I was apprenticed in body art tattooing for many years prior to learning permanent makeup in order to be confident of my equipment and the great variations that exist with skin-types, equipment and pigments. I have worked with plastic surgeons, dermatologists, aestheticians and in salons. When training anyone to do this I have required they have a tattooing background and then an intensive two-week course. Please beware that most who do this in salons and malls have only a very limited training. I immediately text their salon number and a lash tech immediately responded to get me booked. I showed up to my appointment and Judith was scheduled to do my lashes. The inside of the salon is BEAUTIFUL! Very clean, white, pink and shiny, high ceilings, a very regal feel. I checked in and walked into Judith's room and she started with a consultation to figure out what kind of lashes I wanted. I had never had lash extensions before so I wasn't sure but she explained all my options well. I ended up going with the volume lashes- doll eye. I think she used a D Curl and .7mm. There was a not on the door that said if it's locked to call the number on the door. I did, no answer. Mind you it's after 9pm, dark and all the other businesses are closed. I called several times, finally got her on the phone- she said she was finishing up with someone and to wait. 15 minutes later (25 minutes after I got there) she finally came to the door. No apology, she just waved me in and told me to strip down. At first she was so nice and promised everything would be the way I wanted. I was there for a spray tan requested by the bride of the wedding I was to be in. Big mistake! Michelle sprayed me herself all along while I directed her where she was missing and where there were lines. The entire time she said "don't worry" "you be fine". NOT FINE. The next day after I followed all her instructions for showering I looked like I had been playing in a muddy creek. Streaked, stained, uneven and not the color she promised me. I went to her shop the next day to show her, but she very rudely told me no refunds, no way, not never. That it looked fine. In the meantime my friends and family members agreed with me that the spray tan was not fine. They even told me I looked dirty on my legs and arms. Honestly, it didn't prepare me to have confidence in starting to perform procedures on people's faces. It's my art, and I want to show the world that I am skillful and educated. I have HIGH standards!! Gina Maya's permanent makeup school offered a five-day course program. This five-day program is almost the same as the 5-day program requirement in New Jersey, which has the highest standard in permanent makeup education in the USA. She helped me enhance my skills and increase my level of education about PMU. Some schools take your money! So beware. Ask the other schools if they are dual-licensed. Gina is licensed by the Illinois State Board of Education to teach as well as licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health. What are some of the things you get with Gina? She discusses color theory, machines, anesthetics, skin types, your client's health history, skin conditions, and different options to provide permanent makeup. You will learn microblading, shading, and hand tapping. It's a lot!! The best part was Gina allowed her students to retake the theoretical portion of the courses that a student needed a refresher with at no additional cost. You have to let her know you want to relearn or do a refresher. She will allow you to do your model's touch-up skills portion, which is usually not the case with other PMU schools. As a student of Gina, you have the opportunity to start your business in her classroom and rent a bed/space from her daily or monthly to get your business started as long as it doesn't interfere with the courses she provided. I thought this was a fantastic opportunity for anyone who may not have a space in their own home or isn't ready to rent their own space. However, if you decide not to rent a bed from her, as her student, she provides support and assistance through voice message, text message, or phone calls. She may not respond immediately because she's teaching, but if you text her 911 or call her because you have an actual lousy situation, she will stop the course to review your case and help you. If you need additional help, talk to Gina, and she will work on a mentorship plan with you. Just ask her, and she will find a way to make it work for you both! Gina's support goes above, and beyond the average first two microblading courses I have taken. I am so happy someone from a Facebook group recommended her to me. She is a highly dependable instructor. She is a real support system in this very independent industry. She continues to help me to keep going. I finally opened my own business for permanent makeup. Gina is REALLY CARING! She really wants you to be successful! I have said so much already, but do not hesitate to reach me if you have any questions about my experience. One eyebrow was much darker than the other and the shape not the same needing to be a bit higher. They look uneven in every way and I now HAVE to put on brow pencil every day. What a waste of money! I contacted Carli 3 times with no response back and finally gave up.
