There are literally paddocks either side of the place, and I admit I love it. It makes you feel like the fruit and veges they stock are more fresh and healthy than those you find in central Auckland supermarkets. And, they are. I'm pretty cautious when it comes to apple buying - most apples are soft and floury and awful. If a store stocks fresh crisp juicy apples, I'll be a fan. And Passion Produce is definitely one of those stores. Every piece of fruit and bag of veges I've ever purchased from Passion Produce have been delicious. What's more, not only is their produce great - the prices are even better. Living in central Auckland, fruit and veges for the week often cost around $50, but if I get them at Passion Produce I instantly save about $15. It's that good - every week there are new specials. This week for example, you could purchase a kilo of Royal Gala apples for 99cents! Crazy good prices! Tip: In the corner of the Passion Produce carpark is a little stall that sells real fruit ice-cream and makes a good cup of Allpress Coffee. Get your groceries then enjoy a delicious treat!

As mentioned…read morein one of my previous reviews, I am obsessed with comparing the many fruit and vege stores in this area, and Yips' comes in at a close second in my opinion. Yip's always has fantastic specials and deals on their produce. Heads of broccoli for 99cents, watermelon at $1.49 a kilo, leeks at 79cents - buying your produce from Yip's is a far more cost effective way to shop. Plus, unlike in most supermarkets the produce at Yip's is fresh, naturally grown and preservative free. Bonus. By purchasing your groceries from Yip's not only can you feel good about the healthy food you're stocking your cupboards with, you can also give yourself a pat on the back for supporting a locally owned, independent, business.

Its also bit of a mini market, its got a number of Asian goods - tofu, soya sauce, noodles and all that. But it also got Italian/Mediterranean type stuff like Olives, feta cheese, pasta, pasta sauce, and it also has some really good oils, like Omega mix with Avocado oil and Olive Oil. I also love that its clean and tidy inside, some Fruit/Asian type places aren't. Also it's nice and handy and has good parking. I also always find the staff to be super friendly and I love that they offer me a box instead of plastic bags.

My kitchen counter is proudly displaying a big bowl of micro-green radish sprouts & I feel healthier every time I look at them! But Boric also has: a fresh fish counter, butchery, deli, icecream by the scoop, coffee, homemade cakes, dinners & salads, a kids' playground AND a boutique selection of homewares & the finest artisan products. And friendly staff. And a great wine, beer & cider selection. And I've probably missed something out. This is the kind of place that you could easily wander around for ages, progressively filling up that trolley more & more. I can see that will quickly become my new hobby!

I must say a lot of the food is unfamiliar to me so while it is interesting to browse here, I don't tend to buy all that much. We often do buy ice cream here when we get our takeaway on Lincoln road on a Friday evening - it just saves us from having to nip into Countdown. The staff here are very nice and are apparently quite knowledgeable when it comes to the food they stock - I heard a woman asking them about the rice they stock and they seemed to know a lot about it. They do sell all the conventional Kiwi veggies here and compared to the supermarket, their prices are quite cheap. There are a few of these Fruit and Vege stores out West so I guess they have to be cheap to compete with them.

Several times I've asked if they have extra stock out the back of a particular item and staff have always been friendly and courteous. The layout is easy to navigate and the produce always stacked nicely on display. They also have a decent selection of nuts and dried fruits, as well as ethnic foods. I like to buy my wraps from here, and they have delicious fresh bagels and paninis for sale too. Also check out the frozen dumplings etc in the cool stores at the front of the shop!

I noticed one that seemed to be a kind of herbal pharmacy also selling ugg boots, and a meat counter selling all sorts of delicacies, from very cheap chicken breasts through to chicken's feet, pig's snouts, and even pig tero-tero (English translation apparently). Having a quick look around I think this may be the cheapest and have the widest variety of the Asian supermarkets in Northcote, perhaps why it is so big and popular.

Bulk Foods stock a very wide range of products, including dried fruits, nuts, organic products, flours and cereals, and all sorts of international food I'd never even heard of. Pepperdews, pomegranate molasses, Ceres organics muesli for only $9 and literally the biggest jar of gherkins I have ever seen - Bulk Food Savings was a delight to explore. I was stoked to find pure vanilla extract and vanilla pods in this store - they were much cheaper than at places like Nosh, and are great to use in baking. The only downside of Bulk Foods was the staff. They weren't particularly inviting nor were they very friendly, but hey - when the variety of food is that good and the prices are so low, who cares? You can't have everything! Bonus: It smells fantastic in Bulk Foods - all the different spices merge in to one mouth-watering fragrance that instantly inspires you to cook delicious Indian curries.
