We were visiting and exploring Steens Mountain for a week and stayed in a BLM Campground on the mountain. We decided for a break from camp food we would try the Frenchglen Hotel for a dinner. We made reservations, and showed up at 6:30 for the family style dinner. You get what they are serving for the evening. If your a picky eater, this is not the place for you. The place was full and the dinner was superb. We had a roasted Brussel sprout salad to begin the meal, then the entree was a pork pot pie that was excellent. Then for desert there was cake with a lemon butter cream frosting. Libations consist of soft drinks or tea, coffee or lemonade, so if you want alcohol it's bring you own wine or beer. We then decided to come back the next night. We made reservations and returned and the second night was just as good or better than the first, with a multi berry cobbler that was excellent. This place serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and if your in the area, which is a little out of the way, I would highly recommend you stop. read more

I've been to this charming hotel three times, and each time has been better than the last. The ambiance is peaceful, the family-style dinners are delicious, and the staff is friendly. A couple of the staff members even played live music for us on the porch in the evening! As a person with dietary restrictions, finding safe places to eat is often a source of stress. This is the only place to stay in the area. It's a great little place. The beds were only a full and I could have used a bigger bed. You might ask about a bigger bed if you stay out here. The breakfast was amazing! The lunch Menu is meh. Dinner is amazing again! Dinner is usually chefs choice so you won't know what it is until dinner time. Desert is served with dinner. I would recommend the mile or so walk down to the old settlers cabin across the street. If you want alcohol they have beers in the fridge downstairs, but I recommend bringing a bottle of whatever you like from a cheaper place. The mercantile down the street sells soda and beer. I also recommend hanging out in a rocking chair drinking coffee in the morning on the screened in porch, the sunrise is particularly great! We would definitely stay here again if we were back in the area. Also know there are a couple of shared bathrooms so be ready for no bathroom in your room. read more

We had a week to explore the Hart Mt Antelope Refuge / Steens Mts and even though it was still a bit cold and rainy this week , the sun came out every day & we were able to get out to the Malheur Refuge for some gorgeous drives. We traveled here with friends and because of the Pandemic we had to stay in the rooms in the hotel behind this Historic hotel. Rooms are basic, but everything you need is included: clean, comfortable beds, hot water for showers with amenities for showering, fresh coffee in the morning, and relaxing porch to reminisce about the days activities. Be sure and bring bug spray as the mosquitos were out in hives!!! The French glen Hotel offers breakfast in the morning, they made us lunches to go, and every night we dined with their dinner. You need to order lunch and dinner in advance. The dinner is selected for you and both nights it was DELICIOUS. By the way...this is the only hotel and the only restaurant in town...so plan accordingly. read more

Beautiful place. We stayed at the cabins behind the hotel. It was very nice setting if you're interested in birdwatching & nature. The bed wasn't very comfortable last night and the room is very small. But the dinner last night was excellent and the French toast this morning was very good. This hotel is an absolute gem!! We went camping on Steens mt and got rained out and we were lucky enough to get into rooms at the hotel. This hotel is very quaint, built in 1923 with a huge screened in front porch, cozy rooms, shared showers, and an amazing restaurant. As I mentioned above, the hotel was built in 1923 so you won't be getting a room at the Hilton (duh). The rooms are super cute with plenty of outlets, closet with extra pillows, window unit air conditioners, chair in the corner, a side table with light, and about 3 feet on all sides of the bed that fit my backpack with plenty of room to walk around. Our room even had wood paneling on the walls and ceiling, super cute! There is a men and women's shower for the rooms upstairs, we didn't have any issues getting a shower. They provided soap and towels. The women's shower room had shampoo. The dinner was absolutely amazing!! It was at 6:30 pm and included baked ham, peas, gourmet Mac n cheese, homemade buns, and a really fresh salad. Dessert was marionberry cobbler and vanilla ice cream, delicious! We brought our own wine and paid a $5 corkage fee. But they had wine, beer, and cider that you could buy with dinner. The manager clearly makes a great effort to get the best beverages and food for the restaurant. We were at the same table as the fire fighting crew from NM, and it was really fun doing a family style dinner with them. There were two families with kids at the other table and we all chatted back and forth. After dinner we played a card game on the front porch with the manager! This hotel is the perfect launch pad for going up to Steens Mt to see Kigel Gorge or heading down to the Alvord Desert. There's also a little market next door that has gas, but be sure to gas up in Hines or Burns since the Frenchglen market may be closed at times. I highly recommend this place, it is a fantastic establishment. It's well run, has very friendly and welcoming staff, and was a great way for us to end our trip. I had to get fuel in French Glenn. There are three visible business in town and a few houses. The town is remote and beautiful! I visited the mercantile first to get gas "the reason I came to French Glenn. The lady was super nice and they had a decent selection compared to most of these nomad towns. The Mercantile was not listed in yelp. Then I ventured in to the hotel because they had a lunch sign on the building. I asked for s turkey sandwich to go. The lady was very nice and fast. Looks like a wonderful place I may take my wife to one day. Now back to hunting the Steens. read more

There are FTRs. And then there is the Frenchglen Hotel. It's simply too good to pass up. Why? Ever heard of Steens Mountain? The world's most awesome snow-covered fault block mountain (elevation 9733 ft.) at the edge of the Alvord Desert? Well, near the base of Steens, there lies a little hotel, in a time that is not your own time. It has a special rhythm. Not slower, exactly. Just a little less intense. From the screened porch, you can heard coyotes howl, insects sing, and birds flutter in the wind. You'll enjoy family-style meals to feed a horse, and then some. And all around is dark, open, wide starry sky, with Steens always on the Eastern horizon. The full moon will haunt you. You don't just stumble upon Frenchglen, OR (population 89). You have to seek it out. It's off the beaten path. It marches to the beat of a different drummer. It is its own little universe. And that's a very good thing. Trust the birds. Listen to your inner spirit. Find Steens on the horizon. Trace a path through your heart. When you can go no further, stop. You'll find yourself in Frenchglen. Let me say right up front, that if you are okay with sharing a bathroom with 16 people, and sleeping on a double ( not a Queen or king size bed) you can skip this review. The Frenchglen hotel is owned by the State of Oregon and is run by a Concessionaire- meaning someone who is paid to run the hotel. The staff is friendly and the food is basic, and plentiful ( pork chops and roast beef). French glen is gateway to the Steens Mountain wilderness and is extremely remote. The hotel has no television, WIFI and very limited cellphone reception. That is fine if you are prepared for it. Taken together, I wouldn't give the place such a low rating for this alone. I view a decent bed and bathing facilities as basic amenties for someplace calling itself a hotel. The better term would be French Glen Hostel, because that is what the experience is- a hostel- communal dining, bathing and paper thin walls. Again, if you are looking for a hostel it is a beautiful place and very rustic. If you are looking for hotel accommodations this is not the place for you . read more

Driving home after staying at the Alvord Hot Springs, we drove up the West side back home. We did stop for lunch here at this hotel. It was ok. It was nice to have some real food. I had the egg salad sandwich and potato salad. The sandwich was ok, for being out in the middle of nowhere, and the potato salad was good. We also picked up a yummy pecan chocolate chip cookie for the road! The lady there was very nice. Menu has a lot of meat options for those who like meat. Nice little cute hotel. I am a huge fan of preserving history so staying at this historic site is right up my alley. The food was fresh and amazing and i love the historic feel of the rooms. My only complaint is i am allergic to lavender so i could do without the lavender soap in the bathrooms. But that is a very small complaint. Loved my experience and would come again. read more

Convivial and Hospitable The Frenchglen is an old hotel that is owned by the state and kept, as well as possible, in an old-fashioned state. It's located in a lovely area that appeals to birders and other nature enthusiasts. So talk at dinner is usually about what you might have spotted on your outing for the day. Staff is very friendly. The breakfast and dinner served in the small dining room was always very tasty with copious amounts served family-style Rooms are small and pretty basic. Bathroom is down-the-hall but that was never a problem. My only complaint is that there isn't a decent sitting area in the place. The front porch is comfortable at mid-day, but it's only screened, so it gets cold in the evening. The dining area is primarily large tables with benches and not conducive for sitting and reading and relaxing. Overall, we really enjoyed the place and we would happily return. read more

Half of our group stayed in the rustic, historic hotel. The other half stayed in the newer Grover's hotel (a few steps away from the historic hotel). We all enjoyed the wonderful dinner and breakfast. So delicious! Food is served family style. Plates of food are passed around, and you're welcome to have seconds (or thirds) of the wonderful home cooked food. In the evening, we sat on the grass and looked up at millions of stars in the sky. 21 members of our outdoor group spent 4 nights here. We had a wonderful time. John & his staff could not have been more accommodating. We stayed in both the historic hotel & the Drovers where each of 5 units has it's own bath. The food was amazing. Our group had some special dietary needs which were met. Call ahead to request this accommodation as it depends on available staffing. Ornithologist Duncan, out of the Field Station at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge,gave us a wonderful tour. I think some on our group will now become birders. You can pick up a CD at the Refuge ( as well as other area locations) for an audio guide to help you spot wildlife. We saw coyote, mule deer, blue heron, wild horses,...This is an ideal location for exploring the Steens Mt, the Alvord desert & soaking in one of several hot springs in the area. Have fun! read more

HAVING TO SHARE TWO BATHROOMS WITH 16 PEOPLE IS NOT CHARMING!!! The 8 bedrooms are very small with just a regular bed and no room even to open your suitcase. The worst part is that you have to share the hall bathrooms, one for men and one for women. Waiting to get a chance to take a shower or go to the bathroom, especially during the night is not fun. They charge $26 each for dinner. It is prepared okay but there is no choice of considerations for food allergies, intolerances or diets for medical reasons ie diabetes or needing a low fat diet. The mosquitoes are outrageous and there doesn't seem to be any attempt to deter them. They don't even burn citranella candles. Steens Mountain is worth seeing, but I recommend you stay in a bigger town, such as Burns and drive down to see the mountain instead of sharing with 8 people so you can pee. Also, other that seeing the mountain, there is nothing else to do there. The mosquitoes, flies and millions of little flying bugs makes hiking around the mountain very unpleasant. Most of the people there seemed to be into bird watching. There were only a few guests under 65. We are retired, but we like to spend time with all ages of people. This place had the feel of a retirement home. Yuk. read more
