So far so good! It's 2021 and we're slowly recovering from the panorama (yes, panorama lol). Inside…read moredining, theaters, and gyms are opening back up. The McKie Rec Center is no different. I recently moved into the area and heard about the weight room. I paid for a 3 month membership, which was $45 dollars. I believe this includes access to all Cincy rec centers but will need to test that out. The 45 bucks gives me access to the basketball court and the weight room. COVID SAFETY: For now, you have to call and schedule a time to go into either facility. They are keeping the number of people very low so I appreciate that since the weight room is fairly small. You must call and book a time on the hour for the hour. My only complaint is there isn't an online portal or email I can send, I have to call, and if you know me - I HATE calling anyone haha! Oh well. It's a great alternative for me when I'm not feeling like running outside. It's walking distance and opens up at 8am so I can get my morning burn before the day starts. Glad to have it available!

I think the Cinci Recreation Commission facilities are a great benefit to the city and fully…read moresupport their inclusion in the city budget, etc. Unfortunately there are a lot of things competing for the same funds, and certain communities draw the short straw. And, unfortunately, McKie suffers from that. Most of the equipment is old and beat up, but in working order. They are not open weekends, but they are open late enough on weekdays to get in a workout after work. McKie also lacks a few amenities that some of the better funded CRC centers have such as a running track. Now, those are a few of the negatives to get out of the way, and unfortunately they are things the folks at McKie just can't do anything about. Now, the good things. First off the people are really great. Everyone is very friendly, and not because they are looking at you like a walking commission. I have seen people being trained there, but I'm not sure how that is set up, definitely not in a high-pressure way. They have classes in martial arts and I think I've seen some women walking around with yoga mats. And the other big tradeoff for the gently used equipment is that an adult membership is only $25 a YEAR!! A main charge for the center seems to be the programs for area youth. I know there are regular and structured basketball times, and I've seen younger children occupying the front room doing arts and crafts projects. Also, in the summer, McKie hosts a number of day camp activities as well as swimming lessons. The front room also hosts community organizations such as the Community Council and acts as a jumping off point for things like the Great American Cleanup. So, as I mentioned, the CRC community centers are asked to do so many worthwhile things, and do them on a shoestring budget. The only reason I give this a 3 star review here is because if it had a bigger budget, I need room to go to 4 or 5.

The rest of the park is quiet. Along with the baseball field are some basketball courts. It also has a playground, so it has something for the younger children. The pavilion is good for family picnics. It has a couple of entrances. The southern entrance is located off of Madison. It's where the basketball courts are located. The northern entrance is located off of Ferns. The baseball field is there. If you want a quiet park, this is a good choice. It's a neighborhood park so there isn't usually a lot of people there, just some residents playing with their kids. This park usually is safe.

I grew up right down the street from this park so I would often visit with my parents. My family were members of the swimming pool that used to be operated here but no longer exists. Now the park just looks empty, I didn't see a soul in it when I walked through the other day. There are basketball courts and several baseball courts. There is a pavilion you can walk around inside and a playground. It seems that the playground is currently closed as there was orange caution tape around the whole thing. It looked like the monkey bars had fallen down. Even with the lack of activities in the park, it still is beautiful and has great pathways for walking around on a nice day.

Seeing as we were attending an event my review may not reflect the regular day to day operations. Another Yelper commented on the poor shape of the fields. This is no longer the case. All 4 of the fields are beautiful. Some are synthetic turf and others are the traditional dirt and grass. All around the park are fun, baseball themed signs. This park looks much more professional than most youth sports parks/ complexes. I am not sure if people are allowed to drop by and use the fields, or if they are exclusively for members. Towards the park entrance is a nice sized playground and basketball courts. Weather permitting, it would be easy to keep one child entertained while another is taking classes. Well shaded, this park would be nice to stop by even if one didn't have a reason to visit the Youth Academy. There is now an indoor training facility, complete with a field and batting cages. Several meeting rooms may also be found on the ground floor. Since everything was new it all looked great. It looks as if they are starting things slow. The brochure that was being handed out only listed classes for ages 9-18. Supposedly, the facility is for ages 5-18, but nothing is listed for ages 5-8. They may be waiting to see how things go, then add classes for the younger kids. They offer both baseball and softball instruction. From what I can tell, the only way to sign kids up to to go to the facility itself. The grand opening event included free food, games, music, & fireworks. It was a nice even for the kids. My children had lots of fun. They loved getting to bat both indoors and outside. It looked like the organizers were using this even as an opportunity to clear out t-shirts from past events. My kids each came home with several shirts; dates on the shirts ranged from 2012-2014. In the minds of my children, free shirts with the Reds logo, score! My kids didn't care, and were very excited to get them.

Somehow, two high school teams call these fields home. Perhaps the best part of the park, the playspace/jungle gym, has been removed. The parking lot is a common meeting location for drug dealers. The lights go out promptly at 11:45pm, which makes for an adrenaline filled stroll back to the car in the parking lot hoping a killer is not lurking from behind a nearby tree. There have been several reported shootings over the past few years, making everyone leary of entering the park, especially at night. Frequently people will come in and let their pit bulls rome free. Sometimes, however, some of the locals will sit down and watch a game and cheer for one team or the other. On a typical game night during the week, parking spaces are a premium, leading to people parking in the grass or making up their own spots on the roadway. All this being said, the park makes for a good atmosphere for a summer baseball game. If you're looking for a place to catch a decent baseball game with a chance of not making it home again, this may be the place for you. Although, in the seven years I've been playing at this park, I have not had a problem. Just be aware of your surroundings and enter at your own risk
