Wow! We aren't from around here, but at the recommendation of our kids who live nearby in Shelby, we HAD to try it out. To start with, the Frontier Bar & Supper Club is a perfect example of what a best kept secret looks like! The outside may be old, but the inside is busy & full of life. We quickly realized that this was a hometown favorite where the locals go. I think everyone in the dining room knew each other! There's the dinner side & the bar side. Hubby & I arrived at 6:00 pm for dinner (glad we were told to make reservations!). We were quickly greeted by nice gal who seated us right away. Our waitress, Ellie, met us at our table as we were still getting settled. She told us she was new, but she handled our orders & everything else like a pro! The food was extremely generous, fairly priced & delicious! Soup of the day was Shrimp Chowder. It has ruined us from ever wanting CLAM chowder again! It was so good! We asked for to-go boxes so we'd have enough room for dessert. Ellie recommended Lava Cake as her favorite so we went with that. Great choice & I'm glad we split it! (Check out the photo!) Nothing says welcome back to the USA like a burger. After our vacation through Canada, this place hit the spot! From looking at the outside, and the front door slamming super hard behind us, I was a little concerned that Frontier wouldn't live up to it's Yelp reviews. But wow, what a great place! We each ordered a burger... And our total before tip was $18. In California, that would have been $18 each! The burger was fantastic, albeit the bun wasn't very interesting. The meat was cooked perfectly and was clearly good quality. Plus a huge heap of crispy fries... Mmm! Service was friendly. Restroom was clean, and cutely decorated. An easy five stars. Wow, Wow is how I can sun this place up. The food was so good. I had the Salmon and it was awesome. The other person in my party had the Steak Sandwich and said the seasoning on the steak was really good. It look good as well. We sat at the bar and the bar tender and our waiter was great. They kinda tag teamed us and we didn't need or want for anything. I would say by the outside apprentice it is probably somewhere I wouldn't have stopped. What can I say that hasn't been said. My wife and I were on a little Montana adventure due to the fact that trains couldn't get through the mountains 'cause of the wildfires. We were on our way back to catch the train east in Havre, and were looking for a place to get dinner (specifically a steak, let's be honest). This place came up, 10 miles past Shelby. This on the map plus the best western in Shelby, and we were set up. Sure it isn't much to look at from the outside. But let's talk about the food and drinks. First off, they have a totally good beer selection. I had the hippy highway out of big sky, and they had a bunch of other tasty drafts. My wife got the steak diane, I had the frontier special/surf & turf. Great steaks. Great great steaks. Stuff like this makes me love Montana so much. Only thing I'd say is if I went back I'd skip the surf & turf piece and just stick to the steak. In retrospect this seems obvious, but I got excited ok? It was a Sunday night, so we were the only folks in there when we left (based on other folks' comments we had called ahead -- when we got there they were like: "you must be the reservation?") This place is definitely a gem that is meant to be found. My family and I (8 total) are here last night to celebrate a birthday and it was great. I had the Frontier steak and everything was good. My dad has the BLACKENED PRIME RIB and it was very very good! I kept stealing bites from him. I would recommend the prime rib but they only have it some days/times. Overall good beer and decent interior. They could use some more lightening as it was pretty dark but nothing to fuss over. Service was also great. She was prepared and would bring out things like butter and sour cream for potatoes before we were served. Backend of the house was good too. All the food came out on time and hot! read more

Pleasant, clean & definitely a surprise. The owners both run the place & cook here. The food was prepared exquisitely. Such a nice surprise to have food that is prepared well & not overdone. The flavors blended with the other accompaniments & complimented, rather than overpowered. The presentation was simple, but eloquent. FYI: The Frontier is actually in Dunkirk and not in Shelby, and the address states. However, it is on US 2 and you will not miss it is you drive east from Shelby on US 2. Every time I go back in Montana, I HAVE TO eat here. The food is out of this world, and tasted like "home-cooking" should. They also have a full bar, and love to make weird drink orders. The best dishes are the beef, whether it is Prime Rib (special not offered all the time) or the various steak cuts. The portions are huge! Not just of the steaks themselves, but also the sides. The first time I ate here with my very hunger older brother, he ordered the one of the biggest steak they had. I was bigger than both of his immense hands put together, HAHA. Also the corn and beans on the side of the plate were at the edge because the meat was so massive. Not only are the steaks huge, they are tender and fresh. They are also cooked to order, and they mean it. Back East if you want something medium order it rare, if you want something rare order it warmed. However, these people know whats up as far as cooking beef goes. This is not a fancy place, but it has everything that is great about Montana country dining. There were 4 of us for dinner last night and it was phenomenal! I have celiac so the owner came out to our table, Michelle went over the menu options that are gluten free. She was very informed on gluten and even offered to make a substitution. She went back to the kitchen and checked on a few things to answer my questions and came back to our table. The prime rib was nice and thick, had great flavor, was very tender and had very little fat. My husband had the walleye and he said it was very good. The salmon was wild and very good also. General consensus is that this is the best eatery in Toole County, which in all honesty does not say a whole lot. The food definitely has a home-cooked feel to it, but I mostly attribute that to the lack of seasoning used. Portions are large, but so is the price tag. Ive heard of the Frontier from many people and of course Facebook. While in Shelby on business I had to try. The place was outdated but I think that adds to the charm of the place. Inside was large and spacious to say the least. Beer selection was good. The menu has a bit of everything. I chose chicken fried steak. Mostly because I'm incredibly picky when it comes to it. The server assured me the beef was hand cut and tenderized so I went for it. I wasn't disappointed. Best I've ever had. Incredibly tasty and tender. Mark is so wrong. I have had the best food in Montana at the Frontier. Did not leave hungry at all. Prices were as reasonable as you will find anywhere and the food is a lot better than most places. when i saw this place was 10 miles out of Shelby I hesitated but WOW was it worth the drive. my wife and I split the prime rib dinner $24.95 (that includes tax). The waitress said it would be 16 to 18 onces and it was at least thatbig. Fantastic steak, great service. Be fore warned it looks like the worse biker bar you ever was. I've been to this place twice and was not impressed either time. The last time I ordered the chicken and it looked like and tasted like it came right out of a Banqet Box of chicken in the freezer. Yuck. As for the owers "mingling" with the dinners all I saw was the cook drinkning at the bar. This place is more like a dive than a "supper club" and way too expensive!
