In the past few years, this tiny West SoHo theater - it seats only seventy-four - has gained a…read morereputation for being a house that welcomes innovative and often avant garde new works from rising young playwrights, although established pieces - such as the recent production of Tom Stoppard's 'Arcadia' - sometimes slip into the mix. It has proven to be a showcase not only for new acting talent, but name performers - like Amy Irving - as well. With ticket prices generally $15, it's worth schlepping to this somewhat remote location to check out what's new and exciting on the off-Broadway theatrical scene.

Last Saturday, four of us went to see Kevin McDonald's "Superstar" at the Soho Playhouse. The show…read more- a rock opera - was great and so funny! Dave Hill opened with a set beforehand. It was a 7pm show in the larger theater space (there's a smaller stage by the bar inside). Seats are first come, first serve. We came early (around 6:25pm) to wait in line outside, so we got seats up front in the third row. Heads up - with the theater lights on, it's hot in there. One of the performers (Janeane Garofolo as the obligatory rock opera narrator) even said something on stage about it (impromptu but a true statement). Another heads up - visually it won't be clear where to line up outside for entry and meet-and-greets. Keep your ears open for announcements from the hard working staff at SoHo Playhouse. They are friendly and informative, and cool peeps. If you're a history person, you'll enjoy visiting Soho Playhouse because it was the former estate of Aaron Burr, George Washington headquartered up in there for the Battle of Manhattan, Tammany Hall headquarters circa 1900s, and was a speakeasy during Prohibition. I'm looking forward to returning again for a local or international act/play/show. Check out their website for their diverse programming - including their lighthouse series and open mic nights.

It was a bare bones production, and yet we were so cramped that I felt unsafe during the performance. If there is backstage space, it was not made available to us. We were forced to dress & store our instrument cases in a hallway!! I can't believe that the architects ever spoke to real performers about their needs. It is incredibly important for architectural firms to seek input from the people who will use the facilities they design.

I saw Becoming Eve at the Abrons Arts Center yesterday, and I'm so glad I know about the theater…read morenow. The Abrons Arts Center is part of the Henry Street Settlement, which has an amazing history. The settlement was started by Lillian Wald in 1895 to help care for the poorest residents of the Lower East Side. In 1915, the Lewisohn sisters opened the Neighborhood Playhouse. Many of its earliest productions were in Yiddish, because Lillian Wald believed both that the arts were essential to wellbeing and that immigrant cultures and languages should be celebrated. The theater has been putting on important, boundary-pushing productions for decades. It was renovated in the 1990s and is still beautiful today. The theater isn't large, which makes productions feel intimate. And they continue to support artists whose work might not find support at more traditional theaters. I'm so glad that Becoming Eve found a home at the Abrons Arts Center. It was supposed to be produced last year at a different theater, but the landlord objected to the production and rejected the show. But the play being put on here may have been a blessing. It felt special to see this play, based on the memoir of Abby Stein in this space. The play was fantastic. Well-acted and moving. I think it might have been the best play I saw over my weekend in the City (I saw three, the other two on Broadway). I have tickets to see another play at the Abrons in June, and I'm more excited than ever, because this first experience was so wonderful. The Abrons is a gem.

I've grown to appreciate venues that are kind of tucked away from the standard giant venues you…read morefind in the midtown area, and Ars Nova is a great example of that. It's a small venue, with tables set up by the front of the stage, and then tiered seating towards the back. The bar is in the rear. I paid $10 for a puppet show featuring a full band. It sounds a bit silly, but it was awesome. In addition to entertainment, Ars Nova offered a free shot if I signed up for their newsletter. After that, beers were $3. Cheap entertainment, even cheaper beer. Really hard to find any fault with this place. If a band or artist you like is performing here, I'd definitely recommend making the trek to see them.. You can't get more intimate that this..unless you invite them to play in your living room.

Ars Nova is sharp. As other yelpers have commented, it's clean. Sleek. Well-maintained. Comfortable. and the staff were all courteous and efficient.

The Few at Rattlestick…read more Our first visit to New York and we had pre-booked to see The Few. Great little hidden theatre, but less than ten minutes walk from 14st station on the 123 line. We had unwittingly booked the front row, thinking this was smart. But would have definitely got stiff necks from there. But when they shut the doors (no late admissions - which is just how it should be), the friendly staff asked if we would like the vacant seats on the third row aisle. Brilliant - probably the best seats in the house. Mind you, no seat is bad in here. Very comfortable and a great view of the stage. The Few was a great play. So glad we saw it. Very impressed with the standard of everything to do with this production . Every detail was spot on - sound, lighting, set. Nothing was short of excellent. And the acting was flawless. Three actors of a very high standard made the characters totally believable. Would loved to have had the chance to chat to them, especially the guy playing the nineteen-year-old, just to see what he was really like in real life compared with the character he played. We have seen two brilliant Broadway shows this trip, including Of Mice and Men (Chris O'Dowd is so much more than the IT Crowd), but this Rattlestick production was easily up there with them. My heels are breaking down as I make my way through my cobbled West Village streets to a not quite…read morehidden red door. It is propped open tonight as the fresh spring air blows up the set of stairs that dominate my gaze. As I climb my heart beats a little faster as the sounds of chitter-chatter get louder. A night at the theatre to awaken my senses is just what the doctor ordered, and nothing cures my ills better then the New York City Off-Broadway scene. It's dark and cold, but filled with smiling faces and warm hellos. It's like your neighborhood bar in all it's glory and tonight just like every night I don't know what that sip of drink will do to my sanity. I settle into my soft plush red seat, and my body sinks back in time. On the surface it might seem old, tattered, and frayed. But more importantly when you break the surface that is Rattlestick, nothing is different from what I'm watching tonight and what one might have seen here over 15 years ago. Rattlestick Playwrights Theater has always been committed to the development and production of innovative new plays while continuing to this day to foster some of the most important new voices in American Theatre. One of those spaces in New York that a true downtown theatre lover breathes in for what it is worth. From awkwardly using the bathroom on stage during intermission, to bits of paint falling from the ceiling it still lives in a time where you can say "This Is New York Theatre" and this just might be a place where "Dreams Do Come True." It's a place where 'Wright' can do no wrong, where 'Grimm' will make you laugh till you cry, and where 'Rapp' unwraps his wrath. It is the place to fall in love with theatre allover again! Rattlestick Playwrights Theater: A reminder of what I love about New York Off-Broadway theatre. One of the most recognized but unrecognizable faces in the downtown theatre scene for over 15 years.

The theater is incredibly well-appointed with terrific acoustics, a flexible stage setup, a lighting plot that is complimentary to individualized design, a staff that is present and accommodating - and very comfortable seating. Producing remotely from LA was no hindrance, as Wild Project helped the production hit the ground running. Wild Project was a major factor in an unforgettable and positive experience.
