I would give this store 5 stars for the wonderful variety of food they have. I'm always impressed with even the abundance of gluten free selections they have. But, here is my one complaint-the bathrooms. Because I come from far away I often have to use their bathroom and it is an eyesore. Garbage piled up everywhere, on the floor. The sanitary napkin disposal is always busting the seems with toilet paper falling out of it. If they can't keep the bathrooms tidy and clean on a daily basis it makes me wonder how they deal with the cleanliness of the rest of the store? read more

Some of the sales folks can be exceedingly rude and disagreeable, despite how nice you are to them. The prices are very high. Many items are close to or over the "Best if used by" date. Filthy restroom. Very often out of the tote bags that you buy if you forget to bring one. Not the most fun place in the world to shop in but it's the only game in town, so they get away with it. That sucks. I long for the days when we had both AP and The Victory Markets to shop in. That kept them both on their toes. read more

Over priced ! I only go here if I really have to for one or two things I may have forgotten else where. Watch for expiration dates Not uncommon to find expired meats and dairy. I've seen things in the meat counter that expired days ago.! The deli counter here is horrible to say the least. I dread needing something here. Employees act like they are doing you a favor!!! They need a crash course in customer service !!! They go to lunch and close the counter down. Product is okay, stick with named brands. There are a few cashiers that are old timers and very pleasant. They go out of their way to be helpful. That's the only asset this place has. I hope management treats them well. I have been coming here since the days of the A&P that's more than fifty years. Sadly over the last few years this place had gone down hill ! And the biggest travesty is that it is the only supermarket in town so seniors and anyone that does not drive are stuck. read more

So fresh - This little grocery store puts me in an ol' timey Grand Union frame of mind. Smaller yet high quality selection. Deli and prepared foods include some surprising gourmet items. The beer selection and "Mix 6" options, truly impressive. Service was the normal NY level of customer tolerance (c'mon, you already have friends, who needs more?) Prices are a bit higher, but nowhere near "Convenience" store level gouging. Approved! + where else are you going to go up here?! read more

I have been a Freshtown customer for many years, great staff and range of products, not cheap. My biggest complaint about the deli is the enormous use of fatty mayonnaise in its "salads" in the show case ....there are options: reduce the use of mayo, or use low fat mayo that is also lower in sugar an salt...will taste the same and be more healthy....caring counts for sure FT, plus less mayo will make the salads, tuna and chicken salads et al much tastier and better....why use so much fatty mayo??? Pros: Management is very nice. Cons: Make sure to check prices and expiration dates. They don't have a system in place to check spoiled/use by dates. Several times I've driven all the way home to find expired dairy dates...too far to drive back. Prices rarely match shelf ads...double check at register before you leave. I've been going to Freshtown regularly for nearly three years. It's not inexpensive but if you have a club card and pay attention to sales it's really not bad. They have a good selection of local, organic and gluten-free products. Again, not cheap, but at least they have them. I find everyone who works here to be friendly and helpful so am surprised by so many negative reviews. Maybe try treating people that work here with respect and you'll get the same? read more

I go to the Freshtown in Margaretville NY. I go there nearly every day and have spent thousands of dollars. They VERY frequently TOO frequently over charge..They usually blame it on the computer. I go back the next day and the price has NOT been corrected. Well today, an ugly-inside young lady told me that if i did not like it I could go to a different store.....( this is why young people get a bad rap) from people like this. So then I spoke with the man in the office. He explained......as they always do....and then he said "I don't know what you want?" As if prices in this store were not high enough, I have been overcharged a number of times. Today the man I assume is the manager gave me an argument even though I did the math for him on his own calculator. Eventually, he slapped the money I was owed on the counter and stormed off. Of course, there was no apology. The man in line behind me said he has been overcharged ten times this summer and was also there for a refund. I don't know why this happens, but I do know that if I walked out of the store with an item without paying for it, I would be guilty of theft. read more

My wife and I are visiting from Maryland and used yelp to find a grocery store. Gotta be honest the reviews made this place out to be a nightmare. It's not. Are the prices a tad inflated? Sure. But being in manufacturing I realize they're shipping cost is substantially more than a store in the city. Their craft beer selection is unreal. And I'm a craft beer snob. Worst customer service ever. They have no problem stealing your money and blaming it on "card reader errors". My husband bought $60 worth of items and got charged $200 because the rude cashier did not know what she was doing and scanned several people's items after him as well. Then forget trying to talk to Michelle or Ivan the manager, because they do not know what customer service is period, nor do they deserve jobs dealing with the public. Freshtown of Margaretville, NY has great workers, and the management is helpful and courteous. It is a challenging time, to be an essential worker during this pandemic. This store tries very hard to keep the shelves stocked, and follow the CDC recommendations regarding social distancing and requiring facial masks. "No mask No service" is posted on the door. After Freshtown was closed for almost a year after the Irene flood, you sort of have to just be happy there's a grocery store in town again... despite its flaws. That said, if I lived up here full time I'd probably hate it since its pretty overpriced in general. The good: - AMAZING beer selection - Good amount of local bread/cheese/produce/etc - Staff is always friendly The bad: - Sort of overly geared toward the weekend out-of-towner with high-end choices (with the high prices to match) - Bread Alone baguettes left out until they are hard as a rock and clearly several days old (occasionally) So yeah... it's the only supermarket within many miles so it sort of is what it is. Just make sure you give your baguette a little squeeze before you pay for it. read more

Will someone please explain to me why supermarkets in depressed areas always have prices that are way higher than the supermarkets where the rich people live? What's up with that? And it's not because it's near Belleayre ski center; it ain't Vail, or even Stratton, for that matter. Still, this place is way better than the supermarket that used to be there. I guess it got renovated after that insane flood a few years ago. The food is pretty good. Check the dates on everything - those super high prices guarantee that dairy products etc. might sit for awhile. Killer beer selection. Some local products. It's the only game in town, I guess. This is a good grocery store in the middle of nowhere. I suppose that "middle of nowhere" is a little bit of an exaggeration, but it was definitely the only grocery store we saw for a long time on our excursion into the Catskills. I was impressed by the offerings: a wide selection of craft beer, insanely fresh and delectable local meats, produce, cheeses, did I mention the large beer selection? We got some ground beef and bacon from a local supplier that was absolutely divine - it was some of the best bacon I've ever eaten. I wish we had taken some home with us. I was less impressed by the prices. Everything, especially the basics, seemed a little pricey, especially compared to the grocery stores back home closer to the city. ENFORCE THE MASK RULE!!! I was there at 5:30 p.m. on June 27; store was reasonably crowded and I found myself in line with at least two people without a mask and one with the mask below her nose. It only takes one infected person to infect a whole of others. Freshtown, do what you say on the front door you're going to do -- require a mask. That means: No mask, no checkout. Signs about masks don't mean anything if you don't enforce the rule. Next time, I call the State Liquor Authority to see about yanking your license. read more

Tried shopping here years ago, Had problems at the register because the price was much higher than the advertised price on the shelf. Recieved 4 coupons from a company to replace products i bought that were bad. I went to Freshtown because i found they had the products on the web site. Was told at the register i could only use one coupon at a visit. I said show me where it says that? She went to a manager i also followed. His version was different, Oh you need to buy $40 worth of the product to use the coupns because each one is good up to $10 each. I said i need your name, he said why, i said because i am going to sue you, 5 Minutes later i had all 4 items and on my way home. I heard 3 different stories from 3 different people on this one visit. I will never go back, his place sucks. Not to mention the prices are ridiculously high. read more

I wasn't able to edit a previous review. This place is so irritating! The new fruit and veggie aisle is of course overpriced, but the stuff goes bad immediately! If anything is on sale, for sure don't buy it, you know it's bad. The bakery doesn't have bread in the morning and is often stale. Customer service is rude... The main problem with this market are the inflated prices. They know that customers do not want to drive to Kingston, 47 miles away, for the markets , so they keep their prices high. The produce is grade b or c and is quite often old and wilted. I'd rather drive to Kingston or Delhi to do my shopping. read more

This grocery store is amazing except some cashiers are rude especially to non white. I shopped there one of the Fridays on the way to our vacation house I encountered this middle aged white hair cashier who was rude. I'm Asian and i was just questioning about the price and my points she said "I don't know what you are talking about and you have to wait for the points until I asked you". Meanwhile the people around me were whites and she was all smile. At the end she even made a comment that you know it's Friday meaning People of color only comes to Margaretville on weekends . This is bad for the business especially that Freshtown is one of the best grocery store in Catskills. I hope the cashiers don't judge the customers to their race and color. I've shopped here for many years. I am pretty happy with Freshtown. Frankly, it is in a tough position as it tries to straddle the markets for locals and more affluent 2nd home owners. There are a lot of high end products not commonly found in most Catskills markets. There is the largest beer selection I've ever seen for example. I think trying to provide selection like that is expensive. Frankly, I'd rather pay for the convenience and appreciate the effort that the owners make. I guess something is better than nothing but this store is run very poorly. You can never depend on merchandise being there; produce is almost always poor quality or wilted; prices are not always posted and definitely check the register receipt because they often don't charge what is posted especially for sale items; the service desk is poorly attended as the personnel sit up in an enclosed office so don't know when anyone is there. All in all, this store is run as poorly as its predecessor A&P and we had hoped for an improvement as the renovation was promising. There is a larger selection but if you live here, you have to go to Oneonta or Kingston to shop if you can and use this store for fill-ins. read more
