I liked Hector and his wife, who assisted with reservations and shampooing a great deal. I also like the comfortable and not ostentatious atmosphere of the salon. However, when I went back in to have a problem corrected - Hector didn't do a great job with the highlighting - Hector said the problem (a roots line) wasn't correctable. He also said the only styles for my hair were layers or no layers. So, regrettably won't be back. read more

No, just no. I parted my hair multiple times asking to cut the way I style it daily... nope. Asked multiple times to taper my hair so its not one bulk layer... nope. He cut 1/2 of my head at one layer and the rest angled, this is one of the worst haircuts ever and there is no way to fix this. A good practice for Hector would be to sit down with a customer and have a conversation before cutting off 6 inches and wrecking a hairstyle for at least a year until it grows out again. read more

I was referred to this place and to Hector, by a friend and former client. The staff and Hector were super friendly and we carried on conversations from the start to end of the service. I had a single process color and and blow dry done, which turned out nice and exactly how I wanted. The four stars is for the cost, which was significantly higher than I was quoted over the phone. Hector gives the best haircuts I've ever gotten. I'm pretty particular, but from the beginning I didn't have to say much for him to get it. When I used to get my hair cut by others, it would invariably grow out unevenly over time and I would need to get a hair cut due to the mop growing on my head, but with Hector it grows out perfectly. I'm picky about my hair color because it's hard to find a stylist that really understands what you want and can adapt a style tailored for you from a Pinterest picture. I called today around 3:15 and got an appointment for 5. I walked in about five minutes early and Mulan sat me down immediately. I had a great haircut (which is amazing, considering how horrible I am at describing what I want), my hair washed and a massage. I've never had a head massage before, but it's included in the price of $30 and my head feels awesome now, so I've got that going for me, which is nice. After all that, I was out of there by 5:40 ish. I moved here about a month ago, so I got incredibly lucky to find this place on my first try. I recently moved to Alexandria and as always put some research into where I wanted to get my hair cut. I get fairly simple cuts and like to keep my hair long and natural. Sometimes it's the simple things that cause misunderstandings to arise--be it too short, a bad cut, etc. Today this was not the case. I was getting really sick of how long my hair was and decided to book an appointment as soon as possible. I pretty much started cold calling hair salons today and I was expecting to book something within the next two weeks, but the rain drove in cancellations and a very nice woman named Maria put me down for less than two hours after I called. I walked in and was immediately taken to get my hair washed. It was a cozy environment, quiet and the hairdresser (I can't believe I forgot to ask for his card, but it wasn't Hector) did such a precise and nice job. He took of the exact amount off I wanted and instead of razoring angles in (which really doesn't grow out so nicely) he used shears and did a fabulous job of it. I can't speak for people who want color or nails done, but for a polished, neat and pretty haircut this is a place to go. I intend to visit them again in a few months. Also, per the other reviews, for a salon in Old Town it is quite reasonable. Just be sure to come in a little early because parking is a pain in the neck. read more

Such a great experience! I am very picky about my hair and I have become very paranoid about who handles my hair after a couple bad experiences. Having just moved to the area a couple months ago, I had to find someone to cut my hair. Looked through the reviews from my fellow Yelpers and decided to give Hector a shot and he didn't disappoint. I'm growing my hair out right now and took him a couple pictures to him to show him what I was looking for short- and long-term and he knew exactly what I was looking for and went to work. The thing that made this visit so great was how Hector interacted with me. He was very easy to converse with. He didn't make conversation feel forced. He worked efficiently without you feeling rushed. There are other things that made this place great, which other Yelpers have pointed out. Having moved from the midwest, the price is a little higher than what I'm used to, but that may simply be a geographical thing. I'll leave it at this: I've found my hair "guy" in the area. Being that it was my first time to old town, alexandria I did have minor issues with parking initially. The salon does have a very small parking area directly behind shop. Love this place!!! Great cutting - no mean feat in a town that doesn't seem to understand short hair on women... Perfect highlights, exactly what I want every time.. And a head massage thrown in which is just to die for. The cut, service and everything was great. Milan (?) cut my hair, and wasn't too chatty but friendly enough, made good recommendations, asking how I want things done along the way rather than assuming his decision is the best, which some stylists do. Wasn't very thrilled about how my hair was styled after the cut, but I rarely am, and it was fine when I restyled it. They were also considerate of my sleeping toddler, making sure a new customer was quiet so she wouldn't wake up. I would go back when I visit the area again! read more

I usually get my haircuts at Haircuttery for $18, where the success rate of a good haircut is about 80%. I went recently to G for Hair, to try something new, for a simple basic haircut. To her credit , the lady cutting my hair thought she did an ok job, and I did not complain. However, I realized as soon as the cut as over that my hair was uneven. The scissors were not used at all to check/balance my hair length, only the trimmer was used. This would be my major complaint - for $30, I simply did not get a haircut that I would expect. The finishing was not there, as I would have expected it to. Once I got home, I had to "finish" the haircut myself. Needless to say, I was dissapointed. Maybe the other people do a better job, I am not sure. But will not take any more chances. Will stick to my $18 haircut at Hair Cuttery from now on. read more

Finally I found a great place and person to get my hair done. Hector was top notch. On my first visit, I spent over 15 minutes telling him what I wanted and he patiently listened. Without knowing if I was going to come back. He asked all necessary questions to get the job done. I went in to get my roots touched up and I was very hesitant to get my hair done by anyone else other than my usual hairstylist. My hair was dyed blonde with many different shades and my natural hair color is a very dark brown, almost black. I was sure that it wouldn't be the same. Mulan fixed my roots and made the colors blend perfectly. I can't even express how ecstatic I am right now! If you go there, ask for Mulan. I promise you that you won't regret it. I signed up for a Yelp account just so I could warn other men not to have their hair butchered by Hector. He cut off one of my sideburns completely and left the other long, used a trimmer much higher on one side of my head than the other and couldn't fade in the areas where it went from shorter on the side to longer on the top. When I went to another barber to get it fixed, he asked "what the hell happened to your hair?". When my favorite hairdresser moved to NYC, my friend sent me to Hector at G for Hair. I went prepared with both my color formula and low expectations, and was pleasantly surprised on all levels! I returned to him for a second visit and am thrilled with both the color and the cut. He is meticulous, attentive, pleasant and did a great job on the blow out. The costs are very reasonable--I've paid much more for much less. Hector was also very accommodating to a last-minute request, and even fit me that same day! I will be going back to Hector, and recommend him to anyone looking for a great cut and color. It's 'a haircut'. I wanted to change up my cut for the summer. When I sat down she asked 'what do you want?' And I explained I needed some advice. I got none and ended up with a cut much shorter than I wanted on the top. I'd expect this from a Supercuts and not a higher end salon. read more

I went to G for Hair on a recommendation from some good friends of ours and was not disappointed. Hector and his wife do a great job of making you feel comfortable and accommodating to your needs. After procrastinating on scheduling an appointment one Saturday, Hector offered to let me come a half hour early before their official opening time to squeeze me in. While I was there I mentioned I hadn't had my coffee yet so I was still waking up so Hector offered to have his wife go next door to a cafe and buy me a cup! As for the actual haircut, Hector is great about listening to what you want and the end result is always satisfactory. You can obviously get a guy's haircut for less in Alexandria, but IMO, you get more than your money's worth in both customer service and quality. read more

My experience at G for Hair was awesome!! Hector was a great conversationalist and made me feel very comfortable even though I was very nervous as this was my first time at a new salon in 13 years. When I got home, I noticed that my hair seemed a little uneven due to parting my hair a different way than Hector had. I should have said something during the appointment, but when I called back Hector and Maria were so kind about it and set up an appointment for me to fix it the day after I called. They asked for no payment for the fix, but of course I insisted they take at least a tip. Prices were also very reasonable. I love my hair trim!! read more
