Being situated right near the door of Morningside Woolies probably means the prices have to stay competitive or better, but that proximity to the yawning mouth of the multinational doesn't stop the queues at Feast on Fruit.

The location is reasonably convenient, near the hospital with ample bus access and a train station on the other side of the hospital. I've gotta say, I was pretty impressed with the range and presentation of fruit and veg. Tucked just inside a Spar-owned shopping centre, Mother of All Fruits occupies a huge floor space. Most of this is taken up by rows of fresh produce, but there's also a section for packaged and frozen goods. The range of fruit and veg is great and their herbs come in huge bunches for around $2.95 each. There are also lots of "bucket" specials to be had where you get a reduced price for buying a large amount. For $30, I filled a green bag and walked out with a tray of 20 bowen mangoes. Pretty good value, especially the $10 tray of mangoes. Whilst extremely well organised and well presented, the only thing I don't like about this produce store is that it feels a little too much like a supermarket. I remain faithful to the Gabba Fruit Market, which has a more local feel to it and has a less hectic carpark.

I find that their selection and quality of tomatoes exceeds everywhere else including All About Fruit. Their prices are more than you would pay for fruit and veg in a supermarket, but the freshness, quality, and variety is far, far better. Their fruit is actually ripe and tasty, unlike a lot of the tasteless, hard-as-rocks fruit you find elsewhere. As well as fruit and veg, Milton Fruit Bowl sells lots of nibbles like dried fruit, nuts, lentils, and confectionery and they often have some really lovely looking flowers at bargain prices. It's very handy having the Milton Fruit Bowl in this shopping strip because right next door is a deli and a butcher and there's also an IGA so if you need ingredients for a dinner party or something, you have everything you need in one centre. Milton Fruit Bowl has been around since the late 80s and even now is something of an undiscovered gem. You never see it packed full of people the way you do at Rock'n'Roll on the south side or James Street Markets, yet the quality is better and the prices similar or even lower. Make sure you get a piece of the wonderful fresh produce in this Fruit Bowl.

It's like they tag team eachother, and add in the butcher and Tognini's deli goods, and you're set. You need not go anywhere else for your fresh produce. There's a level of #smugtrolley that comes from shopping at a spot like Milton Fruit Bowl but from that level of virtuosity comes the knowledge you're supporting a family-operated local business and that, in my experience, the quality of produce was always at the highest. Yes, I probably paid for it but they always, for example, came through on more specialty items that may not be as easily able to purchase from the supermarkets. A great local spot to keep up your sleeve! Pro Tip: Often you can purchase olive trees, fruit plants and herbs from the front of the store.

The fruit and vegetables all looked so fresh and bright and the place struck me as slightly overstaffed, which meant you never had to wait to be served or make an enquiry. I bought a couple of things and was shocked when the girl recited the exceedingly low price of my purchases to me. I was so pleased that I did another lap of the store and picked out a few more things. Not only did they have a great range of cheap, fresh fruits and vegetables, but there was a small deli-type section full of exotic cheeses, special types of yoghurt, unusually flavoured pastas and much more.

Perving aside, thus started my 15 year love affair with Andrew's Quality Meats. It sounds gross, like who the hell has a love affair with a butcher shop? Me. Okay? They always do a great rib fillet. They do $2.99/kg chicken drumsticks practically all year round (my honey soy drummies are fantastic), the cuts are always good ones, not sloppy fatty ones (you know what i'm talking about), they do a great roast chicken breast with macadamia and cranberries inside (oven roasted 180 degrees celcius for 40 minutes) and they do amazingly lean sausages that taste even better than the fatty ones. They will french cut the pork rack for you, they will practically kill a cow and slice the rump off if they are out, they will crumb your lamb cutlets in front of you if they have none in the display window. In fact, Andrew even told me how best to cook my rib fillet roast as i'd never cooked one before all those years back. The shop was busy, and he took the time to pull mea side and make sure I knew what I was doing, to get the best out of the great cut of meat i'd just paid for. They also do family packs, bbq packs, cheap bones and mince for your dogs... the mince is minced fresh daily as well. 2kg of Premium 4 star beef mince for $16. 4 stars people! The meat isn't glad wrapped up, they do great turnover and they take orders over the phone, there isn't much these great bunch of guys won't do. The staff are lovely and the turnover seems pretty slow, so you'll get to know the faces of your checkout assistants quite well. There is always a good selection of fresh fruit and vegies available, but the meat range can be limited at times. Everything is a little more expensive than you'd expect to pay at a larger store, but for the convenience of an 11pm shopping trip, a little extra cash is worth it.

That's why I appreciate the role of chains like IGA. To me, they represent the happiest compromise possible between a 24-hour convenience store and a full-blown supermarket. IGA Milton has an especially good range and boasts impressive opening hours: 6am - midnight 365 days a year (foreign readers from countries where 24-hour supermarkets are easy to find will have to excuse my excitement)! The deli here is quite gourmet, with a good selection of salamis and prosciutto as well as an array of olives. There are also some wholesome ready to eat salads and other heat-and-eat options like tortilla stacks. The nearby cheese selection showcases a well sourced selection of brie, camembert, blue and many others. I've even bought a very tasty pre-made sand crab lasagne from the refrigerated section. I suppose we have the area's high socio-economic status to thank for these epicurean touches.

My roommate laughs at me every time I say I'm popping down there for groceries and sarcastically wishes me luck getting a park, and he's not wrong. It's every man for himself when it comes to parking at this place. Horrible parking experiences aside though, this IGA is a godsend. The amount of times I've panicked when I've had nothing to take to work for lunch the next day or I've run out of milk and this place has saved me, I simply cannot count. One particular occasion I forgot it was a coworker's birthday the next day so I frantically rushed into Milton IGA at around 11pm and quickly swiped up a chocolate mud cake. It's a constant topic of conversation in my house how amazing the Baroona Road IGA's opening hours are. 6am to 12am every night; how does it get any better than that? Plus it's a TINY place, and yet I always seem to be able to find everything my heart desires. How do they manage to pack all that stuff into this tiny little space? Beats me, but they do. I prefer it to even larger supermarkets where they'd have about five hundred different brands of washing powder or mango juice because Baroona Road IGA always has what I need. For a small place, it has a ridiculously amazing selection of gourmet cheeses and healthy cooking options, plus a better range of caesar salads than I see in larger IGAs or Woolworths stores. Rather than go to Toowong's large and probably cheaper Coles, I prefer to go here. It's more convenient, and the selection is excellent. It's far better than any other chain grocery store I've experienced thus far. Everything is super easy to find whether you're in a rush or planning a larger shop. Because of Baroona Road IGA, I never go hungry. If you're a Milton/Auchenflower local, you'll find that you cherish and appreciate this IGA as much as me; if you survive the rat race of the car park out front, that is.
