I would give this butcher NO STARS if at all possible-- avoid at all costs.
I walked in a week ago and asked the owner, who calls himself Ray, where he got his meat from and how long he'd been there. He said respectively, Smithfield and that he'd been there 28 years and it was a family business (more on that later). Ray and I had a chat. I told him-- I know my meat. I said-- I will be back to try some cuts.
And I did go back and the second time I was served by a woman with dirty blonde hair tied back in a ponytail without a hair net-- all good butcher workers with long hair should have a hair net. This flag should have warned me!
I bought some 'steak mince', two chicken breasts and some ribeye minute steaks.
When I got everything home, I quickly realised the 'steak mince' was not even beef mince but clearly meat of --scarily enough-- unidentifiable origin and taste!!! Once I cooked it , I soon realised-- it wasn't lamb, it wasn't pork and it probably had never even seen a cow!!! Except perhaps the woman who worked there and sold me the stuff in the first place.
The chicken breasts-- I asked what weight they were-- she said 180g, thereabouts. They weighed 120g each.
The ribeye. I asked for Scotch beef. For some obscure reason, right in front of me, she gave me English. At the time I did not complain because the Scotch was massively more expensive-- which I didn't mind paying but I thought, oh well I'll save money. The minute steaks were the stringiest and chewiest I've ever had. read more
