We stopped by for lunch because there were hardly any other options in the area. I ordered the venison pie and it wasn't great. The pie crust wasn't flaky and it had a more doughy texture to it. The pie was filled with generous amounts of meat but it's lacks seasoning so it was rather bland. The side salad suffers from the same results. If I find myself driving around the area again, I'd probably try something new instead of returning.

This was our stop on our drive between Queenstown and Franz Josef Glacier. My driver told me it was "nothing fancy" and he was right, but it did allow me to stop and grab a sandwich, a bowl of some pretty good soup and to use the restroom. The people who run it are very friendly and welcoming. It must be fun to see all the different nationalities that stop by here. They are quick to accommodate your request and to offer a joke. The menu is pretty simple, there are prepared sandwiches in the case ( use the tongs if not wrapped) or you can order something hot off the toaster. I went with a grilled cheese sandwich with tomatoes and some of their veggie soup. Simple? Yes. But satisfying as well. You can also grab an ice cream or coffee for the road as well. Know that the bathrooms are out back, past the sliding door, and you are not able to eat any food that is not purchased on the premises ( there are plenty of signs about this) Prices are not too bad ( remember I said they had a monopoly on the place) but I did spend $35 on lunch for my driver and me. My soup was $9 alone which seemed a bit high, though. It came with a big piece of brown bread which I didn't eat because of my sandwich. This place will never win any gourmet awards, but the restroom stop alone was worth the money!

My only mistake was not reading the packet of marmalade, that I was told was honey, before I put it in my coffee. People's facial distortment when I ask for honey in my coffee is comparable to mine when I hear that someone puts ketchup on their mashed potatoes. There is outside seating with a perfect view of the landscape that surrounds this off-the-beaten-path, cafe. The restaurant is less than 50 m away from the Heritage Park Motel and is open from 7:30 AM to 3 PM. Pro tip: hot sauce is chili sauce

It is a small trailer with picnic tables and a little bit of seating inside. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. We both had the blue cod and it was absolutely delicious. Worth every penny. The salad it came with was also fantastic. Wear long sleeves and pants for bug spray as there are lots of sandflies around. It was a great experience and we are so glad we made the effort and would recommend.

It's a long hour drive from the Haast and Route 6 which takes you north to Fox Glacier or west to Wanaka. The drive is beautiful and we were lucky to be there on a sunny fall day. Before you go make sure to check the sign at Haast. It's a small one on the left right by the gas station. That will let you know if the place is open. It's tiny with maybe four tables and even though the website says it is open 11-4pm the hours seem pretty irregular. This is a small single wide trailer with a kitchen on the side, picnic benches outside and a few tables inside. Also make sure to wear long sleeves and pants and have bug repellent on because this place is awash with sandflies. In our case we got there super excited to discover the restaurant was closed for the season. So sad but glad to get out here. We hear the crayfish are just extraordinary. They are literally fresh off the boat. So before you go make sure to call or watch for that sign.

The eatery also houses Burkes Brewing Co. which is a part of the the NZ Ale Trail, so fresh suds poured from clean lines were had alongside our dinner. I ordered Fusion Fish & Chips (35 NZD; sake marinated battered fish, aurora sauce, and fries) and the S.O. a Chicken Burger (30 NZD; marinated fried chicken, nagoya sauce, mayo, tomato, slaw, and fries). We missed that the chicken burger was fried though somehow this came out a tad cold which tells me this was reheated. My Fish and Chips, on the other hand, came out piping hot. The batter was a little thicker on these bad boys (hence the fusion to English style fish and chips?) and the sauce more a tomato based creamy sauce than tarter sauce. I was ravenous so this was consumed in earnest. This came with a refreshing side of shredded cabbage, the aurora sauce serving as a good dressing for this. I'd say I was mostly a happy camper, though the boy probably not so much. Though our goal was to avoid red meat, we still ate heavy with all the fried food. Pricing was on the upper end, but there isn't much room for competition around so it is what is it.
