What can I say that hasn't been said. My wife and I were on a little Montana adventure due to the fact that trains couldn't get through the mountains 'cause of the wildfires. We were on our way back to catch the train east in Havre, and were looking for a place to get dinner (specifically a steak, let's be honest). This place came up, 10 miles past Shelby. This on the map plus the best western in Shelby, and we were set up. Sure it isn't much to look at from the outside. But let's talk about the food and drinks. First off, they have a totally good beer selection. I had the hippy highway out of big sky, and they had a bunch of other tasty drafts. My wife got the steak diane, I had the frontier special/surf & turf. Great steaks. Great great steaks. Stuff like this makes me love Montana so much. Only thing I'd say is if I went back I'd skip the surf & turf piece and just stick to the steak. In retrospect this seems obvious, but I got excited ok? It was a Sunday night, so we were the only folks in there when we left (based on other folks' comments we had called ahead -- when we got there they were like: "you must be the reservation?") Just our car, the highway, and the grain silos along the tracks across the road. Some things don't have to be complicated.

Walleye pan fried, green beans, wild rice, mushrooms. Served with choice of soup or salad & warm bread.

Pleasant, clean & definitely a surprise. The owners both run the place & cook here. The food was prepared exquisitely. Such a nice surprise to have food that is prepared well & not overdone. The flavors blended with the other accompaniments & complimented, rather than overpowered. The presentation was simple, but eloquent. The lemon was cut to accent the dish & helped to make a beautiful presentation. The restaurant is actually in Dunkirk, not Shelby.

One of the best kept secrets of Montana. We had a party of 20...the service was outstanding and everything was served in a timely fashion. The food is to die for! Everyone in our group was raving about their entree. I had Steak Diane, by far, this is one of the best steaks I've ever eaten. I've never been disappointed when dining here. Delicious!

I just had the most amazing fish and chips at the Frontier. Dinner with a party of 7 and we were all thrilled. Walleye. Salmon. Steak. All amazing.

If you're from out-of-town you'll probably drive by The Grand and pass by it without knowing it's…read morethere. The building looks like it hasn't been changed in 50 years. And, no one seems to care. This is a local's spot that I'm guessing doesn't see too much traffic from those who don't live here. It's also, one of two places to eat in Chester (other than Spud's) and the only one open late. When you walk inside, and if you aren't with a bunch of locals, people will turn and look at you (everyone is friendly). It's almost like a movie. You'll find a few good ole boys at the bar drinking and often the same few daily. A few people will be playing the slot machines. And, others will be chatting and ordering drinks/food. There's a bar and restaurant side, and normally one bartender and another server, or one that does both. It's like a rundown dive bar and locals love it, possibly because there's no where else to go. Either way, if you are hungry you might not have any other choices. Keep in mind, even the grocery store closes at 8pm. After that, it's here, starve or go eat some of the wheat on the farms that surround the region. The food is average and if you like greasy food, you'll love this place. They do provide value, large portions and plenty of flavor. What's their specialty? Locals will tell you the broasted chicken. Many of my friends call the restaurant "The Coop" just because of it. And, where else can you find four pieces of broasted chicken for less than $10 (and sides)? Normally, I'll order a burger. The Brown Burger is a monstrous two patties that also carries ham, bacon and cheese. My big buddies order it, but I stick with the patty melt, and often ask for pastrami on it. The burgers taste hand-made (we know they are) and won't do you wrong. They have hand-cut fries and sweet potato tots, too. On a positive note, unlike the rest of the region, they don't use iceberg lettuce, rather fresh greens. The salad is far better than you'd expect. Keep in mind, this is the only place in town where you can watch a game, have a beer, grab a bite and play a slot machine - without shuffling your feet. You'll find yourself in the midst of farmers, ranchers, teachers and a few other locals and full after a meal here.
