Plantain chips...see this a lot in this supermarket
    Jo H.

I recently learned that Southeastern Grocers, Winn-Dixie's parent company, decided to open many Fresco y Mas supermarkets in Miami and Broward County mainly to cater to the Hispanic population in South Florida. Located in the Hollywood Festival Plaza, Fresco y Mas Supermarket, which means Fresh and More, (formerly was Winn-Dixie) is large and clean with organized aisles which are visibly labeled in both English and Spanish. The vibe in the supermarket is very laid-back. You can find such things such as produce, beer & wine, grocery, frozen items, packaged meats, baby & pet care, health & beauty, etc.; as well as various departments such as butcher/seafood, bakery, and a cafeteria where you can get hot prepared Latin foods. There is a slight similarity to Winn-Dixie, but Fresco y Mas offers more traditional Hispanic prepared foods, produce, products, and familiar brands for Latin American cooking at affordable prices. Things like tres/cuatro leches, flan, Cuban crackers, maltas, malanga, plantain/yuca chips, Cuban/Puerto Rican bread, and many more. The employees are pleasant. For the time being, you can use your Plenti card, but in July, a new rewards card will be issued to customers where you can still use points on groceries at the checkout and the card can be used at not only Fresco y Mas, but at Winn-Dixie, Harvey's and Bi-Lo supermarkets. Me encanta Fresco y Mas y voy a estar de vuelta...translation: I love Fresco Y Mas and I will be back.

They've got everything--clothing, greenery, and the friendliest, most "hello, neighbor" people you could imagine. It's a delightful, slightly overwhelming place to spend a family afternoon. But let's talk about the main event, the undisputed heavyweight champion of our visit: the Llanera wood-fire meat. We saw the fire, we smelled the delicious smoke, and like two people who hadn't eaten in a geological era, we ordered the Family Feast. "That's a nice amount of food," my friend said, innocently. "We can share this," I agreed, a fool's words if ever they were uttered. Friends, that wasn't a feast; it was a food pyramid carved out of pure, smoky, perfectly cooked meat. I'm pretty sure they wheeled a whole cow out on a hand truck. For under $70, we were given enough wood-fire protein to sustain a small village for the winter, or at least my family for the next week. We ate until we couldn't feel our toes. We ate until the concept of "full" became a distant, theoretical state. And yet, when we packed up, we were still left with a terrifying, beautiful mountain of meat. I'm currently using the leftovers to make llanera-based tacos, llanera-based chili, and I think I saw my dog eyeing a slice for a llanera-based dog biscuit. If you like incredible, flavorful, wood-fire meat and you hate the idea of cooking for yourself for the foreseeable future, run, don't walk. Just make sure you bring a car with an empty trunk for all the leftovers. Highly recommend!

Campo Meat is a boutique meat shop offering specialty cuts from steak, pork, lamb, sausages, and much more. I ended up purchasing a 30 day dry-aged Wagyu Rib Eye. Recommended by the shop clerk Katerina, who was extremely helpful in my selection. Not to mention the hospitality.. I was greeted warmly and offered an espresso while browsing, which I indulged. A nice touch! Not the cheapest, but you are paying for QUALITY. Definitely, cheaper buying it here than going out to a restaurant! That's for sure. I would recommend a visit for anyone who's a big meat eater and wants to treat themselves or their partners to a special dinner. I am certain my buddy will be pleased with the steak I got him for his birthday! They even have a point system every time you shop there. I know I will be back! 5 stars all the way.
