I seem to be spending a lot of time in St. Paul (shhh, I don't want to lose my Mpls street cred)…read more This time it was to take an out of town cousin out for breakfast. Even though I had never been to the Colossal Cafe, they seemed to be just what we wanted. The cute cafe (Grand Ave location) is a cozy place and it was easy to find street parking around the corner, not far from the front entrance. We were able to snag a table by the window, so it was also great for people watching. My cousin ordered tea and I ordered coffee and I was pleased that they came by frequently offering refills. The service was helpful, cheerful and friendly, perfect for showing my New York cousin, what "Minnesota Nice" is all about. The food was excellent. I had the bacon, green onion and cream cheese omelet ($16) which I really enjoyed. I also enjoyed the toast with a side of orange marmalade. The omelet was well made (not always the case when I order at a restaurant) and the ingredients they added gave it a cravable taste. In fact, I was so impressed with this combination, I made it at home the following weekend. My cousin had the Greek Frittata ($15.50) with grilled marinated artichoke, spinach, green onion, feta and tomato. She thoroughly enjoyed it. Although the total a bit on the tad on the high side for breakfast ($45.88 before tip) this was a great place to have breakfast, chill, and talk.

I love the authentic cafe vibe in here: cozy, simplistic diner basics like counter stools and booths. The place is adorned with drawings from kids and adults alike showing love for the Uptowner - so cool. I ordered some breakfast classics: hashbrowns, bacon, eggs, etc - and WOW the meal was delish. The hashbrowns were perfection! My service was great - the one server holding things down was so kind and efficient. I love diners where you can see the chef griddling right in front of you. A man in need came in towards the end of my visit, and the waitress provided him with a cup of coffee to warm up - I chose to pay for his coffee, but it's these little acts of kindness from restaurant teams that show why restaurants are the heart of our community. Thank you!

The walls are decorated with hand drawn pictures (from patrons?). You are not coming here for upscale esthetic beauty - but the food is very good and you come here because you know what you are going to get. The server was nice and she topped of my coffee after picking up my to go meals. We tried the Tex Mex, The Hacksaw and Eggs Benedict breakfast specials. All three were large portioned and delicious.

The patio allows dogs. In addition, there is a dog menu! What?! The service is always prompt and I have never had issues getting seated immediately. I believe the employees used to be part of recovery but I'm not sure if that stands true today. The vibe is whimsical and I have only ever ordered breakfast here. Therefore, I can't speak towards the lunch items. Contrary, all breakfast items hit the spot. Recently I've been enjoying the earth breakfast which is two scrambled eggs in hashbrowns with onion and covered in cheddar cheese, served with toast. The portions are large and the prices are reasonable. I've never ordered the cinnamon roll or caramel roll but I do see them in the pastry case all the time and they look phenomenal. I look forward to returning more! Thank you, Day by Day Cafe. You have a great business.

Every booth has a little lamp light and just a nostalgic, cozy feeling. I ended up having a breakfast burrito with fruit and it was just perfect. It wasn't an overstuffed burrito and just delicious. Also, great fruit selection, not just (nasty) cantaloupe. The restaurant also has a great mission, helping those in need get on the right path. Would definitely stop in to support that alone. The food and friendliness is just a bonus.

Food 5/5: I got the grandmas house latte and an everything bagel with garlic and herb cream cheese. The latte was well blended and overall very smooth. Service 5/5: overall the staff was efficient and friendly Ambiance 5/5: the vaulted ceilings yet cozy aesthetic makes this place very visually pleasing. Plenty of space and tables, but hard to find a table when busy. Overall I had a great experience and will be back! A great option for a local coffee and pastry/bagel breakfast.

The service was wonderful! Everyone was so nice! When my boyfriend tried his drink, it just didn't taste right (iced vanilla latte with 4 shots of espresso) They remade it and were very apologetic! The drinks: I got an iced grandmas house with oat milk! There is no up charge for oatmilk! My wallet and stomach appreciated that! The flavor was really good! Unfortunately even with the remake, there seemed to be something off about my boyfriend's drink... I asked for them to take the vanilla out, thinking maybe be it was the syrup. But it just wasn't good. We were also hoping to get the pizza that was there but they only had slices, not a full pie. It was disappointing. Overall this is a nice coffee shop
