    Lomito italiano
    Camille R.

Anthony Bourdain wasn't wrong, this place is on my list of favorite restaurants of all time. The sandwich is always delicious. I'll return for at least one, every time I'm in Santiago. Don't let the line at peak times scare you off, it moves fast and it's a good sign.

One of the airline guides to Santiago specifically mentioned this restaurant and so I made a specific path to get here for my breakfast/lunch meal, the last day that I was here in Chile. The menu is on the board and it can be a little overwhelming but I managed to stumble through it. I had read that the "lomito" was the sandwich to order and when I didn't mangle the pronunciation, the lady taking my order asked "tomato? avocado?", I answered "Si. Todo." ("Yes. Everything.") and she went off to prepare the sandwich. The counter surrounds the kitchen area so you can easily watch the ladies hard at work, cooking meat, preparing food and serving it up. A healthy portion of avocado was spread, tomatoes stacked on top and a big dollop of mayonnaise. She then forked a big pile of shredded pork from a spot on the grill and stacked it onto the sandwich. Thankfully, she also left me a knife and fork as this monster is not being picked up. Huge portion and including a bottle of sparkling water, plus tip, I think that it was it was around CLP6000 (US$10). I was particularly impressed to see a gentleman in a white coat with a thermal sensor checking the cold foods to insure the temperatures were okay. I did notice an interesting way the raw meat was lifted over the bread rolls, but that's just my paranoia. It all digested just fine.

Located not far from our hotel near Plaza Italia. Its a short walk and well worth it. I walked in and stood next to the counter. One of the ladies asked me to order. I ordered two lomitos to go. She quickly went to work om mu sandwiches while I paid the bill. In about five minutes I had my order and was out the door. When I got back to my hotel Niki and I made quick work of these two sandwiches. Pilled high with turkey, avocado, mayo, and tomato. So messy but soooo tasty. We will be back.

I went here because Anthony Bourdain recommended it on No Reservations and who doesn't love sandwiches? We went at 3 pm and it was full but we didn't have any issue getting a table. It's a german inspired diner and is a casual and affordable place to grab food. We just walked up to one of the nice ladies at the counter and she took our order for us. She also found us a place to sit and then proceeded to cook the meat and assemble our sandwiches. After you eat, she gave us our check and we paid at the cashier. Please leave a tip, the ladies are so nice and they're working hard! We got the lomito completo(sliced pork sandwich topped with sauerkraut, a generous serving of housemade mayonnaise and tomato sauce) and the churrasco italiano(sliced steak sandwich with mashed avocado, sliced tomato and mayonnaise. Apparently Italiano is a big thing in Chile and is based off the colors of the flag, not the flavors) were huge and delicious! Come hungry or split one with a friend/partner.

Chileans don't mess around with their sandwiches. And all of them say this is the place to go. I've never seen this place without a mass of people- it's definitely a little overwhelming and can make finding a seat difficult. They have stool seating around the center- where you can watch them cook/make the sandwiches- or seating around the edge of the restaurant. First thing to note is that nobody is going to take your order from where you're seated. You need to go up and place your order with the cooks. You can get hotdogs - beef or pork sandwiches- and then you can add different ingredients on top of it. A classic is the Italiano (beef, mayo, avocado and tomato)! You won't regret it! Whenever you're done, go back to the place you ordered to get a little receipt. Then, you take the receipt to the register to pay.

Come with an empty stomach and prepared to eat a lot! I got the chacarerro sandwich with tomato and avocado. The sandwich was the size of the plate and massive! You can easily share the sandwich with someone else. They definitely aren't stingy. There are heaps of meat and more avocado than you can dream of. The restaurant is a spot where all the locals hang out and if you sit at the counter you can watch the chefs cook the meat right in front of you. I came at three pm during the week and it was packed. You seat yourself and be prepared to stand if there are no seats. I paid 5900 Chilean pesos for my sandwich which was a decent price, considering Chilean restaurants aren't very cheap. Would definitely come back here!

The lomito completo was good and it cost 5,000CLP. If you are a foreigner, this is how it works. First, try to get a seat at the bar (you might have to wait when it's full) and just ask the waiter for the English menu. They will prepare your order and it would be ready in 5 minutes top. Once you devoured your sandwich, you have to flag the waitress to give you the receipt then take the receipt and pay at the lady at the entrance. She is the cashier. Hope this helps!

    Churrasco Sandwich with Cheese

It's rare that I eat at the same restaurant twice during a vacation, but Fuente Alemana fell into that category during my trip to Santiago. The Churrasco sandwich is exceptional, and I got it topped with cheese and added some spicy brown mustard. It reminded me a bit of a traditional Philly Cheesesteak, but the cheese is even better because it's cooked on the flat top before being added to the sandwich. They also don't skimp on the cheese. Actually, Fuente Alemana doesn't skimp on anything. The sandwiches are huge and could easily serve as the one meal of the day. It's also reasonably priced at around $8 per sandwich. Most of the Chileans ordered their sandwiches in Italiano style - topped with tomato, guacamole, and a disgusting amount of mayonnaise, which I still can't comprehend. I stuck with the meat and cheese combination and it was love at first bite. There's also no question about the freshness as the meat is prepared right in front of you as all the seating is situated around an open kitchen. The experience is a little overwhelming when you first walk in to the restaurant, especially if you don't speak Spanish, but the staff is extremely friendly and they have a menu that's printed in English. For anyone visiting Santiago, I can't recommend this place highly enough. It may some like a tourist trap as it's situated beside a McDonald's, but it's full of local flavor and character.

Chileans love their sandwiches...and you will to after trying the ones at el Fuente Alemana, a classic 'fuente de soda' in the city. I had their lomito italiano and it was bangin' and huge, so go with an appetite. They're also known for their homemade mayo so slap in on there and don't feel guilty. The place gets packed, plan on waiting for a seat or eat while standing.

This was my last lunch in Santiago. My hotel is nearby and I needed a quick bite to eat. Lo and behold I went at a lunchtime during the work week and it was VERY busy. But I simply waited until a spot opened up at the counter. I asked for a menu anglais and ended up ordering churassco with avocado. Mmmmm it was so good! Service was super fast given the number of people. After I was done they give you a check which you pay to the cashier by the door. Then return the paid receipt and any tips to one of the ladies behind the counter. Great spot!!!

Lomito tell you the best sandwich in Santiago can be found at Fuente Alemana. This is the real deal for an authentic lomito made fresh before your very eyes. I'm told this Chilean institution has been putting out sublime porcine bites for over half a century. Order an ice cold Escudo (la cerveza national) and enjoy your time in this world-class city.

I asked for "whatever is the best" and was given this sandwich with pork, tomatoes, avocado, and home made mayo.

Decided to try this place because it was near my hotel and looked easy, cheap, and good. All of the staff is very friendly, and locals gather around the counter and watch as their food is prepared, often chiming in with "ease up on the mayo!" or "more tomato!" Plan to spend about $10, more if you're having beer. Food was delicious, fresh, and unique. Share a sandwich, it was too much for just me!

This was such a cool, homey place. The wonderful ladies who make the delicious sandwiches gave us a menu and pointed out what was good. They cooked it with a smile and the food was delicious ! Love it!

First of all, this is not a 3.5 star restaurant. I had no wifi so I couldn't see all the great…read morereviews of the other location, but this is absolutely just as good. I wandered in here because I wanted to eat South American cuisine once in Chile. A bit of a wait, maybe because I'm not a local and don't know how to communicate, but I started with a fresh mango juice and it tasted like absolute heaven. Seriously, when I die, if you offer me Heaven or Mango Juice I may have to think about it. Good start. Next came bread with two dips. The piquante dip wasn't all that spicy but had a noticeable tang. Delicious and devoured. Order took about 25-30 minutes to arrive at the absolute peak of lunch: 2 PM. Like Argentina, Chile is nightshifted! It was packed but they kept things moving. I had a pollo with mushrooms dish. Delicious, nice portion, nice price. This place is NOT $$$. It's $$ - I spent $US20 total ($17.000 CL) and could easily have done it for $15. Also, it's not just sandwiches. Keep looking at the menu and find their dishes. That's what you really want here. The other table had extraordinary looking salmon on yellow rice. If I liked salmon at all I would have jumped for that right away. Too bad I only had 3 days in Chile and I didn't know about this on day 1 or I could have visited it more than once!

Friendly staff. Tasty food. Pricey for the type of place -more of a "picá" than a restaurant- but…read moreit is in a touristic area. The pisco sour could be sweeter and the lomo saltado less salty, but overall it was a nice surprise. I'd come back to try the sandwiches.
