The recent experiences I've had at Funkadelic (solo drumming sessions) have all been very positive. The equipment has been well maintained and the rooms, comfortable. The staff have been consistently friendly and helpful. Additionally, the studio hosts many jams and other events which demonstrate a true (and sadly rare) dedication to supporting local musicians. I get a great vibe from Funkadelic, and am very glad they are still around, when so many other rehearsal studios have disappeared. read more

Funkadelic Studios also dba MJ Studios Inc. which resides on the third floor of an office building. Funkadelic Studios houses a total of thirteen (13) active rooms well equipped with sound, lighting as there is also a recording music studio on the premises. Admission for $5.00 with patrons' hand stamped allows patrons to hop six rooms (only six rooms were reserved for this event) in the course of the night. One room for a chill out lounge room; one room for percussion and wind instruments; one room for spoken word poetry open-mic reading; and another for vocals. Room size vary in all thirteen rooms which gives a quaint audience for musicians/artists to be acquainted and comfortable of performing in front a live audience overcoming stage freight. Funkadelic Studios felt like a bar where located all on the same street of a live performance hop from room to room without ever leaving the building. For emerging musician artists and or established musicians Funkadelic Studios is a perfect venue for practice or debuting one's talent. A fellow prolific poet invited me for the spoken word poetry event which to my utter dismay the event did not begin until 9pm. There are soda machines and musical tool machines serving as emergency backup should musicians instruments brake a chord or lost a guitar pick. The rooms are insulated for soundproof as required by law and are equipped with functional A/C ventilation. I rate Funkadelic Studios for lack of food. I would not recommend Funkadelic Studios for youngsters under age 21 as the hours of operation for events, volume of noise, explicit language used are not kid-friendly. read more

Great place for rehearsals. Not terribly expensive, good rooms, pleasant staff, and a generally good, energetic vibe.

Room smelled like weed and b.o. Also was kind of dirty and (like a lot of rehearsal rooms), the gear wasn't in great condition. I think this place got me sick, too. They also charge a 5% fee if you pay with a credit card. The lobby is awkwardly small, and for some reason there were a bunch of dudes just hanging out there doing nothing, making it even more cramped. Meh. My band and I used to rehearse here based on the prices. After realizing that the equipment was horrible, the prices were going up, and they took away cassette recorders, we smartened up and realized it wasn't worth $27+ an hour. Granted, they do have 3 hours for 2 on weekends, but still you'll spend an hour getting everything to work. The staff was semi-helpful, it was a case by case basis. I have memories here, but definitely not attached to this place. Overall: Cheap. Simple. Subpar Equipment. Accessible if you are just starting to play. Barebones Rehearsal. You want starving artist, here you go. Update: I went in mid-February for a jam session. Tape deck recording is back. Didn't use it. Same amps in the room, prices the same. Looked a bit different, added new things to vending machine. I didn't see a plethora of changes. I'll be back to check it out again, as it is the cheapest place to practice. read more

SUPER NICE STAFF, they work hard t make sure u got everything u need for ur musical needs... other then that it is what it is a rehearsal studio. in the room we get they got 1 marshall, 1 roland jc 120, and fender twin reverb. pretty nice bass amp hartke and a drum set. It was easy to make an appointment for studio space at Funkadelic Studio. It was clean compared to other studios and the staff were nice & professional. My only con is to keep up on the maintenance on their equipment. The first piece, the volume button was messed up and and it sound like the fuse was broke. However, their prices are really competitive so we booked another rehearsal room for our upcoming show. read more

Have to say, I've stopped using them about three years ago when they still had their space on W26th Street. It was a hit or miss with the equipment and found when you are nice with the staff they respond to the best of their ability (depending on who's there - most of the staff know the peeves about the equipment - and what and how to wiggle what and where). The Wi-fi on my Mac hadn't worked for a week and they fixed that within a minute. Overall their new local is pretty decent and has a lot of promising things that can happen there. We went to rehearse there recent and everything worked pretty well but, most of all, when the money is tight they still have the best bang for the buck. They have a new manager there, let's see what happens now. read more

The folks who work there are cool. Some of the gear is beat. The three hours for the price of two deal from 10PM to 1AM isn't bad. The days of cheap rehearsal space in Manhattan are long gone, so this place isn't so bad in today's landscape. read more

My band has been practicing there for more than a year, we started at the old location. The new location is a nice improvement - good food close by, better subway access (for me anyway). Inside everything has been taken up a notch - amps, pa, drums, loaner guitars are all in better shape than what was available at the old location. Cosmetically things are still coming together - that is you'll see some building materials around, it looks like they're finishing off the last few rooms. All in all the price is right and so is the vibe - keep up the good work Funkadelic! read more

FYI - Funkadelic has not upgraded their equipment, it's still fairly horrible in that respect. Good news about that place is it's fairly easy to get a room, and the 2 hours for 3 make things cheap. I still go there when every other studio is booked and I want to be cheap about it -- 9 times out of ten, I have to bring my own amp though - and the drum symbols are tinny. read more

They think that they are better than you, tell you you cant wait in the lobby, then their so called called "special clients" sit outside the room you just paid $62 for and talk shit about you because you don't play their shitty opinion of what music should be. Yet I had to wait to go in to the room I paid for, I believe because I wasn't black,, was dismissed when I asked if I could sit in the lobby , All because I have wasn't part of their "hip,black,culture". terrific rehearsal studio and place to network with high calibre musicians. in a city where its hard to practice this place is an oasis.

Besides having your own studio space at a monthly rental price, this is the next best thing if you are a teacher. I am a private voice instructor and I use Funkadelic to teach my students. They give me a price of $12/hr which I can't beat anywhere else in the area. The only thing is that I wish you could book on the 1/2 hour if they have the space/availability, but they are firm about not doing that. Anyway, its a good choice and a central midtown location. read more

i like funkadelic, especially the new space. i agree with everyone's comments/issues regarding sound bleed, some of the gear, etc. but i only go there to practice drums by myself, so it totally works for me. i hated their solo drum rooms at the 26th street location. way claustrophobic and dark with subpar equipment. the new place has rather decent yamaha kits and hardware that doesn't fall apart all the time. works for me! read more

Fantastic area, great staff. I cannot say enough good words about DAWN, what a great lady and what a great conversationalist. I showed up an hour early and she let me hang out and we had a great talk about the changing times, the changing culture, and the loss of appreciation amongst the current generation. Dawn should have her own talk radio show, I swear. The rest of the staff was helpful and though the auditioning process wasn't as swell as I would have hoped, just the attitude and professionalism at Funkadelic made this a great experience- oh, and the prices are beyond fair, too. Wow funkadelic has turned into the best place to practice..There huge 10,000 sq.ft. studio with 23 rooms has upgraded everthing. U can record your practices right on to a cd recorder so u can hear the great music u just played live..They also have brand new bass amps and guitar amps!! Under new management this is my favorite place in the city to practice..also the best location 37 west 26th street is a new place to be!! I do solo drums here all the time and the rates are great, plus they have a huge selection of congas you can use for free. I also rehearse with heavy bands here, and it's a bare-knuckle kind of place so it's good for that. However, if you're a sensitive singer-songwriter type or jazzer this is probably not the place for you, except during the off-peak hours, unless you don't mind being crushed like a bug by bands like mine. read more

When I first went to this studio, I felt at home. It has a nice welcoming feeling that is very hard to explain. I started coming to funkadelics studio a couple of years back and they just kept getting better at what they do. Now you can get a nice clean room for cheap, and they even have CD recorders now, I went to google.com and looked up the range price of all their equipment and I was surprised to see the good quality they have in their rooms. Amp heads are awesome, nice and clear. The P.A system is awesome and loud comes out perfect and clear toned. It is definitely, my second home. read more

A little bit cheaper than most studios, but a lot worse. Gear is weak, the rooms don't sound good, and the sound bleed between rooms and the hall is borderline unacceptable. Experienced players hear that they have a rehearsal here and consider begging off the gig outright. If cost is your only consideration, so be it, but remember: you get what you pay for. This place is fine - the other reviews complaining about noise bleedthrough from other rooms - well that's pretty typical for any practice space. The only true soundproof rooms are at recording studios, not rehearsal studios. Big difference there! As soon as you start to play, it's not an issue. Yes I agree that bleed through is annoying but it shouldn't be surprising unless you are inexperienced with commercial rehearsal spaces, or spoiled. Also, the equipment is typical too - it's not always top level gear, but when you are jamming in a 12x12 foot room, it's more than good enough. They have mid level gear that can take a beating. Places like this are invaluable for bands who can't commit to a monthly private practice space yet, for bands who only want limited practice hours, and for people who want a place to audition other musicians and try to build something from scratch, with a minimum of financial risk or fuss. If you want something better than this, the next step up is to rent a monthly lockout where you provide your own equipment. read more
