These people at Functional have been irresponsible and nasty towards me. Since I have upper cervical issues, when I discovered Dr. Porter did upper cervical adjustments, I called him several times to check if they take insurance. They don't and they made it sound like they wouldn't give you a receipt with the medical codes so that you could get reimbursed. I have tried to see what their receipts looked like, but their office manager refused to show me one. When a different regular chiropractor referred me to them although I told him not to, they never contacted me to even let me know they had his referral. Eventually, the other chiropractor asked if I had heard from them. I hadn't, so I decided to drive out of my way to find out what was going on. When I arrived, the office manager was very ugly to me. When she had received the referral like a month or so earlier, instead of contacting me, she threw it out. It seems this office manager hadn't liked my earlier phone calls showing an interest in them and my being concerned about getting a receipt that would be valid for my getting reimbursed by my insurance company. She chose instead to argue with me and had no intention of letting me become Dr. Porter's patient because, I guess, she hadn't liked my need for a fileable receipt since I had had no other pervious contact with her. I had my insurance company call them the next day, and she hung immediately up on them. I can't say if Dr. Porter's approach works since I never got to even see or talk to him. Their uncivil and unprofessional behavior, however, turned me off to them anyhow. The Huntsville area could benefit from attracting more upper cervical chiropractors so that we had a healthy choice to chose from and so that we wouldn't be forced into trying to work with an uncooperative and mean spirited practice like this one. read more

I also have gotten long-term relief from chronic pain (that was not completely resolved by other treatments) from regular chiropractic visits here. If I could give 0 stars, I would. I will try and make this short.. I called and spoke with Teri and was encouraged that my elderly mother would be a good candidate for Vertigo treatment. I explained that we lived 2 hours away and we spoke about treatment a bit more and I scheduled an appt and put down a deposit. i asked for her to email me New Patient paperwork and she said we could just fill out when we got there. Upon arrival we did so and we seated in a consult room. An hour later the "Drs" assistant came in and told us that after he looked over her paperwork that he was not willing to accept her as a patient. (81 but otherwise in good health). We asked the assistant some other questions which she could not answer ( nor should she) so we asked if the Dr could come in and help us understand (because she sees a regular chiropractor often). 30 mins later his assistant came in again to let us know that he was refusing to come talk to us. I was schocked! I have never seen a doctor just dismiss someone! ESP an elderly person who had traveled for 2 hours! I felt bad that his assistant was clearly embarrassed and he made her do his dirty work. This man showed enormously poor compassion, character, leadership and professionalism. I. I developed a back issue during the pandemic from sitting at a computer and not having what I know now as proper spinal support. I changed my chair but still have the discomfort. I previously had no issues but had gone to Functional Chiropractic as a preventative measure in 2019, and stopped as it seemed to create a need to keep going, a need to crack my back. To make a long story short (this is the condensed version of this review as I exceeded the character limit by triple and wasted an hour of my life) they took no precautions to protect people from COVID 19 (the only business out of all the places I've been to since April 2020 mind you.) and interrupted me when I tried to explain what had brought me back. Who does that? Who doesn't let the person living with the pain give the practitioner insight as to what their experiencing? I guess the same type of place that makes up their own guidelines that basically say pretend that there isn't a highly contagious virus killing people and destroying lives all over the world. All I wanted was to be heard about my issue and to have a safe place to do it, while to receive support in healing it. I mean, I'm willing to exchange money and everything! I asked for a refund because I feel like their services did not help at all and it was only one week total that I visited, while paying for a month. I stated my grievances and was informed that because I had come three times (because I needed help. I was uncomfortable the moment I stepped through the door, and very confused) I wouldn't be getting that. I am upset because in that same 30 days I have to go to another doctors office and spend DOUBLE THAT to possibly not be helped again. This is frustrating and expensive and I don't have the money to spend like that. I don't know if the hundred dollars is worth the first one star on Google Reviews but I would say no. I hope they put it under their count of 5 star reviews to balance things out. Californians aren't even able to open their businesses so I would hope we could at least be smart enough to take some precautions and wear a freaking mask. I mean, my boss, a man who cared and helped me immensely and so many others, died from it on Wednesday, January 6th, 2021, after 77 days in the hospital. And to have a doctors(?) office with all sorts of one liners about health on their walls actively operate a place that statistically has to be spreading it is beyond me. Being under Dr. Porter's care has made a huge impact on my pregnancy! He is laid-back, but extremely professional with much knowledge of his craft. Just recently, I went in his office with an extreme amount of pain in my left leg and sacrum, and with just one adjustment, I felt like a different person. Absolutely no pain in my problem areas. At 32 weeks pregnant, I was put on bed rest. During that time I was in so much pain, it was almost unbearable. He came to the hospital AND my house to do adjustments; I felt 100% better! I had suffered from severe back pain for most of my young adulthood. It had gotten to a point where the loudness at which I could crack my back was a common party trick I would perform for others, often to mixed levels of shock and concern. Afterwards I'd always be treated to the same comments, "Does that hurt?" Yes. "How long have you been able to do that?" Awhile. And of course the most common question, "Have you been to a chiropractor?" No. I've never felt comfortable going to doctor offices or hospitals and for some bizarre reason I had it in my mind that a chiropractor wouldn't be very different. I was worried that it would be able to be summed up in three words, intrusive, impersonal, and expensive. It wasn't until I demonstrated this very "trick" for a friend, that I started thinking differently. My friend decided to forgo the questions and instead simply stated, "You should go to MY chiropractor." After some more pressure from a few other friends and family I decided to give it a try. I got the number for Functional Chiropractic from my friend, called, and was able to set up an appointment within the same week. As I was about to go in for my first appointment those three words still repeated in my head, but within an hour they had been all but wiped from existence. Dr Porter was very kind and welcoming and very quickly put me at ease, by being able to easily explain to me what was going on and what he was going to do to help. The set up of the office is very open and inviting and helps make the whole process feel very comfortable. Their pricing was more than reasonable and made me realize this is something I could afford, and now almost a year later, I can confidently say that my back pain relief has been invaluable. Scheduling with their wonderful receptionists has always been extremely easy and flexible. More than once I've had to cancel an appointment due to work and they've been able to fit me in either later that very same day or the next if I still can't make it. As someone who was initially very cautious about heading to a chiropractor, Dr Porter and Functional Chiropractic have more than changed my mind and have helped me to live freer of back pain than I had thought possible. I have since and will continue to highly recommend Dr Porter, his wife Terry and the entire staff at Functional Chiropractic for their amazing service and care.
