For our last night in Copenhagen, I was tasked with finding a spot for dinner and opted for a traditional Danish meal at Frk. Barners Kælder. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and regardless of where you sat, there was a nice mix of locals and tourists, which always feels like a good sign. We chose to sit inside. We did a walk in and were lucky to get a table. From other reviews I had read beforehand, reservations are recommended, especially during busy dinner hours. We ordered Regitze Barner's Favorites, which included Patty shells, Wiener schnitzel, and old fashioned apple stew. We also started with Miss Barner's herring specialty and the Skagen toast, then finished with the kransekage. The staff made the experience even better. When they served the herring, they asked if we knew the proper way to prepare and eat it. Since we did not, they happily walked us through it. They gave the same thoughtful attention to the table next to us, showing them how to debone their fish. It never felt pretentious, just genuinely welcoming and eager to help us non locals experience these Danish dining traditions. The food was fantastic. The Patty shells, filled with chicken and white asparagus, were rich and comforting. The Wiener schnitzel was perfectly crisp with a tender interior and served with amazing potatoes, peas, and a delicious brown sauce. The old fashioned apple stew was light, subtly sweet, and layered with a crisp base, apple compote, lightly whipped unsweetened cream, and a dollop of jam on top. The herring specialty was a great introduction to Danish herring, with well balanced flavors that were approachable even for first timers, while the Skagen toast was fresh, creamy, and packed with sweet shrimp and fragrant dill. The favorite of the meal, though, was the dessert--kransekage!. The marzipan had just the right amount of sweetness, and I ended up enjoying it even more than the apple stew. As a tourist, I cannot say whether every dish was prepared exactly as tradition dictates, but everything we had was delicious, and the warm, attentive service made for a wonderful final dinner in Copenhagen. They claim if you don't have a reservation you can only eat there an hour and forty five min (place was empty when we got there, and when we left there were only three other tables occupied...). I got the schnitzel that came with herring, potatoes, peas, and gravy. The portion was huge and the cutlet were cooked perfectly, crispy and juicy. They require a reservation. Barners. Not unusual. Most København eateries unless their kabob joints. Only places requiring reservations know how to run their reservations system - not this place. Here was my experience. Yours will be identical or worse. You're better off hitting a pølser truck. Says it on their website. Reservations needed. So I made a reservation on their website. Only it was a bait and switch. I got a response message telling me that I had not made a reservation but was now on a waiting list. No further insights. Like it and lump it. I'm a solo diner so I emailed the email address provided on the website to obtain further information. Go figure. I inquired if they had any spots open for one single person in the six remains hours. One hour goes by, as I'm checking my emails. Nothing. Two then three hours - nothing. I stayed in and gave up. Tak pal. The next morning I see I got zero response all night. So I wrote a snarky email to them that morning after. My email didn't seek to evoke or inflict trauma but rather convey an expression of my valid dissatisfaction over their casual unprofessionalism. I was raised Danish. Taught to bow as a boy. Manners matter here in this lovely city. Manners matter period. Apparently not at Barners. Their response? A blow off saracastic email where I am told - not asked - but TOLD to have a nice day. And you know what? I did! It's Copenhagen! I conclude this micro-screed of my minor tirade on that humorous note not to dilute the importance of my complaint but set it in perspective. They sling chow for a living. I was on vacation. No one lost a limb - in fact I likely saved an arm and a leg judging by their prices. This eatery must not be run by Danes. Danes are the kindest, most polite people on earth. Had it been a Dane seeing my email, I'd have gotten a quick note offering minor polite apologies and frankly ensuring a higher likelihood I'd try again in the future by treating me with the kindness Danes are famous for - except if you're a WWII collaborator. But whatever Barner help just shot me a sarcastic, dismissive "have a nice day" response meant "get lost - I can't be bothered and you're foolish for expressing dissatisfaction. I am too busy and self-impressed to sort out a reservation system that fairly and effectively accommodates our patrons." Try Tight or any number of droves and oodles of other fine Danish eateries. This place must be run by Etruscans or Mesopotamians - you're thinking "aren't they extinct?" You betcha! And it all started with poor treatment of restaurant patrons! Oh and Københavner Cafeen is another first rate eatery! read more

Wow - so good! We ate here on our first night in Copenhagen at the recommendation of our hotel. They made the reservation for us. We arrived at 5:30 as they opened for dinner. We chose to sit indoors. The staff were all very friendly. We ordered beers right away and asked a bit about the menu. Beers and yummy bread and butter were served quickly. Then we placed our meal orders. The menu was smallish, so choosing wasn't very difficult. We both chose different meals and we both enjoyed them. The size of the meals were huge. To do again, we'd probably share one. She ordered the Plank Steak. It was so good And cooked medium rare as ordered. It was served on a bed of mashed potatoes, compound butter for the steak, roasted tomatoes and roasted bacon-wrapped asparagus. So good! I ordered the Veal Schnitzel. The veal was pounded pretty thin, breaded and fried. I'd have preferred it a bit thicker but it was still flavorful and it was huge! It came with huge portions of fresh green peas and roasted potatoes. I chose a side of brown sauce (brown gravy for us Americans) and it was very tasty. I did my best on this meal but could not quite finish it all. Again - so good! I'm not ready for a meal this size just yet but I very much recommend this place. read more

I had the rump roast of beef on the waiter's recommendation as they were out of the butter-fried plaice from the North Sea (a seasonal special June-September). Oh my goodness! One of the best roast beef dishes I think I have ever had. The brown gravy was amazing as was everything else on the plate. The caramelized pearl onions were unlike any caramelized onion I have previously had and I've eaten a lot! I'm a huge fan of caramelized onions and these were unique. I have seen some complaints that the kitchen closed early. They only make a certain amount of food and that is fine. I am glad to hear that places don't have endless amounts of food because that means it is freshly prepared. The only thing I didn't love was the old fashioned apple stew. Maybe because it was served cold. I don't think it was bad quality or anything like that. Just wasn't something I enjoyed that much. I will definitely return when I am back in Copenhagen. read more

Service is a joke. The kitchen lost our ticket twice. No big deal, I'd still give five stars. Things happen. BUT We were asked to move to another table while we wait for the kitchen. WE HAD A RESERVATION IN ADVANCE! We are waiting on the kitchen, not hanging around taking up space. When I told the guy it was inappropriate to ask us to move (after he asked twice), he kept interrupting saying we had to move as our reservation was over. The history of the place is very interesting - this has been an home for nearly homeless young women who needed to prostitute there selves to get along. Perhaps the heat inside and my lack of appetite colors my opinion of this typical Danish restaurant, but for the cost, I would try another spot next time. One of our group raved about her liver dinner but my wiener schnitzel was dry and not flavorful. Others seemed to like pork stew OK. I enjoyed our dinner at this traditional Danish Restaurant as our first meal in Copenhagen. My friend got the Pork Stew and I took the Roast Beef. The beef was very tender, it came with the lingonberry sauce and a side of steamed or boiled potatoes. It kind of reminded me of Thanksgiving meal. I finished the entire plate, including the potatoes! I hated myself as I took my last bite but I think I do not regret it at all. I guess I will gym harder when I get back home. I had a taste of Pork stew as well. The soup is tomato cream based, very creamy and dense. It had great depth if flavors but not overpowering the tender pork. Her dish came with a side of mashed potatoes and I think I stole half of that. It was creamy, fluffy, surprisingly light. Any beer would do but we took the Royal Pils. As well as a shot of traditional liquor (made from potatoes as told by our waitress). The service was amazingly good (as opposed to some reviews indicating bad service). A delicious way to start our time in Copenhagen! I had the rump roast (incredibly tender and tasty) and my husband got the pork stew (flavorful and comforting). Mixed feelings on this restaurant. You need a reservation, but their system is to call or email 24 hours beforehand. You can't do it online. I went on a Wednesday night and it was full, so do make a reservation. The menu online isn't very clear, so what you want might not be on the dinner menu. They also have specials that are only available on certain nights. The food was good, I started with the toast skagen which was great followed by the salmon. I asked to switch the boiled potatoes for mashed and was charged for it. Other mains come with mashed, so this was not an inconvenience to the kitchen. I was also charged 15 DK for a glass of tap water. This is a first for me in any country and I can't accept that it is reasonable thing for a restaurant to do. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, but I wouldn't go back again. There are other traditional restaurants if that's what you're looking for. read more

For my birthday me and a few colleagues went for a open top sandwich (smorrebrod) lunch at Frk Barners Kælder. We arrived around noon and saw virtually NO other guests there - I always take that as a bad sign, but my colleagues reassured me that it was still pretty and others would join us later. Right there were, for people started rolling in from 12.30 and onwards. One thing you need to remember about this place is that it is VERY traditional - a fact that is mirrored by the +55 year old cliental. We all went for the butter fried plaice with large shrimps and home made remoulade - very good plaice indeed and well prepared. The remoulade could have had a bit more edge, but it was decent. For seconds, we went for the potato sandwich with bacon (mine was without) and roast pork with pickled red cabbage and cucumber salad. The potatoes were GOOD - nothing's better than new Danish potatoes. The roast pork that my colleague had was apparently quite good, but the red cabbage was overcooked and bland. As for the cucumber salad, I tried it and have had better. All in all, I would for sure come back for the potatoes, shrimps and plaice - and if they manage to improve the pickles and other side dishes I might even give it the 4th star! read more

The staff at our hotel recommended this restaurant since it was close and we were looking for lighter fare...soup, salad, desert etc. Our hotel booked our reservation for 9:30 PM and we arrived about 9:20. We were advised that we would have to wait about 5 minutes while they prepared a table for us...not a problem...yet. We were seated and provided with menus and started to place our order for soup and salad (both items on the starter menu). We were advised that they were out of soup...still not a problem, but storm clouds were forming. We then asked if we could order starters and salads for my three travel partners...I was going to order a main entrée. The waitress went to the kitchen to check on the availability of one of the starters and returned stating that "the chef has closed the kitchen"...25 minutes ahead of the scheduled closing time of 10:00 PM. Our wait staff sensed our displeasure and made a special request of the chef to prepare our selections. The wait staff returned stating that the chef was still not willing to prepare our selections...what's up with that chef??? We ordered a desert and cheese selection since we were hungry and one of my travel partners wanted to taste a selection that her mother had often prepared during her youth. Our waitress brought our selections and apologized for the situation that we faced in regard to the "closed kitchen". I will say that we had no problem with the wait staff, but I am amazed that the chef has no concept of what customer service means. No excuses chef...if you are supposed to be serving until 10:00, don't close your kitchen 25 minutes before 10:00 and expect a glowing review on Yelp...busted. When we returned to our hotel, we told the front desk staff about our experience. They were likewise amazed and said that they planned to contact Frk. Barners Kalder and let them know that they had recommended the restaurant to us and felt that their reputation had been tarnished because of the poor decision made by the chef. Frk. Barners Kalder is nothing but a mega disappointment. Of interest, the restaurant is named in honor of a lady who was an advocate for young ladies in Copenhagen who were mistreated, poor and in deep need as described on the front page of the restaurant menu. The chef may want to read this info and perhaps he will understand that he/she is working at an institution named in honor of a person who would probably question his/her self-serving attitude when it comes to treating others with the respect, empathy and attention that we all enjoy. I read the reviews and felt decidedly uninspired but decided to go on the hotel concierge's recommendation to try it as I specifically wanted to try traditional Danish food. I was not disappointed. The starters were great, mostly seafood which was excellent. I went twice and had a pork stew which was great one day and fillet of cod (even better) the second day. It is true that if you don't order an alcoholic drink they charge for water but so do many places in Denmark apparently! You also have to have a main course ie not just one or two starters but again so do many places. Would I come here again, yes. Do you need to understand the local culture and habits, it certainly helps. Isn't that part of the point of travelling though? If not, there is a McDonalds a few blocks away. read more

We were here with a group of some people, I guess we were like 12 and the policy is that everybody has to order a main dish. It was impossible to convince the people in the restaurant that one of the group will just have starters and no main dish even when everybody else had a main dish and also some of us starters. The food is OK but overpriced. The portions on the smaller side, especially the fish dishes. The service was also OK, however not really well coming or friendly. Foreign credit cards are charged extra. I would say tourist trap is too rude but it's not really far from that and there are other more authentic Danish restaurants in the area. We came here with 2 young kids and it was not family friendly at all. They really should get rid of all of their high chairs. We came late at night when there were few guests because we had not adjusted to the local time yet. It seemed like the bartender and the waitress tagged teamed to make our children uncomfortable. The bartender took away the wooden pepper grinder my son was simply holding. He did not cry or fuss over it. Later, our son cried and the waitress informed us that we would have to take our food and leave in the pouring rain if he would not stop. This really ruined the atmosphere and caused our other child to cry too. The entire service staff was made up of women so I was surprised they were so uncompassionate. On top of it, the food only tasted good if it was drowned in gravy. The burger was so bland except the onions on it were OK. Maybe pepper would have helped but they took it away from us. Thank goodness we got mash potatoes and gravy. For good reasonably priced Danish food, go to the National Museum of Denmark. The menu is limited but it is delicious. For family friendly atmosphere, go to Jensen which is a block or 2 away. read more

Our family enjoyed this traditional Danish restaurant on our vacation in Copenhagen. I had the calves liver, my husband had cod, my daughter had the paprika stew and my son had salmon. We asked at a hotel for a spot to grab some real Danish food. They directed us less than two blocks away to this cozy little spot. Our waiter knew the menu inside and out and seemed actually pleased to be serving us, which only added to the home-like feel of the establishment. My wife chose a Danish style pot roast and I went with the stew. The stew was heavily seasoned with paprika and featured large chunks of pork with mushrooms and onions. We arrived in Copenhagen on August 21, staying at the wonderful Andersen Hotel. We took a walk around the neighborhood and found this lovely, old world Danish restaurant just doors away. Went in and had our first dinner on Danish land....and it was delicious! We started with the herring flight, then pork and beef dishes...all hardy. We felt the service, food and drinks were all very good. If you are interest in a neighborhood place where locals eat...this is it...and they have an outdoor patio if you like eating outside. read more
