Just love the shark, nevermind their Super cool van with the shark teeth in the front and the FIN on the top. I take at least 30 years off my age when I tune my radio in here. Oh yeah baby, open the moonroof and blast the tunes, it don't matter that it's 9 degrees today. I love listening to that Old group The Offspring, "Hey man, you talking back to me? you gotta keep 'em separated".. Hanging out at the Farmingdale airport plaza, the reception here is 5 by 5. The stations and transmitters are located right here. The Shark is also associated with other radio stations like K 98. 3 and WALK 97. 5. That also broadcast on Long Island. Tune-in all around the world yelper friends at .. 94.3theshark.com I like how the station doesn't kill you with commercials, you get to listen to a nice selection of tunes before they pay the bills. So get your head banging Rock and Roll, edgy metal music right here on the shark. Embraces that whole Long Island Jaws thing. I love it. JIM D.

If you are adventurous in your music searches and tastes, try taking a listen to WFMU.org 91.1 FM…read moreradio station broadcasting out of the NYC area and also worldwide internet. The amazing diversity of programming and depth of this station can catch almost anyone's ear. What is refreshing, is all the people playing the music are volunteers, who do not have to follow a corporate format. You will not hear a loop of the same songs day after day. Each 1-4 hour show has their own genre theme, but beyond that can play anything within their theme. I am always surprised by something new every time I listen. The one issue that is troubling is that their federal funds have been cut by 200k recently. Since it is a non-profit station, they rely heavily on listeners to help support the station, and especially during their funds drive this month. I really hope it can continue over the years. Check their website for programming and take a listen. It's one of those rare gems on the airways.

The music curated is a varied, eclectic, freeform heaven of sorts. You will be attracted to its organic community. There are events at Monty Hall where one can be an anonymous tourist. Check out the Record Fair as well. WFMU has broadened and inspired me in my own artful pursuits. So listen in, tune out the mainstream noise and dream.

They are fun and generally pretty low key. Unfortunately, if you don't come armed with your own music, the radio in many of these places seems to drift towards "Freebird" and "We Built This City on Rock 'n'Roll". Ugh! I don't mind a yearly dose of Freebird, but that's kind of the end of it for me. Enter WEHM. (http://www.wehm.com/) They call themselves "progressive" which might be a bit optimistic, but they throw in some Cure, X, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, etc. in with their Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, etc. It's definitely a rock station, but a smart one. You won't have to get your plaid shirt and duct taped shorts out any more than your black frock and pancake makeup to listen. They also play just enough new stuff to keep it interesting. One of the things that I always LOVE about these little stations, and by no means is this phenomenon isolated just to small beach towns, is the locally produced commercials. "Hi, I'm Jim, the Car Doctor." "Hi, I'm Rod, the Car Nurse" (Together) "We wanna FIX YOUR CAR" Or whatever. They're always good for a little giggle. WEHM is no exception. They have the surfer dude from the local surf shop giving updates on the tide, etc. Funny stuff. So what, I'm easily amused. If you're on 27E looking for a radio station, you could do a lot worse than this.
