The prices are super cheap, much lower than you'll find in a supermarket. Yes, the produce is sometimes a little older or less fresh but you can always find what you need and the added bonus is that they have more unusual Asian vegetables like Japanese eggplant, Thai aubergines and a large selection of leafy Asian greens. The staff are friendly and it's always busy! Mad Butcher right next door for your cheap meats.

They do also have bread, milk and cheese but it's more expensive that the supermarket and they've got a really limited range - wouldn't recommend unless desperate.

I noticed one that seemed to be a kind of herbal pharmacy also selling ugg boots, and a meat counter selling all sorts of delicacies, from very cheap chicken breasts through to chicken's feet, pig's snouts, and even pig tero-tero (English translation apparently). Having a quick look around I think this may be the cheapest and have the widest variety of the Asian supermarkets in Northcote, perhaps why it is so big and popular.

But it also got Italian/Mediterranean type stuff like Olives, feta cheese, pasta, pasta sauce, and it also has some really good oils, like Omega mix with Avocado oil and Olive Oil. I also love that its clean and tidy inside, some Fruit/Asian type places aren't. Also it's nice and handy and has good parking. I also always find the staff to be super friendly and I love that they offer me a box instead of plastic bags.

Nowadays, it's my go to for my weekly fruit and vege shop. Not only is everything seasonal but it's also great quality and cheaper than most supermarkets. That's a win win in my book. In particular, the asian vegetables, flowers and strawberries (when in season of course) are brilliant! The market does tend to get a bit crowded at 9:30am so get in early to get the best of the bunch. Oh, and don't forget to try the pork buns and the mussel fritters - they are the perfect Sunday morning snack!

Other treats I have to mention is the Old man with the glasses and the deep voice who has a stall that sells the best chili tomato sauce, and whole grain mustard labelled Jolly Chef Products- a must visit for the home chef. They even have a stall of my favorite ever peanut butter Pic's if you haven't tried this made in Nelson delight please indulge it wont let you down. The lady behind the counter did not go out of her way to help, but was not rude either, just a tad indifferent. I was also super happy to see one of the staples we keep in the fridge that isn't always easy to come by - Braggs all purpose seasoning - very similar to soy sauce but tastes 100 times better, and much healthier. They had several in stock, all 473 ml size selling for $11.16. I am going to have to see the price at my usual retailer, closer to home, for comparison. For those of you who might have Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar as their staple - a lot of people do and for good reason - this store sell the 946 ml bottles for $13.39. A worthy store for the locals.

We got two pieces of snapper and one scoop of chips for $13, and it was heaps of food! The pieces of snapper were huge, lightly battered and flaky and soft. The chips were crunchy and delicious. We sat inside at one of the two little plastic tables and enjoyed. This is very basic - no napkins, no condiments given (except some lemon), and a faint smell of fish in the air. But the fish is really good!
