That was in June....I just opened the shawls as the weather has and one of the is badly damaged There is a large tear and six holes close to the tear. This was the first and last time. This is my go-to place for dry cleaning. Quick, easy service and they are able to have things ready however quickly you need it. I like that the cleaning is done there, downstairs. They do a really good job as my garments always come back looking really nice and well-taken care of. Price is reasonable and what I'd expect for dry cleaning. It's also super convenient that they do alterations because one time I was dropping something off for dry cleaning that had a loose button so they were able to fix the button for me too! These are the professionals I would trust with whatever you need cleaned--I've brought them gowns, work uniforms/white coats, professional clothing, dresses, and my family has brought in talit--all of which come out looking great. We needed 13 panels of floor-to-ceiling lined curtains to be cleaned and pressed and rehung. John from The French Cleaners came to our house and removed the curtains for us, which was a big help. Three weeks later he returned with immaculate curtains that hung like they were new. The results are magnificent, and the fact we did not have to take them down or put them up was a relief. This place is awesome! I was in town to meet up with a friend and the pull to the zipper on my purse broke off. I could not get it open and my keys were inside! I came in and was greeted by a super friendly guy who brought my bag in the back. They managed to get the zipper open and free my keys in less than a minute. They did this for free and with a really friendly attitude. I feel bad I don't live nearby so I can't give them business but wanted to let others know that this a great business that did a favor for someone who just came in off the street. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I rarely dry clean- hello, so expensive in general!- but I sometimes encounter a stain that I can't handle. This time, it was an ivory tunic top that I am in love with but had stored next to a red shirt and the red shirt bled onto it all over the place. I tried oxy clean I tried bleach. No dice. I tried to buy a new one- they don't make the exact shirt anymore- you know, when you love a top... I finally decided as a last ditch effort to bring it to Frenchs. The girl at the counter empathized with me but said no promises and also warned of potential extra spotting charges as a heads up. I got a text 4 days later that it was ready and it was like new!! I took a few basic white T-shirts there, which they counted as a jersey and quoted me for one (without my knowledge) because it deserved "special attention". I was surprised at the significant increase in price but didn't mind paying if it was a job well done. come to find out the shirt isn't well cleaned. I should start by saying I don't have a ton of experience with alterations or dry cleaning in the area, so I don't have a lot to compare to. However, I will say that this place seems expensive. I've had 2 bridesmaids dresses hemmed there - hemming being the only alteration - and it was $65-$75 per dress. That said, they did an excellent job; they were extremely thorough with the measuring during my fitting, and it showed in the final product. I also had a dress dry cleaned there, and it seemed expensive as well - almost $20 for one cocktail dress. Again, they did a nice job of pressing it. Pricing aside, the staff are also not the friendliest. On my first visit, I got some attitude from one of the employees because they couldn't find my dress. Turns out they entered my information wrong. In a nutshell, I don't think I'd use this place regularly, but they are worth the money for special occasions. read more

Wow. Seriously...just wow. I have taken my clothes to many cleaners over the years, and I've never had the expereince I had at French Cleaners. They actually looked at my clothes and were *gasp* careful with them. I brought in a brand new silk shirt with unique buttons. They called after I left, and suggested that for $5, they would removed the buttons, so as not to stain the shirt, or damage the buttons, and then they sewed the buttons back on. Also, when you get your clothes back, there are no pins, no tags, no bits of paper that you have to take out. Small, I know, but just another indication that they actually take CARE with their cleaning. As other reviewers have said, it is not cheap. I don't believe they have discount coupons either. But if you have clothes that you care about, bring them to French Cleaners. read more

Hmmm, you fill out a profile asking for your preferences (they didn't follow it, my shirts came on hangers not boxed). Hmmm, well maintained, spacious, tidy facilities? (Nope. Tight squeeze in and out the front door, disorganized lobby, generally shabby.) Hmmm, clothes clean. Yep. At least they got the basics right. Honestly i would give them zero stars if i can. We used to get out pants hemmed in ny when we lived there for 12 dollars but this place charges 25 dollars.. Insane much? They've worked wonders on stains for me as well. They also do alterations and repairs. They fixed a nasty moth hole for me in a favorite wool sweater too. I brought my veil here before my wedding for a cleaning/steam and repair of a small rip around the edge. When I got it back there was a stitched up rip right in the center of my chapel length veil that I had never seen before. I took it back and the general manager was very nice and offered everything under the sun to try and fix it or replace it. But I was a little overwhelmed and busy so they just made me whole again and offered to do anything to fix it in the future. read more

I'm picky about dry cleaning and I chose French Cleaners because it looked like a solid establishment. It's certainly quite expensive - $3.25 per shirt and $10 to press trousers is steep - but paying a bit extra for quality isn't unreasonable. For the first year or so I had no gripes. It's an orderly operation, shirts are tagged with a discreet bar code and given a description (color, design) in their database. The staff won't win any awards for being friendly but they're generally pretty efficient. They close at 6 *promptly* and will completely ignore you if you show up at the door after they've locked it. They've done it to me and I've seen them do it to others, some sort of "hey, we're closed" hand gesture through the window might be a good idea? It sounds trivial but in the past 6-8 months I've noticed a dramatic rise in shirts that are returned with broken or damaged buttons. I mentioned my concern on a recent visit and was told buttons get old, crack, and fall apart. It definitely felt like a brush-off but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, said "OK", and left it at that. Last week I put on a 5 month old shirt and noticed one of the buttons on the cuff was cracked, surely not a matter of age. Clearly someone doing the pressing is being pretty rough with my shirts. Summary: at $3.25 per shirt I certainly don't expect my shirts to come back damaged and it would be nice not to be so quickly dismissed when voicing concern. read more

I would give the cleaners five stars, but their tailoring department absolutely blows. I once brought in the skirt part of the suit for the back to get repaired, I was told it was repaired, brought it home and it wasn't fixed. And when I brought it back I got yelled at by a possibly polish (of some recent european descent) tailor in their back area because I must have done it myself. Except that I hadn't worn the skirt since picking it up. Another time, I brought another suit to get dry cleaned and they noticed a loose button or something like that and offered for it to get repaired (for an additional nominal charge). I ask them to do it and it doesn't get repaired. I get all of my dry cleaning done here, and it is always wonderful and prompt without fail. Obviously, this isn't the cheapest cleaner in the Hartford area; it is the *best* cleaner in the Hartford area. In fact, I have lived all over the US and this is the only dry cleaner that got it right every time. I moved away from Connecticut a year ago, and have missed this place like crazy. French Cleaners, I will never forget you. You cleaned my Junya Watanabe trench coat and returned it to me looking like it was brand new. When I brought you a coat with faceted glass buttons, you removed them, cleaned the coat, and sewed them back on. The hemming work your alterations people did for me was always neat and even. I am a professional Santa Claus and my suit cost $1,000. I interviewed one of the technicians before I left my suite to be cleaned. I was assured that they would do a great job and the Red colors would not run in to the White fur. The white fur was very soiled from the many children I dealt with. It came out Snow White! I now recommend all of my Santa friends to go there for quality service at a reasonable price. In any business "service makes the difference". There are a 5 star service! I have gone here for alterations and not dry cleaning. I have had many pants hemmed and dresses fitted here over the years, and the seamstresses do a stellar job at a reasonable price! (I have heard this place is very expensive for dry cleaning, but of the highest quality. I have not had dry cleaning done here, but I have had many alteration done, and I think they are comparably priced to other places, with great quality.) Among my most complicated alterations, I had one dress that had to be taken in throughout, the shoulders needed to be altered, and it also had a pleated front where the neck line was too low to fit me. They un-did the seams of the pleats and re-pleated them so that they ended at a higher point on the neck. You could not even tell it had been altered at all. Amazing! For 2 shirts ( normal cotton shirt) I paid $21. Service was ok, nothing really stood out for me. This was my second visit to French. The first time I was going to have a pricey winter coat cleaned and it needed a few alterations. I appreciated the knowledge of the cashier who helped me. I opted not to service the coat at that time. Last week, I brought in a pair of slacks to be hemmed and to have the buttons replaced. Again, great service. The seamstress and I looked through her button box and she had a pair I Loved,, but they were too big. She took time to keep looking and we found the same pair in a size that could fit my pants! It took about a week and the total cost was $18 which didn't seem overpriced to me. As far as turnaround, I didn't think a week was too long. Yes, I know of another seamstress who promised my pants within a few days, but I didn't really need them back that quickly. The cashier was very friendly and patient. A word of advice. When choosing a cleaner, you need to consider several things. Do you bring "a pile" or just occasional pieces? Do you tend to need things ASAP or can you wait? Is service more important or speed? Are you particular about the cleaning process? Ask these questions because in this area, you have cleaners who may fulfill one area but not the other. It's unfair to decry a business because you need things ASAP and they don't specialize in that. There are plenty of fast cleaners in the Hartford area, but I am more picky about the service and cleaning process. Again, I have had 2 great and consistent customer service experiences and I recommend. The reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is that I don't clean things often enough to say 5 stars, but I definitely plan on bringing items here in the future. read more

Absolutely horrid experience. First time trying this place and they LOST 2 of my shirts. When I went to pick up my clothes (after the week-long wait) the girl helping me said she couldn't find 2 of my items and asked if it was ok if they called me when they found them? I was in no hurry so I told them I'd wait. After 10 minutes she came back out and told me they had given my shirts to another customer by mistake and were waiting for the customer to bring them back the following week! (Had I not waited, would I have ever been told they lost the shirts?) No manager came out to explain or apologize. Instead the girl apologized for the inconvenience and offered to comp the service. I came back the day they said the shirts would be ready and they STILL didn't have them. Again, no member of management came out to apologize or explain. The fact that they didn't attempt to contact me and apologize for their mistake suggests to me that situations like this occur regularly, and customer service is not a priority for them. I will not be returning here and I would not recommend it to anyone else. read more

They did a fine job with my dress coat, my husbands suit and alterations on a dress. Not sure it was worth the price though, and my dress wasn't ready at my requested time. Their staff is the real reason for the 2 stars. Christina/Christine in particular was incredibly unpleasant to work with. It was as if I was the biggest inconvenience to her. I could tell she didn't want to help me and her attitude showed it. I would absolutely never go back to French Cleaners or recommend them to anyone I know because of her horrible attitude. There was an older woman who helped me the last time I went in to pick up my dress and she was very sweet, but it's not enough to change my mind. You know your staff needs an overhaul when your customer dreads having to come pick up their clothes because your employees are so miserable to deal with. I guess a lot of people reviewing don't understand that theres a separate place on yelp indicating price, as almost all the negative ones have to do with cost. Yes, it is expensive. But thats what you pay for nicer things, as if you were going to an expensive restaurant, you'd expect better than average food, right? No lies here, it has three dollar signs so yes, it costs more than average. The service is better than average as well. I'm wildly irresponsible and have taken my suits here on 3 different occasions in need of 24 hour service. They have always delivered, and the suits come back looking like they've never been worn before. Would I use this place to get my clothes cleaned for every day work? Probably not. Ive brought a few things in over the years for alterations, and they were done well. However, about a year ago, I brought a coat over to be taken in, and before I even tried it on, the seamstress told me it was "impossible" to alter and then said it looked fine on when I tried the coat on- swimming on me. Not wanting to get rid of it, I kept it in my closet. Recently, in New York (near my parents home), I decided to bring it in as one last ditch effort, and am glad I did. The coat now fits perfectly. I am thinking that perhaps this spot is good for simpler alterations. However, the quick dismissiveness of the work left me feeling that I will look elsewhere for a dry cleaner as well. I took a small Coach wristlet in here for cleaning after spilling red wine ALL OVER it. I had read on Yelp that they were expensive but good and I was willing to pay the price if they could get all the wine out. As it turns out it wasn't expensive at all! At least in my opinion. It was around $25 to clean and let me tell you this bag looked AWFUL when it went in and it came out looking PERFECT. I could not believe it.
