "don't take cards". He had no cash on him, so he had to come and find me, and luckily I had some cash on me (but what if I didn't?). When he was done, friend #2 said she needed to use the restroom as well. At first, I figured the three of us were there "together" so the one purchase already made would be good enough for all of us, but just to be fair, she picked out a drink to buy, but also didn't have any cash on her (and once again, had to borrow some from me). We thought this was absolutely crazy, but that was only the beginning. After her purchase, she was then told that she couldn't bring her bag into the rest room with her (something about people flushing stuff down the toilet, or whatever). She (rightfully so) said she did not want to leave her bag (with her phone, wallet, keys, credit cards, etc). with someone she doesn't know, so she had to come find us (again!) to babysit her bag while she used the restroom. I thought that was crazy - what if she needed things from her bag (makeup, etc.) as most women do, while she was in there? This whole experience left a VERY bad impression on us - so bad, we barely even looked around after we were done with the restroom, and don't think we will ever go back. Bottom line is, there were so many better ways this could have been handled. First of all, TAKE CREDIT CARDS (and don't say there's a $5 minimum, ether, which is illegal). I totally get it, if I owned a store, I wouldn't want people constantly coming in just to use my restroom either, but requiring customers to go through all this process (and purchase) first was just ridiculous. Taking credit cards, and having a public restroom are just two parts of owning a business like this. If you don't want your customers to feel welcome and comfortable, then you shouldn't even be in business, or at least know when it's the right thing to do to make an exception. It's not as if this store is in a bad part of town, where people would constantly use their restrooms to shoot up drugs. We were just three totally regular customers, more than willing to shop around and buy something (and maybe even post a positive review of the store), until we were inconvenienced and embarrassed by this store's ridiculous policies. read more

Bathroom scandal 2022. We were on a road trip when our pregnant friend unexpectedly got morning sickness. We found Freight Antiques and what we thought was going to be a delightful little treat for us but we were wrong. We were in line to order when our pregnant friend used the bathroom. This is when all HELL broke loose. The lady behind the counter LOST HER MIND. She was livid the girl who used the bathroom before our friend let her in without the staffs permission. The lady banged on the door and shamed our friend in the bathroom WHO WAS PREGNANT - stating that (and I quote): "your emergency is not my problem." And that we should have "planned better." Truly disgusting behavior. Safe to say we left without giving them a flippin' dime. If you have pee, stop in and stress them out. Tell them the Pregnant lady and crew sent you. read more

I have never been made to feel so uncomfortable by an establishment as I was today. I was waiting outside the bathroom because it was locked and someone was using it. When she walked out, I walked in. The person who worked at the store comes to the bathroom 2 minutes later and started banging on the door, yelling that I shouldn't be in there. When I came out she continued to scold me, saying that things are being flushed down the toilet that shouldn't be. Another man who worked there was also yelling about keeping people out of the bathroom. It was incredibly bizarre. read more

Entitled, pathetic, bitter staff. For somewhat of a struggling business (because what succeeding business has a contribution box?, but thats besides the point), you would imagine this family has more appreciation and care for potential customers, but no. I was so excited to take my grandmother to a new antique shop for my late summer visit but was quickly regretful when she needed to go to the restroom and came back looking for me to "contribute" in order for her to be able to alleviate herself. When I had asked what she meant by that(??), she further explained they had denied her access unless she paid for anything we were looking at or contributed to the store??? I obviously contributed to let my grandmother use their closet size restroom, but immediately decided to leave whatever we had in our hands and have a better time shopping at another antique shop just down the street!! I will admit it wasn't as nicely themed as they have their bar here but had a much better experience and gratitude for our antique finds after shopping and buying from the other one!! Upon reading older reviews, I've come to find they're simply miserable towards any and everybody :-D even dogs, service animals at that!!! If you plan to have an adventurous day. avoid this place to your own benefit. You'll probably find better deals, cuter finds and lovely staff ANYWHERE ELSE. But here. We have stopped at the Freight House several times traveling from central New York to the Boston area over the past 10 years. We have bought a few things and have always enjoyed the hermit bar cookies. We usually ask to use the restroom seeing this is the midpoint of our trip. We don't mind that they require you to purchase something to use the bathroom. However, today we paid for our hermit bars and iced tea, my wife was given the code. I had to hold her purse and jacket before she was allowed to enter. The woman behind the counter was staring at me and told the man there that he needed to close the bathroom saying she can not believe how rude people are all the while looking at me. Finally I said look we will never come in there again and she told me good they don't want us coming in to use the bathroom. I explained that we always stop if they are open and have really enjoyed food and beverages over the years. At that point my wife came out of the bathroom and we left. I sure did not dare to tell that I had to go too. I held it until Stewarts in Bennington where I used the bathroom and bought gas, coffee and pizza. My conclusion is that if you would like to enjoy your stop at the Freight House whatever you do. Do not ask to use the bathroom!!! read more

As a vegetarian I was eager to try this restaurant, but their hours are limited. Finally with the arrival of fall foliage season they were open until 5:00. I arrived at 4:24 and went inside. One of the waitresses told me and other people entering at the same time we couldn't sit down on one of the stools because they were closing soon and she wanted to start wiping down the counters. This was probably the most off putting experience I've had at a store. The staff insisted we all order and pay before my friend could use their bathroom. If you don't want to forget that times are hard right now, this is the place to be constantly reminded of the fact by their pessimistic, cranky, and downright depressing staff. Freight house is a great little stop when traveling on the Mohawk trail (Hway 2). There is a sizeable antique collection, which includes some eclectic items. What's really neat about the stop however is a beautiful snack counter that offers everything from lobster rolls to home made gluten free chocolate chip cookies. These cookies were actually so good that I tried to go back twice on the same day (alas, the FH closes by 4pm). Overall, if you're traveling on the beautiful Hway 2, you will not find a more convenient and delicious stop as the Freight House. read more

Well, the food was good but the place totally turned me off with rude signage and no apologies or concern when a shelf of Coke cans collapsed right next when a little girl was playing around with it and soaked me. Being from Massachusetts I had never heard of Erving until I decided to visit Vermont one sunny July day. I had passed the Freight House and saw they sold Ice cream. I decided to go there on my way back home. I did just that to find a quirky place with lots of stuff. All kinds of stuff! From large industrial items and tools to delicate glass and a wide variety of art and antiques. I did feel that the majority of the antiques were overpriced but that is not what I was there for. I ordered a large mocha frozen yogurt in a bowl with a cone. it was so packed that the cone and a scoop fell on the floor and they replaced it free of charge. They also has a wide array of delectable looking baked goods from cookies and brownies to pies. Next time I am headed to or from vermont I will be sure to stop into the Freight House to refresh and cool down read more

We stopped here because we needed a place to eat coming home from a vacation in Vermont. It was just what we needed! The food was as sooooo good,and very warm and the people here were really nice. We also got some blueberry pie with ice cream and a maple bar. It was really good and the pie was very hot in the ice cream kept cold for a long time. The only kind of weird thing about it was the room all the way in the back was super cold and it had a weird, creepy doll head but otherwise it was a really good place to stop at on the way home. Are you hungry and in the mood to antique? Well then this place will meet all your needs! This unique Cafe & antique shop definitely has a little bit of something for everyone. It is packed full of antiques ranging from delicate pieces to tons of wood items in there upstairs loft area. The prices here we're a little high for the antiques but the staff here seemed reasonable in discussing prices. When it comes to the food I didn't have the chance to try it out but seeing the line waiting to order gave some hope to the quality. The one thing I can say is that it smelled delicious while passing through. In the end this is definitely an interesting place and one that I will have to visit again in the future not only for the sales items but also to finally try out their food. read more

I've passed this place a million times and I'd always been curious. Today we were nearby and my kid (7) needed to use the bathroom so we stopped. It's January. There was a pretty aggressive sign outside the front door stating that the restroom was no longer available and customers could use the sani can outside. OK, that's fine. I walk in and ask for the key and my husband is going is going to buy a cup of coffee, and the woman behind the counter goes to get the key and says they "normally don't do this", I guess she meant allow folks to use the portapotty before buying something!? It was so rude, I honestly couldn't find a way to keep being pleasant, so we left, we did not buy anything, we did not use the portapotty. Also for the record my family is usually pretty good about also buying a pastry or two plus coffees when we stop somewhere, we're not mooches. I am glad my kid could hold it until we made it to a restroom. I'm glad we stopped so at least now I know this place and these people are terrible. Never again. read more

We were driving from Brattleboro to Boston and getting very hungry. I resisted searching for something on the phone saying, "Let's just see if we stumble across something." I knew quite well that since I'm vegan & gluten free that this approach might mean my lunch would be limited to a double order of homefries, but "oh, well." Freight House turned out to be an oasis in the desert so to speak. Great food, especially vegan & gluten free, at the little lunch counter! I had a vegan tempeh reuben on gf bread and a cup of vegan homemade chili! That was topped off by a vegan gf chocolate/peanut butter cookie. My spouse had a big bowl of the chili w/a great piece of corn bread, and I forget what she had for dessert. We felt very lucky that we had stumbled upon this restaurant! read more

This is my favorite spot on Route 2. This store has blossomed into a short stop at a repurposed train station to a MUST STOP. It just keeps being more fun & funky. I've brought friends there who enjoyed themselves immensely. We each bought something small and special. My family knows we're stopping in -now for the scones, tea, or something else from the lunch counter. Plus a neat item for me. Maybe from the sculpture garden, maybe from the big jar of marbles, it depends on the season. It's a great place in a small town center. In a 30 MPH zone. So please, you are driving along the Mohawk Trail, especially if it's inclement weather: if they are open, I'm pulling in. I'll use my "blinka". However be aware we were in Greenfield when we looked it up on yelp and gps took us to a location in Greenfield so we had to renavigate. I wish i could have bought something. Im an avid buyer and did buy at every other antique shop we stopped at yesterday but everything i wanted was overpriced. So incredibly rude. I wanted to purchase a blown glass ornament, went up to the counter and the two women were to busy talking to themselves to even turn around and notice me. So I put it back. Then my son wanted a brownie from their counter, so again we waited for them to notice us. When they turned around and saw us one woman said "oh did you want something?" So I asked her for a "brownie please." She rolled her eyes and got one out of the container, then said "that'll be $3.75". So I gave her the money and said thank you, again not even a response. I thought small town, local places were supposed to be polite, I drive through here all the time and won't stop again. read more

Freight House is a regular stop on the way to rock climbing at Farley Ledge. They have a never-ending collection of collectibles, records, vintage toys, and trinkets. There are back rooms and a cool creepy upstairs section with even more stuff. I got hooked up with a Fisher Price xylophone there - you know, the ones with a string that roll along the floor. They also serve vegetarian food, snacks, and coffee at a cute little bar inside the shop. EXCELLENT cookies! read more

You can get very good food in this area at this price , don't have to come here to spend your money. The worst is the carrot cake, you just taste sugar sugar and sugar. What a special find! On our way from Boston to Mass MoCa, we came upon this gem just as we were needing a bite. We ordered the chili with cornbread which was very tasty, but then had to try the berry scone as Cooks Country published the recipe. Very good! Just slightly sweet. What a cute place! The cafe has very simple but tasty food. The sandwiches and paninis are both good, but what really makes the place shine are the baked goods. The scones are great! It's otherwise located in a massive antique shop with a truly overwhelming amount of stuff, ranging from home the typical knick-nacks to home goods and entire rows of old hardware. It's a cute spot, and definitely worth a visit. read more
