    #LaFoto beautiful set

I saw a performance of #LaFoto tonight. You enter through double doors of a building. A guard told me to head upstairs (knowing I was there for the show). There is adequate signage that the Gala Theatre is on the second floor. The staircase has framed photographs all the way up. The box office is through the stairwell door and to the right. There is another door to enter where an usher hands you a program. Inside to the right are a few tables with low bar stools with a high bar table. There are dedicated men's and women's restrooms on either side of the bar. There's snacks and beverages for sale. Doors opened 30 minutes before the start of the show. Ushers were friendly, helpful, professional, upbeat, focused, and coordinated. Music played on loop before the show--everything from a Gloria Estefan's "Congo" to Dua Lipa's "New Rules" to breathy Latin soul jams to 90s skateboard hip-hop. The theater space is much larger than I expected, and I marveled at how beautiful the decor, particularly the detail in the ceiling, was. The set was minimalist but astutely and aesthetically built with pleasing lighting. The show was in Spanish and subtitled! After seven years of Spanish in middle and high school, I tested myself to see how much I could understand. Much of the present tense and slower dialogue I got. The show had six actors, the play was about 1.5 hour with one 10-minute interval, the story was funny and serious at times, and the pacing was good. A few women laughed at far too many scenes than the rest of the audience, but maybe they are unnaturally jovial by birth. For a cold February Thursday, the house was about 40-50 percent full, maybe more. The seating was a bit uncomfortable, but being short I can't complain. The seats cushions are comfortable but the seats themselves are tight side by side and row to row. Your knees will touch the seat in front of yours if you're taller than 5'7". These seats are meant for sitting up straight, so don't slouch. I saw dedications to loved ones on the seats. I recommend this theater!

Caliente! GALA is predominately theater for Hispanic and Latino productions, but if you don't speak Spanish-- don't let that scare you. GALA's productions have something called "surtitles' which is basically Spanglish for subtitles. At GALA, the English is projected onto the screen in an easy to follow format. The shows at GALA are typically classical Spanish plays or musicals, as well as flamenco dances. The building in which GALA resides, the Trivoli, was originally constructed in the early 1920's and was one of the most elegant movie theaters of that day. Sometimes, you can catch some really cool stuff here like Trey Parker's "Cannibal the Musical" and a Bill and Ted spin on The Brothers Grimm.

We had our wedding reception in the North Hall on November 14, 2015, and everything went fantastic!…read more We had about 120 guests at our reception, and there was plenty of room for more. Pros: 1) Price. For venues in DC, especially for its size, North Hall is VERY reasonably priced. They even offered us a discount for 100% payment at the time of booking. 2) Flexibility. North Hall does not have any "preferred" caterers, vendors, etc. Other venues may have an inexpensive reservation fee, but require you to book their caterers at $100+ a plate. As long as you/they have the required permits, you can book whomever suits your wedding. In our case, we had Chipotle catering! 3) Location. Located in the heart of Capitol Hill, North Hall is walking distance to the Capitol, 8th Street, and the Eastern Market metro station. We had our ceremony at a nearby church, and our guests walked a few short blocks to the North Hall. Additionally, the surrounding neighborhood is both historic and beautiful. 4) Responsiveness. Ms. Aiken was our primary POC, and was extremely helpful in ensuring we had the proper permits to serve alcohol and food at North Hall, making the "paperwork" side of our reception very easy. Additionally, a DC employee was present on site for our reception to help regulate temperature and lighting throughout the evening, which was very helpful! (Minor) Con: 1) Booking Hours. My memory is a little foggy as I reach back to our initial booking, but I believe the "base" hours are from 6pm-1am, and any time outside of that window comes at an additional cost. Additionally, the North Hall has to remain open to the public until 3pm, meaning that, while your vendors can set up prior to 3pm, the public still has access to the Hall. For our wedding, we reserved the North hall starting at 3 and had vendors work quickly to set things up for our 4:30 cocktail hour. Overall, North Hall is an incredible place to hold events and definitely a steal for the price! If you're looking for a flexible venue with a historic feel, look no further. We highly recommend it!

The brick exterior coupled with the large white-walled interior provided the perfect "blank canvas" to backdrop our event. We hosted nearly 100 people and had plenty of room for a live band and bar. The reason this review earned three stars was because of venue management. An important aspect of North Hall is that they will not let you do any setup prior to the event unless you pay per hour. As an example: our event started at 5pm and we had to pay 500$ more to start setup at 3pm. The real issue arose when we were informed that we could not leave anything in a closet or kitchen in order to make the "day-of" prep easier. Management allowed absolutely nothing from entering or remaining in the space despite there being no event prior to our reception. On a positive note, the two hour setup window provided a testament to how amazing our vendors were; they created a beautiful space with no help from North Hall. The management induced plenty of undue stress by being unclear of what permits were needed for the event. They went on to remind us with little time to prepare. This issue manifested itself one week prior to our wedding day, where our wedding coordinator, my wife, and myself scrambled to get permits for food, alcohol, etc. Overall, North Hall is truly lovely, but future customers should be aware that this venue is fortified by the bureaucracy of Washington D.C. Much like your local trip to the DMV, illogical policies and the lack of regard for the individual reign supreme. Weddings are stressful and emotional, no one should have to deal with the inefficiencies of government and the shortcomings of bureaucrats on their special day.

We decided to stay and check it out, @1pm on a Sunday. Brunch is from 11a-4pm. There was only 1 other person for brunch, when we arrived. There was a DJ was that playing super loud music. Mostly rap music. The food was good. Fresh salad, fruit, meats etc. Unlimited mimosas was $25 per person. We could only order 1 flavor at a time, which there was about 8 flavors. They were good By 3pm, the place was more so filling up. What was crazy was at 4pm, the workers started breaking down the buffet-- quickly!! A group that had arrived @ 3 were caught off guard that brunch was ending. The workers did provide everyone with TAKE HOME Boxes, so we filled our boxes as fast as they were breaking it down lol Hookah guy arrived, think it was a total of $68. The hookah was good Gratuity is automatically included. Our waitress was GREAT! Only thing I didn't like, the place had her walking around in a tight leopard body suit, with her arms out, like this was the Playboy mansion. It was cold in there. I would come back for brunch - just know, there was not a mention of a Buffet brunch online

Online the place looks great and interesting so we decided to hit it up around 9pm because it doesn't close until 2am. So when we walked in the place was pitch black and the vibe was really off. We had to pay $20 a person to enter which at first I was confused because I thought this place was games, bars, music, and vibes...not at all. So we were walking around and the crowd I'll just say wasn't the type I wanted to be around. Only one bar was open and the music was weird. So we decided to leave and when I asked the person who was taking the money what was going on tonight they said an event. Now, this event was not posted anywhere on their website or social media. So I would caution going at night or call beforehand because I don't think I would want to come back because it was nothing like it is portrayed online.
