This is the second year my friends and I have tried the garden hot tub reservations. On one of the coldest nights of this year we braved the weather and found out we had the ENTIRE whole place to ourselves. As in, not just our reserved hot tub area, the whole garden and indoor hall. The servers took care of us and we had a blast! They provide towels and robes and a bottle of champagne with a toasty fire. The reservation includes a changing room and lounge seating. I love hanging out at Hook Hall DC. I've been here a few times for different types of events. The space holds a good amount of people which is nice and they have an outdoor bar and seating for the warmer days! I was here for a music event yesterday and this place was a whole vibe. I've had their food in the past which is your typical American food but sometimes food vendors come through depending on the event that's being held. Hook Hall is not the move for a special event. I planned an event here for the cherry blossom theme, booking and paying weeks in advance for a cabana. I had conversations with Hook Hall's "Moments Makers" team about how special and important this was to me. Well, let me tell you, they did not make my moment. I got a call a few days before my party, telling me that the cabanas would not be cherry blossom themed but would still have the winter theme. Disappointing, but fine. I can't move my event in that timeframe. We get there and I was given one tent nearly 30 people. There were no cabanas anywhere. I was practically in tears. My friend who has visited Hook Hall several teams was shocked, as she had never seen the tents before. She said it's always been cabanas. Other friends had noted poor experiences here, so it's clearly a trend. We had to beg to use another one. Interestingly enough, cherry blossom cabanas were available two days later. We had to beg for service which was absolutely abysmal. Not all that friendly and extremely slow, with forgotten orders. I stuck to champagne and heard the mixed drinks weren't bad. I tried a pretzel and it was not good at all. It was clearly frozen and was served pretty much in the same state. Yes, this place is cute and if you just go and hang without planning an event here, it's probably fine. But the management, Moment Makers team, and the staff really did not make my moment at all. I hope they are able to replace the entire team, because it is a fun place but the execution is awful. Website is also terrible, which is uncalled for in 2023. If you want to feel like an afterthought and understand that you might not get anything you were promised, Hook Hall is the place. We love this spot, especially since it's kid friendly and they often have kid activities for the weekend like magicians, balloon animal artists and other activities. Looks like my dodgeball days at Hook Hall have come to an end.... They can no longer host the games there, so I'll only be going on my own time or for special events. The staff were always friendly and the option to get that all you can drink thing was always there. Their tacos never miss when I want a quick bite, and the food is never slow to come out. It became especially convenient when, during the games, the bar on the event side would actually be staffed -- though the water canister wasn't always filled. But they would fill it if you asked! The layout of the benches and tables made for plenty of customers to come in and hang out if desired. And the turf side stays creative with their decor. I hope to have more opportunities to go to Hook Hall in the near future, they're a great spot! read more

Decided to book this place for their hot tub which is $300 and they call me the night before to tell me it's not working. Come to find out this place doesn't have the authority to operate a hot tub in DC so they cancelled my reservation and asked if I'd like a cabana instead which isn't a third of the hot tub costs. The operations manager Jackson tells me that he would give me a bar tab with the remaining money from the hot tub on a bar tab, ok cool. I purchased one round of shots which was only $60. He advised me on the phone that the cabana was only $100. That's $160 total. I've contacted him to get a refund and no response. Don't book this place because it's a damn scam. The place was empty and there wasn't shit today outside of Jenga. My experience was honestly awful outside the free champagne. We left immediately after and didn't even use the entire 2 hour slot. I have written very few reviews, but a year after our wedding, I feel compelled to save, even just one couple, from having to deal with these people. We had a great wedding...in spite of experience with the management at Hook Hall. Our experience started with, months after booking our wedding, and the day before we sent out save the dates, they emailed us to let us know that they had double-booked the venue, and they were rescheduling us. We should've cut and run then, but alas. Throughout the rest of the experience, they were incompetent, unresponsive, rude, and constantly trying to upcharge us. They did not execute a single task successfully and dropped the ball with multiple vendors so that we were scrambling two weeks before our wedding. On the day of our wedding, they were actively rude to our guests and us, to the point that several guests asked about it. If I can provide one anecdote that summarizes the experience -- they offer, as one of their packages, to hire someone to do the sound. Within the course of planning the wedding, they fired their in-house sound guy, and told us they had a new guy. Then, on the day of the wedding, the guy showed up, set up the sound without testing it, and left. This would've been fine since we opted to have our own music playing, except literally not a single speaker worked. Luckily, our band brought their own speakers, but when it was time to give toasts and for the dance floor, the speakers wouldn't even turn on. When I left my wedding table to ask our wedding day-of coordinator, Gretchen, for help, while my wife and guests were all confused and wondering why nothing at our wedding was working (by this point the power had gone out), she shrugged her shoulders and said, "You know what, this is what happens when you cheap out on sound." Hook Hall has one of the most unique and best bar setups in DC, with an indoor and outdoor area. Hook Hall seasonally changes its setup, featuring designs such as ski chalets and firepits in the winter and cabanas in the summer. I recently went for a friend's birthday party and sat in the outdoor area. The firepits worked well and their seasonal hot mulled wine was delicious. However, when I tried to order food, they were out of several things, including the wings and tacos. I ended up ordering the pretzel with beer cheese, which was fantastic and tasted like it was made in-house (even if it wasn't). The service also could have been a bit faster in delivering the food, as my group was the only one at Hook Hall at the time. Nonetheless, I look forward to my next visit to Hook Hall! read more

I'm a teetotaler so it is not often I write reviews of bars. But my friends with kids invited me and my kid here to join Hook Hall's Sunday morning (10am - 12pm) Frozen sing along / dance party event. It was awesome and the ticket for the event was only $5 per family. They also sold food/drinks appreciated by both the kids (pancakes, PB&J, etc) and the adults (mimosas and coffee). There was plenty of room both outside and inside. They had space heaters and tents outside so even though it was a little drizzly and chilly, it was still nice in the patio space. Inside, the ping pong table and corn hole was nice. And there's tons of room to wander around so it doesn't feel crowded. There are giant Connect Four games outside too that were a big hit. The performers playing Elsa and Anna did an excellent job. In addition to doing the standard Frozen songs, they did other hit songs like the Freeze Dance song, and they also had a time halfway through where every kid could take a photo with them. They offered hugs and high fives to all the kids when the event ended. Basically just a chill place where kids can be entertained, burn some energy, and parents can socialize and enjoy a beverage. Checked out this establishment because I was attending an event. Unfortunately, I couldn't try other items on the menu because they were only selling brunch items at the time. Not being a big fan of breakfast foods, I settled on the cheese quesadilla. There really was nothing special about it other than it probably was the lowest priced item on the menu ($6). We came here for a friends party for the cherry Blossom theme which she booked and paid inside but it was taken by a charter school fundraiser so we went outside and since she is a wheelchair user, she was struggling getting in and around outside so we almost left. The decorations in the outdoor area maybe since it was a rainy day seemed sad. We talked to several staff who did not really know what to do but promised to do something and they put us in the side bar inside. The side bar bartender was wonderful and the drinks were great but the accessibility and our reservation was not well communicated so our friend had to get inside through a carpet over the step to make it look accessible and left with the portable ramp in the front entrance that likely was not up to code so she slid off and was in pain for a week. Apparently, according to Google there is or was a side street entrance that we did not know about and was not communicated to the staff who admitted accessibility is a challenge. The tacos, especially the vegan chorizo, were disappointing but the pretzels were great. We are not very likely to come back unless we are invited since there are so many good spots in town. If any wheelchair users come here or anyone else needing step free entry, be sure to communicate with staff or manager who are aware of the specific accessibility instructions and be very careful and slow if using the portable ramp. read more

We tried the holiday drinks which were delicious as well. The service was great but I don't expect nothing but amazing service each time I go. Our bartender Omar was very attentive. Hook hall seems to be clutch for a chill spot to hang out from midday into the night. Our party had a fun time, but thats mostly because we booked a cabana for the initial part of our visit. Its not a necessity, as there is free 'garden' table seating (on a first come basis), but if you plan on being there for a while on a really hot day or rainy day, or windy day, you'll be much more comfortable in a cabana. Plus, the cabana comes with personal table service, but the garden seating is only self serve. They also have a "tea room" and "captain's quarter", which are larger cabanas that are meant to host up to 10 to 20 ppl. This seems like a fun option if you want the privacy, but it seems a little secluded off, and not too great if you like to people-watch. Also, based on other reviews and my own experience, the self service portion should be a little more clearly laid out for guests. Seems like the outdoor bar and the indoor bar only serve certain things...and I didn't understand the algorithm of which bar serves what and when to whom. I tried to order a few old fashion FROZEN drinks (which is on the menu) to treat my friends to one last round before we head out..but Hook Hall is not making them..so maybe that should be displayed somewhere or taken off the menu. The food is "bar food", but honestly much better than expected. The service was kind, and attentive, but I could see how it could become 'wobbly' if it got really busy. And the music selection could be a little more diverse overall. My party mentioned that the bathrooms were very clean, so that's a huge plus. Overall, I like the decor and the different themes...some are better than others, but its fun concept. Visited Hook Hall after work on a Tuesday. The outdoor space was super cute and the drink I ordered was good. I also ordered the nacho fries which were decent. I was disappointed with the food selection and portion sizes. My friends ordered tacos and they had to be the smaller tacos I've ever seen. They don't have waiters so you have to order at the bar. They also didn't really have a happy hour menu or discount. If you are considering hosting an event at this establishment then DON'T. They make you pay a ton of money upfront for the bar guarantee, do not give you quality service and will not set you up for success. I traveled from Atlanta in hopes to throw a premier event and feel like I got scammed. Since they already had my money, I had to go with the flow. Here's the email that I sent to Natasha (manager) post event with all my concerns (PROCEED WITH CAUTION!): Thank you for letting me host my event at your space. I wanted to address the following concerns in detail: -refund deposit should show $3000 not $2000; my original receipt (attachment 1) already has $1000 charge for a refund so the bar minimum getting dropped by $2000 should be added to the original $1000 making it $3000 -5 security were billed at $30/hour for 6 hours. Only 3 showed up. Also the event was not set up until 3:30pm and ended at 8:15pm. Security line item should be reduced to roughly $450 give or take -The limited security hindered the team from monitoring patrons from the outside that were coming in. There were dogs brought from outside in which some of my guest mentioned they were allergic too and left. Also, there were patrons from the outside that brought their kids in and they were running around playing tag while the event was going on (kind of killed the vibe). No where in my contract does it say that animals or kids can roam the building while the event in which was private is taking place. -By no means was the floor plan followed which was evident by the way the staff was arranging the furniture and when asked about the floor plan was clueless. This included the stage and long bar by the entrance which was initially not set up at all/in the wrong place. There were also people still eating with children past the event starting. There seemed to be a lack of concern that my event was even taking place. -To expedite set up, I assisted with moving furniture. This was shocking being that the floor plan overly stressed to get back to you and your team. We had to cancel the formal part of the book signing because of the delayed set up on addition to patrons that were wrapping up eating their food. -The speakers were no were to be found initially and ended up having technical difficulties in which one of the speakers were not even working. This further delayed starting the event because the dj's were confused on whether or not their personal equipment was malfunctioning. Lastly, it would have been nice to have my event on the website or posted on the story as I see others are (I see the family day is on the website which makes sense about the kids running around my event). read more

Very cute spot to just grab drinks and a small meal with friends. FOOD!! Everything was soooo good. The loaded tater tots was hot when arriving, the sauce and pulled pork was a perfect combination to top them off. Pizza was delicious. Hot, not too greasy, cooked to perfection. I felt a need to write a review so no one makes the same mistake I did. We went to watch the DC vs. Baltimore football game on a Sunday and not only was the restaurant unable to put it on TV, they were unwilling to let me switch inputs to try to put the local game on antenna. This is the most watched game today. The beer garden across the street is packed with fans outside. Almost no one is outside at Hook Hall. Additionally, their kitchen is closed, which is fine since you can order in, but they really need to be able to put a game on or at least willing to try to for their customers. There was no music due to COVID restrictions, but the staff stated they would be fully open the following week. Staff was nice! Tried their cherry blossom themed pop up and it was cute, we went after it had rained but it was still enjoyable and we were able to sit outside. The service was a bit slow but there a lot of folk though so we understand. The bathrooms were nice and 8/10 cleaned, the food was good but I do not recommend the dumplings, 1/10. The service was friendly and seating was great too, we didn't wait that long either while they dried the seats. Hubby and I patronized this spot for the 2023 Rock the Core festival. I am a huge fan of hard ciders so I gravitated to this wonderful weekend outing. Perfect environment for a happy hour meetup. I purchased tickets to attend what I thought would be a PG-13 acrobatics show at this venue. When I arrived, first I noticed that it is placed it the middle of a neighborhood where you do NOT want to get caught slipping- okay! We turned down the wrong street and didn't feel safe at all. We drove around for twenty minutes before finding parking. Upon entering the venue, you are smacked with a very foul odor. It smells like ass and dirty mops. We paid $65 for "premiere seating" only to learn that it was a free for all and there were no seats in our "premiere" section! WTF? As mentioned, I believed, based on the lack of pertinent information in the event description, I was coming to see a regular, PG-13 burlesque show featuring acrobats, balanced with both men and women; however, the part of the show I saw (bc I left early) was 95% men wearing thongs and g-strings, legs spread wide open with the outlines of genitals on full display, performing acrobatics and simulating sexual acts on each other in high heels!!! Uh... no where in the description did it mention anything like this!!! And I went back and read through the description two additional times while avoiding watching the performance. I did not intend to attend such a show and felt that a more accurate description of the event should have been offered in advance, so I could have made an informed decision. I was uncomfortable with the partial nudity and sexual simulations, so my friend and I left early. I am highly disappointed and would not recommend this venue. read more

This was my second visit to Hook Hall- last year went to the cherry blossom experience, sat outside where the set up was beautifully done, loved the fire pit tables. This time checked out the 'Cocktail Club' after friends that i referred to the venue raved about their experience. Walking in, I wasnt greeted, i only spotted an employee by his hat- he was looking at me the whole time but i had to initiate interaction which i thought was weird. But that was the only low point. Entering the hidden door on the wall, Gregg and Mick were warm and welcoming (unlike a prior melanated reviewer mentioned.. I HAD to kill the 'racist' narrative as Gregg (the partner) is a black man LOL. Only Mick made the drinks, Gregg seemed to be there more for conversation which i appreciated. My friend won a free cabana rental that came with free champagne. I was excited to go. The ambiance is great. Beautiful seating arrangements. There's also a fan inside the cabana. Service was great. We could order through our server or online. He made sure we had everything we needed. We had champagne, sangria, and pepperoni pizza. It was all good. I would definitely come back. An excellent family-friendly weekend spot! Perfect for large groups of any kind. Plenty of ways to elevate your experience by reserving an air-conditioned space, but great without it as well. Large games and fun decor make this a go-to for hanging with friends. Food comes in appetizer sized portions so keep that in mind while drinking. All orders are taken at the bar - no QR code service, which is something I hope to see here in the future. Overall, super fun and will return! I like hook hall. They have a fun vibe and I like how the switch up the themes every so often to keep this place fun and fresh. They also get new food trucks to come and serve food. I got a barbecue pulled pork with coleslaw and Carolina barbecue sauce. It was good especially since I was day drinking and starving. The bar tenders are super friendly and nice. I love Hook Hall, and it is always so much fun! This Saturday was one of the best times I've ever had here--excellent ambiance and fabulous drinks! Also our bartenders, Kel and Niaria are two of the most wonderful people we have ever met and made our experience the best one I have ever had at any outdoor beer hall in DC.
