With new owners the quality is just not there. Fish tastes like it has been frozen. No longer the light, flakey texture of fresh fish. The chips are refried and are a chore to eat. Fish was great. Chips were over cooked & rock hard. Tartar sauce was basically mayo. But the biggest issue was the plastic cutlery that was so flimsy that you couldn't pierce the chips without the tines in the forks almost breaking. My husband and I stopped here for lunch. We had the lobster roll and fries ($27.99 each). They were delicious, but a bit spendy, lol. You get to chose between mayo or the special house sauce. I got the latter, while my husband, who is more of a purist when it comes to lobster rolls, chose the former. The special house sauce is just a bit sweeter. It's still cream-based and honestly just tasted like a sweeter mayo. The rolls were a bit smaller than I anticipated, but they were filled with lobster and were quite tasty. The roll was lightly toasted. It's the size of a small hotdog bun. I liked that it was just lobster and no filler (although truth be told, I don't mind a bit of celery or cucumber filler, just no fake crabmeat filler, please). There was a single piece of lettuce in the roll, I guess to make us feel better that we are eating some vegetables, haha. The fries were regular cut fries, bordering on thick cut. They were hot and crispy and had the skins on. I enjoyed them, but my favourite type of fry remains shoestring ;) Service was courteous, friendly and welcoming. We got our food to go, but then decided to eat on one of the patio tables out front. Staff came out to ask us how everything was, which I thought was really nice. During our visit a few months back to Halifax, we tried Freddie's Fish House. Honestly, we were blown away by the freshness and flavorful nature of every dish we ordered. Although I had the lobster roll, their fish and chips were an absolute standout-- easily the best I've ever had. The experience was so delightful that I'd happily make the trip from Toronto just to savor their exceptional dishes again. The haddock has an excellent batter crust that doesn't try to be the star of the show, it really showcases the delicious haddock and has a satisfying crunch. The chips appear to be fresh cut potatoes that are cooked to golden crispness and have great flavour. The lobster roll is quite pricey considering the amount of lobster you get. $18.99 yes... for $27.99, I was expecting a lot more lobster. The roll itself was tasty. The staff was friendly and the food was prepared quickly. I enjoy well made fish and chips & this place is great, however, the inside of the restaurant is not well kept. This restaurant opened in 2005 and I don't think it has been cleaned since. That alone turned me off and I wouldn't go back. read more

Okay quick write up as I'm waiting for the family at the local Walmart ...on our East Coast road trip we were determined for a fish and chips meal. We were stuck in traffic and didn't get to the place till about 635pm and this place closes at 7pm. Many places would have rolled their eyes if we came if they saw a family of 6 come in last minute but the staff welcomed us with open arms! Freddie's Fantastic Fish and Chips loves up to their name with some amazing fish and chips served with East Coast hospitality.l! We ordered a 10 piece Family meal which came with a delicious lightly battered Haddock fish, a bunch of hand cut fries (with the skin on!!!!), coleslaw, and gravy. All this for $55! The portions were HUGE and was probably some of the best fish and chips we've ever had Another star was the Seafood Chowder that had big chunks of scallops, lobster, fish and shrimp. So much goodness in a bowl! The best part of this meal was the staff. So nice and accommodating to us when we were there as it really makes the meal so much more special. Fredie's is tucked away off of Chain Lakes Dr in a big box commercial district, which is kind of a shame as it would fit in perfectly in a more touristy location like near the waterfront. However, it's nicely decorated, clean and bright. There are a few outside tables that unfortunately don't provide much view or sunshine for most of the day, none the less it's a nice option. I had the two piece fish and chips, well priced and very tasty. The batter was a bit heavy and soft, not the light puffed up crunchy stuff I'm used to. Reminded by of fish and chips I had in Dublin, maybe it's a different style, but it had nice flavour and the fish seemed fresh. Service is super friendly and helpful, I watched serval tables being served, pretty consistent. Menu is broad but fried seafood focused, but that's what you came for! It's not licensed, which is too bad as I always like a nice cold craft beer with my dish and chips. Food here was great! Loved the lobster rolls. It looks quite small but it is actually very filling as they use a lot of lobster which I really appreciate. The ladies working here are all really lovely and very nice people. They were happy to serve us and were very open to talking and were welcoming. There was something wrong with our order and when we notified them they fixed the issue right away and even gave us some complimentary onion rings which was nice of them. I had heard tales of Fredie's for a while, but I'm so rarely out in Bayer's Lake and with someone who I don't mind inconveniencing or isn't allergic to fish, that I've never been able to try their deep fried wares. That is until one rainy day while out to renew my license. After a pleasantly quick process at the DMV and a short bus ride and wet walk after, I was in the tiny corner of the strip mall which FFFH occupies. There's probably just 12 seats combined at the two counters, which isn't surprising at a place which likely caters to the lunch crowd in Bayer's. As soon as you walk in, you can smell the stuff that clogged arteries are made of. Two friendly ladies were manning the cash and deep fryers, and a chalkboard menu above the kitchen displayed a tight menu with the usual suspects of the sea. I was happy to see that they had a sampler sized for one, with one piece of fish, four scallops, clams and fries, which I quickly ordered. Alas, in my haste I didn't notice that you could upgrade your fries to Newfie fries (dressing and gravy on top), but once I got my plates, I didn't feel so bad. That's no typo, I got plates, plural. My two plates arrived within a few minutes, and although they were just your usual paper plates, this was a lot of food. One was completely covered in fries, while the other was full of clam strips and had the scallops and fish on top. I'm sure if I had dressing and gravy in addition to this that I would've fallen into an immediate food coma right there on my stool. The fries were hand-cut and had a nice golden brown colour. Despite the frequent mediocrity of hand-cut fries at places that think not being frozen automatically makes it a good fry, and then they go and under-cook their fries, Fredie's cooks know what they're doing with a deep fryer. Crispy until the last fry, they're helped out in the flavour department by adding some salt. The clam strips were perfect - wonderfully crunchy batter with lots of nooks and crannies, giving way to moist, slightly sweet clam meat. I typically avoid clam strips, but I was quite glad that I didn't this time. Covered in a very light breading that was more of a dusting, the scallops were also cooked perfectly. Thick and succulent, my only minor complaint is that the breading just awkwardly dissolved when I popped each in my mouth; something more substantial to add some crunch and a contrast of texture would work much better. Completing my plates of carbs and fish was the battered haddock. A bit larger than the palm of my hand, it's a respectable size that wasn't going to overwhelm my quickly filling belly. It looked like they employ a double fry method with the fish here as there were several pieces on a rack that looked lightly cooked, while mine was a much more typical golden brown. It certainly works, as the batter was very crispy, and not soggy inside of it. The fish flaked easily with a plastic fork and had a mild fish flavour. This is some very good fried fish. It may have taken a while to get out there and I got fairly wet in the process, but it was well worth it. A lot of places set the bar too high in their claims about their food, but Fredie's is definitely fantastic. read more

No doubt it is FANTASTIC. If you're looking for a super clean fish house with tasty huge portions and for very decent prices, this is the place. The platter comes in two plates; one with clam, Haddock and scallops the other full of fries. Fresh, yummy, plenty. Staff are so nice you feel like sitting for hours watching how they treat customers. Chowder is also a popular pick here. Must try when you visit the Maritimes. Best place I've gotten fish and chips in the East Coast. I absolutely loved it. I went just as they opened up so that I could catch some food for the train at around 11am. The place is cute, clean and charming - it has a progression and its story all over the wall of how they came to be to where they are now. The person at the counter was quite friendly and I believe it is a family run business as I heard the people in the kitchen talk to each other in familiar tones. The food was done fast and their lunch special is fantastic - I got two pieces of fish with chips for less than $10 and they were quite generous with the fries. Their batter was amazing - quite a few of the places I've been to have had sweet batters but Fredie's had an savoury one and it wasn't too thick so it didn't taste like I was just eating half batter half fish. It was crunchy and seasoned just right. The person who took my order wrote it on a notepad so it definitely seems like a small family owned restaurant where people know your name. My mom and I really enjoyed the lobster rolls but my dad disagree. We also ordered some fries, a side order of the seafood soup and the fried seafood platter. We normally visit there every month or so. We have found the food good but in our visit yesterday it wasn't up to the standard we expected. We only recognized two people in the staff and the owner wasn't there but we understand that. We managed place our order, get a table and waited to receive it. Two piece and three piece fish and chips with coleslaw. When we received it the first thing the wife stated was that the fries weren't fully cooked. One piece of the wife's fish still had "soggy" batter inside. That happen's and we accepted it. We mentioned it to the server when she came to take our plates away. She offered to refund the cost but we declined to take any refund. Will it stop us from going back? Not likely. I have to give an update to my review. Tonight we went out for supper. Fish and Chips were on the brain. This particular location is both Fish and Chips with Pizza (Big Reds) on the menu as well. The place was not overly packed which was nice. We ordered, it took a while to get the food, but well worth the wait. Piping hot , fresh fish, sizzling home made fries, brought to our table. Lemon was offered as well as drinks. The place started to get busy, so we were happy we went when we did. The owner comes out from behind the counter and goes around to each table to ask , "How is everything, is there anything else we can get you". This is exceptional customer service. As usual the order was so large , we had to get part of it to take home. The pieces of fish are a large portion. But, as it happens, we also had to take some pizza back home for the hungry mouths, who are not big fish and chip fans. We ordered two medium pizza's. The deal here is buy one get the second for 1/2 price. Not bad , and the pizza was welcomed as we came home. Now I am not a big fan of the Big Red's Pizza at all. It is ok, but would not go out of my way for it. My five star is for the Fish and Chips and customer service. read more

When I arrived I was met by a smiling lady who served me kindly and promptly. I ordered a lobster roll without chips ($2 off the regular price) for lunch. The lobster roll turned out to be a white bun about 7 or 8 inches long with fresh lettuce and dressing on the bottom. The roll was then filled to the brim and moreso with big chunks of lobster meat, and that is what made it extra special for me. I have never had a lobster roll so full of lobster meat. Fantastic indeed! The other day I was craving fish & chips, or more precisely the crunchy batter outside the deep fried fish (Don't judge me), so I searched Yelp and came across Murray W's review on Fredie's. I was also pleasantly surprised that it's in Bayer's Lake. It's a big deal to go out with 3 kids under the age of 4. So we came prepared,mentally, knowing Fredie's has limited seating. We were ready to eat in the van if it's too crowded. Well, crowded it was but thankfully we found seats. There was even a high chair for my 16 months old. We ordered the Seafood Sampler for One. It came with a bed of clams, 4 scallops and 1 fish, plus a separate plate of home fries. Wow was the first word came out of my mouth when I saw these glorious plates. The clams were huge! Scallops were done right, not chewy or stringy. The fish had that crunchy batter that I was craving for and the meat was flakey and sweet! My husband went on and on about the fish. He loved it too. Do you like seafood? Do you like deep fried goodness? Then you will love Fredie's. It's a diner-style fish house that has a DELICIOUS seafood sampler. Seating can be limited depending on when you arrive. The staff is very friendly, the food is fresh and yummy, and it's a local business. They seem to have a lot of regular customers, and I can see why! They didn't mind me bringing in my skateboard either, so that's a plus. Love it. I'll be back. Today, it was way past lunch time and I was starved and needed something quick so I ducked into Fredie's after my nearby haircut. In the past, I've been less than impressed with their fish and chips but again I was hungry and wanted to give some else on menu a chance. I was eyeing the seafood sampler for the clams and scallops but I was told that they were out of clams. So I got the scallops and chips with a single piece of fish on the side. This was over $20 after tax. As always, the owner and waitstaff were efficient and super friendly. I had my order and was promptly on my way. I dug into the scallops right away and on first bite I knew I was in for disappointment. The were on the small side and rubbery. I didn't like the breading on the scallops; it didn't taste like anything and had a gritty, sandy texture. Not what you want on a scallop at all. I was hoping for comfort in the fries but like the scallops they were plain and there was even a weird soapy aftertaste. The fish was probably the best part of the meal. The haddock was fresh-tasting even if the batter was skimpy and didn't cover the fish. The owner and staff are super friendly, I really wish I could have reported a better experience since my last visit but after trying pretty much all seafood on the menu and finding it sub par I can't see any reason to go back. Five Starfish out of Five! Fredies Fantastic Fishhouse isn't just a fun, clever name. They do have the best Fish and Chips in the Halifax area and beyond. I say beyond because twenty minutes or so outside of Halifax, in a beautiful area called St. Margaret's Bay, is where their second location is. And that location is definitely just as good. The staff are great no matter what location you are at! They are kind, as fast as can be and definitely deserve big tips. So don't skip on the tip or Karma will find you. Is that how Karma works? Probably not. Either way, tip big and smile back because these people work hard. You can easily mess up Fish and chips in my mind. If you let the batter bake too long causing it to be hard to bite into is just one of the ways. Many places skimp on the fish and put more batter than fish in there meals. Not at Fredies Fantastic Fishhouse. They don't skimp on anything. And if you don't get full from the portions they give you, you seriously have a problem because I can't get through any of their meals. And I have a never ending appetite. I'm really happy a place like Fredies exists. Its almost impossible to find a place that uses batter to put quality into their food as well.
