During the…read moreyears I attended and afterward I witnessed some blatant hypocrisy and violations of the school's stated philosophy, including by some of the most seasoned staff members. The claim is that decisions are to be made by the entire community via School Meeting, but the staff do in fact gatekeep and manage to exclude any ideas or proposals that they don't like without any discussion whatsoever. I personally have known quite a few people who were burned by the heavy-handed controlling efforts of certain staff members. Make no mistake: SVS is NOT a democratic school; it merely masquerades as one. If the founders don't like your idea (or don't like you), it won't be up for a vote; it'll be squashed preemptively. There isn't necessarily anything wrong with a school where students aren't in charge. But it shouldn't pretend to be what it's not.

ms hamm is a genuine verbal abuser and it has impacted me so much that i had to take the time out…read moreof my day to type out this review. ma hamm is a demonic being and needs to seek help, although being possibly far past this point, due to her lack of emotional control and incompetence when working with children in fifth grade. she had yelled at me for forgetting a whiteboard marker for out math practices and i usually have one handy, but that day i had forgotten that i had thrown out the marker because it was dried out and didn't buy another one. this whole problem could've been easily solved if she had let me borrow a marker from her stash of at least 10. i had also been accused as being in the wrong in a situation. my ex-friend had been coloring with me and i was using a yellow marker, and hers a blue. i then decided that it would be a little funny if i put a little dot on her paper. i proceeded to make a small dot on the corner of her paper, started giggling a little, and got my paper forcefully ripped apart and brutally slapped on the leg. she then speedwalked to the teacher, fake crying, and got us both pulled into the hallway. the friend told her that i had scribbled all over her paper and that she "kindly" told me that she didn't like that. i then tried to tell my part of the story, which resulted in me getting cut off by my own teacher and me receiving punishment; lunch detention. the next year, my grade was assigned a homeroom to visit so that we could answer questions from the lower grade about how the next grade would be like. she then went on to yell at the class to be quiet and that they are being disrespectful and disruptive when they had been completely silent already and did not deserve being verbally abused. someone please get this fucking teacher fired for all i care. she can burn in the deepest pits of hell for all of eternity. one other teacher i must critique is ms morgan. she makes her lessons unclear and talks for the whole entire class, leaving no time for students to complete assignments that are, usually, due the next day. as an example, she talked about the "do now" for about 10-20 minutes and then finally moved on to her actual lesson plan, which took about 30 minutes. about a project that we had to present the next day. however, we had no prior knowledge about it and had to create the entire presentation in that one class after she stopped talking, which left us with 10 minutes left in the class. this teacher can join ms hamm. fuck you michelle and mackenzie. you both shouldn't be in tha same building as other children that are already having a hard time.

To summarize: in 6 to 7 years, our kids never said they did not want to go to school. The teachers are superb, it is a very multi-cultural community, the class sizes are small, allowing students to work at their own pace. Either they are super bright in math or need a little more time on reading, there is plenty of resources there to make learning a great experience. They do plenty of field trips and activities, get a great foundation in being good citizens. My kids now in middle school are kind leaders who can build efficient teams and rally good people around. Not only they learnt their curriculum at an advance level, but they mostly learnt to read people and make informative decisions about whom they want to be friends with and whom they do not. Over and over and over . They wouldn't let him leave the room for over an hour. He eventually made something up to get out of there . They called DCF on us .( which was screened out since it was made up) He was 6 years old. They were all about the money. I will never forgive them for the damage they did to my son. If you want to deal with pompous staff in the office and wake up one morning to have DCF called on you for no reason , then this is the place for you!

The Brophy Elementary school is a wonderful learning environment for kids!…read more This school has an amazing culture. The new principal, Mr. Rothwell, staff and teachers are dedicated caring passionate people. They do go the extra mile to foster a warm, loving, safe environment for the kids to grow, learn and develop in. We moved here and didn't know a lot about the schools. The guidance counselor, Mr. Hintz, warmly greeted us and gave us a tour and answered our questions when we were going through the school choice process. The enthusiasm around the school is contagious. Typically a word you don't want to hear about when it comes to schools. However you, your child, and your family are bound to catch it. Parents are friendly and welcoming, whether they are part of the PTO or just coming and going to and from the school. There is plenty of room with large play yards and play structures. Ample parking and a very safe drop off and pick up process. Pleasant street can be a bit busy so drive with care during school hours. Check in at the office and your bound to find more friendly faces willing to help you out. Ms. Silverman is incredible and keeps things pulled together and moving smoothly. If you need help or have questions the health educator, Ms. Kinsella, and nurse, Ms. Pratt, are also ready and willing to step in and put your child at ease. Mr. Wisneski is an outstanding person who does not only teach but brings fun, I mean fun, into the class every day. Every person I spoke to before the beginning of the year had so many wonderful things to say that it helped put my mind at ease. Given our short time at this school I don't know each and every teacher. However, they all work together for the kids and fold them all in. Everyone at Brophy has helped to make the transition smooth, fun, and easy. How can you not learn when you are having fun and excited to be there? So the down fall, if there is one, is the kids grow up and move on.

My kids can't pick a favorite teacher because they've loved them all. My kids have grown tremendously both socially and academically. We've made lasting friendships and the only thing I regret is that in a few years my kids will no longer be at Brophy --when they move on to middle school.
