Not far from Halifax lies a little gem in Hubbards Nova Scotia. It is about a pleasant (in good…read moreweather) 30 minute drive. It is a gem because of its natural scenic beauty, quiet and relaxed atmosphere and incomparable tranquility. A great place for an afternoon or evening getaway. The service was prompt and efficient and the prices fair. I had the fish and chips that were unfortunately just average. Not to the standard that I expected for a restaurant of this calibre situated metres from the water. The problem is that they use frozen fish which no matter how well prepared will not come close to fresh. If you are not used to the real thing, then this will most certainly suffice. But I am and this did not. Lastly, the coleslaw was tasteless.

Not…read moremuch more than a 30 minute drive from Halifax, it's located on the shore of Hubbards Cove, overlooking the water. A large deck outside, a snug space inside, with a just amazing view. Food wise, we went for a shared starter of garlic shrimp. Large, succulent shrimp with a very nice sauce. For mains, the wife ordered the seafood crepes while I tried the chowder. The latter is easily main course sized and both choices had generous amount of very fresh local seafood, including some large lobster pieces. They have two Italian Pinot Grigios, and some decent local beers. Our waitress was truly delightful. Attentive, engaging and always on the look out for our needs. The Inn also has some lovely looking rooms up above the restaurant, so if you're visiting the south shore from away, this should certainly be on your list. Prices are quite reasonable too. Only open in season, which ends sometime in October, we will definitely be back when the snow finally melts.

So are the shakes. It's also a great place to stop for an ice cream cone, or to pick up a loaf of fresh baked bread or squares (we love the date squares especially). The staff are kind too.

Signs announced internet and phone were down-cash only. We've been traveling on debit/credit cards, and asked if they would accept USD. Yes, but only at face value; unwilling to do the conversion (25% markup). Ok, sure. Ordering dinner our server offered a swap of fries for a side salad, explaining there was a mark-up only after I ordered (another 5% markup). Dinner arrived, with only 1 pre-packaged tartar sauce. When I asked for 1-2 more I was informed the charge is $.25/each. Message received The food was pretty good, but this place is NOT for tourists. The owner/staff doesn't want you here-or at least doesn't want US tourists. Staff quashed our every attempt at friendly interaction. They obviously don't understand that the MAGA idiots don't travel, especially out of the country. I get folks dislike the policies of US leadership, but believe me we're not fans either. Being tarred with the anti US brush was a disconcerting and unhappy experience. Let the locals enjoy their meal without tourists while you try something more welcoming
